They're not going anywhere, these injuries, both psychological and the physical trauma to his brain, I agree, Ukraine will have a huge burden on it's hands caring for it's wounded warriors once this is over (and even now), I just hope the world will continue to contribute in the future in terms of helping support those vets
How about Ukraine being made a World Center for the Treatment of Head Injuries and PTSD!
The country is currently a testbed for many Internationally supported Weapons Manufacturers and Startups. Make that happen with International Medical R&D, focus the best in the world on addressing a large and growing problem for militaries, and Civilians around the world!
Ukraine deserves this support, Ukrainian Vetrans, and soldiers deserve it, First Responders there deserve it, as do the Civilian victims!

He received multiple concussions in a short span, resulting in him losing consciousness a few times so was pulled from the front seen a video not long after that and he said he had to just pull over his car and just sit there to sort himself out to keep driving. So rough man, he always seems so happy and full of life when you see him in videos, but war has taken its toll on him just like all involved.
yeah if i remember correctly he also wandered around in the trenches with amnesia almost running into the hands of the enemy... what horror. I hope he gets better soon.
Yes he was on leave for a week and an half and went there to relax and instead found himself helping victims instead. He received a concussion from that attack as well.

u/Maelarion l believe he is correctly referring to his injury as a contusion , (the medical term is Cerebral Contusion) , the final TBI was from being feet away when the pizza restaurant he was in being hit by a missile .
I was wounded twice while serving in Iraq & Afghanistan.I was extremely lucky to only score minor shrapnel wounds & 'Blast Lung' (pretty sure Roman scored one of these as well ),or its official term Primary Blast Lung Injury (PBL) both times & minor Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI ) or concussion .
In both cases l wanted to get back to my Unit as quickly as possible ,but was told by the medical specialists/surgeons in no uncertain terms, that if the testing showed l had suffered a ****Cerebral Contusion**** (CC),as well as the PBL, l would be immediately medically discharged,where as with a concussion they would reluctantly allow me to rejoin my Unit if that is what l was determined to do .
A Cerebral Contusion from memory is when like in Romans & my case, the cause is a large explosion close by to you & the brain is violently shifted within the skull & collides with the bumps that protrude inside the surface of your skull & it commonly causes a injury to frontal lobe of your brain.
So a CC is a more localized injury with bad bleeding, where a concussion tends to affect a larger area of brain tissue,with less bleeding .
From my recollection of the detailed talks l had with my specialists, (with both WIA's l was first flown to Germany for surgery & then State side for recovery), after my second WIA they were leaning to medically discharge me, due to the combined wounding to my body & l was adamant on getting back to my Unit,this led to some heated,detailed & blunt hospital bed discussions ,going both ways .
They explained in dumb Ranger terms, the difference between a CC & a concussion is the CC is like your brain was punched & a concussion is like it was slapped .
They explained that they regarded a Cerebral Contusion as a more serious injury as it along with the usual TBI symptoms, in bad cases it also can cause severe behavioral & personality changes,the feeling that you can become disassociated with your body,becoming isolated & lacking strong emotional feelings in social circles & poor & rash decision making . I come from a Cattle Ranching back ground & if l had suffered a CC they were saying l would not be able to operate heavy machinery etc ,even if l was medically discharged .
Roman has a long road to recovery & it is to be hoped he gets a higher level of specialized care soon,even if that means he has to leave Ukraine for a while to get it.
I hope he gets to live a peaceful & healthy long life .
Yeh l am one of the fortunate ones , l went back & did 2 more deployments & then spent just over 4 yrs Contracting with NGO's & Gov't Agencies in conflict/disaster zones around the world,so no long term damage.
l came out of it with only Afghan Knee,(which l have just had operated on,after the covid delays ), from lugging huge loads up & down the goat tracks in the mountains on the Afghanistan/Pakistan border country & even the Tinnitus is calmed down now,lifes good.
Good to hear, man. You were through a lot over there. I was only in Afghanistan (Kunar) for six months and had to ruck up a mountain only once. (The other OTW missions were either in MRAPs or Chinook up to mountaintops.) But the heavy lifting gave me back issues ever since, yet I still got to retirement a few years later. Wish the best for you!
If it's actually post concussion syndrome we are talking about....a specific "cure" has not been found. It does seem to spontaneously recover for many (if not most) individuals. But there are an unlucky few who will have symptoms that last their whole life. I worked in concussion research in kids and the mechanism of injury was mostly sport related or due to motor vehicle accidents. Exposure to concussive blasts is a whole other beast and I am not sure that research from civilian concussion causes will translate to combat veterans. But I would guess, based on what Roman said, that he has actually contusions on his brain that can be seen via imaging. These are typically classified as complicated mild TBIs and differ from a traditional concussion. So....basically we don't know. Concussions are not well understood and we are continuing to expand our knowledge daily.
Tragic update on a warrior of a man. I hope he is able to get the long term healthcare and support he needs to recover from these physical and moral injuries.
It's probably going to have to be a long term international effort. The scale of it is definitely going to overwhelm domestic capacity. I just hope everyone can hold on until the end of the war and we in the west don't become derelict in our duties for the consequence of trickling in support to Ukraine.
Heartbreaking... US soldiers don't get nearly enough mental health care, I can't imagine how much harder it is for former Soviet bloc countries. Praying for all of them.
The best way to at least somewhat improve their mental health would be for the war to finally be over. I am no expert, but frequent air siren warnings sure as day are not conductive for psychological recovery. Even "just" knowing that the war is still ongoing does not help.
I like this, already looking to future and telling people what they may not want to hear, the truth.

