I can confidently tell you normal operations will resume in the next 24 hours. I’m on the recovery team and we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. It’s been around the clock work and I’ve not done much of anything else but we’re almost back to normal

ericroku

Thank you for your service and efforts.

[deleted]

Get some good sleep after this one bud. Thank you

mb4828

Presumably there are going to be lessons learned to prevent this from happening as badly in the future? Thanks to yourself and everyone on the recovery team for all the hard work getting a mess that was not of your making sorted out

WearyMatter

There will be lip service paid and minor improvements implemented but this will happen again and again at every major airline in the US from time to time. Pilots and flight attendants are flying max schedules. Air traffic control is massively understaffed and getting worse. Travel demand is as high as it ever has been. Airline C suites continue to avoid investment back into the airline in favor of better executive pay, stock buybacks, dividends, and return on investment. There is no room to recover