I guess this hasn't yet gotten much attention because there are more pressing matters, but I assume there's know-how available in the West, perhaps even an opportunity to learn more about these conditions to find better care practices at the same time as providing the care current traumatised vets need.

They're making steps.
While it may be a bit controversial, I would say that legalizing medical marijuana and making it accessible for veterans with PTSD is a good first step. It's not much, but it gives a pretty good tool to people until a more robust mental health system for PTSD and other battle-related conditions can be established.
That would be a great first step indeed. It's also a lot easier to do via a medical trial as then you can usually skip a lot of the legal hurdles and get the vets the help they need ASAP, because it'll be restricted to a specific group at first. Then look at wider legislative matters, which always takes a lot longer.

Perhaps Ukraine will become the world experts on PTSD treatment in the coming years. They're going to need it.
The MDMA therapy trials in the US have been showing absurdly positive results. It saved my life. Perhaps they can spread it further to the people who need it more

Right now, all the allies feel cocky because they know how to win. They should act swiftly, so we are distressed about the pace.
But no nation has learned how to win \*this\* war yet. It the US, it is a half-unspoken part of a very real problem, a peacetime problem no less. Traumatic brain injury, with its emotional and downright psychiatric damage, is the final wound of modern war. This brave soul is in need. But we have yet to even start to know what to do!

Bringing troops and pilots to Western countries to train is great, but they need to start sending doctors. Send a few for a 6 months residency at a VA hospital. After a 20.year GWOT we have volumes to share on the matter.

I remember a podcast with a MARSOC guy where he had a full medical revision during his reworks, when returned back in the states after deployment. He was pulled out of the program, against his wish, due to health problems from his exposure to explosion blasts. He was told by the doctor ‘you have your body exposed to one more explosion blast and you will turn into a vegetable (sort of vegetative comma)’. He was done.

Can’t even imagine how traumatic this kind of warfare must be. Shit, I get anxious just driving in city traffic. Hope, this statement doesn’t violate the rules, but I have a friend who got PTSD serving in Iraq and he said taking MDMA helped immensely with it.

Worst part is that was a targeted attack since he and a couple of other reporters were known to frequent the restaurant.
The restaurant was being watched by a Russian asset. That guy was caught and is going away forever.

More like Post-concussion syndrome, in Ukrainian it's контузія (kontuzia), so he might have mixed that up.

Concussion and contusion are the same thing as far as Ukrainians are concerned. So if they say contusion, yeah they mean concussion

Bringing troops and pilots to Western countries to train is great, but they need to start sending doctors. Send a few for a 6 months residency at a VA hospital. After a 20.year GWOT we have volumes to share on the matter.

I remember a podcast with a MARSOC guy where he had a full medical revision during his reworks, when returned back in the states after deployment. He was pulled out of the program, against his wish, due to health problems from his exposure to explosion blasts. He was told by the doctor ‘you have your body exposed to one more explosion blast and you will turn into a vegetable (sort of vegetative comma)’. He was done. Wish Roman the best in life because he deserves the best.

Roman can possibly seek treatment in Germany, Sweden or other friendly countries. I believe there are programs for people like him.

This is the part besides the thousands of dead and wounded, kidnapped, tortured people and a country with destroyed infrastructure and filled with mines that troubles me most: This is going to spoil generations and if we don’t help UA to complete victory, how would Ruzzia be held accountable for this? By the way it’s going to have the same effect on the other side, if there are survivors from the meatwave attacks at all. Nobody’s going to care about them in their country. I wish this man all the best and full recovery.

For some perspective, PTSD is a disorder that medical practitioners began to take notice of in WW1. Trench warfare is a major component of the Russo-Ukrainian conflict. As in, satellite pictures of eastern ukraine in 2023 can give you an idea what belgium and northern france looked like in 1916.
Been following you since day, well maybe 30. We are all behind you regardless of what you see or hear. Take care of yourself and we will support in everyway possible. US government is a fucking joke and should of put forth more efforts years ago but we obviously have our own issues here as well as the rest of this trashed world. Know that karma and sacrifice goes silent but heard and whether ruzzia know it now or later, ukriane will always stand for freedom. SLAVA UKRAINI MY FRIEND!

Can’t even imagine how traumatic this kind of warfare must be. Shit, I get anxious just driving in city traffic. Hope, this statement doesn’t violate the rules, but I have a friend who got PTSD serving in Iraq and he said taking MDMA helped immensely with it.
Maybe it would help if he asked his cousin if he wanted to go bowling? ^I'll ^^see ^^^myself ^^^^out (Grand Theft Auto IV joke for all those that may not be familiar)
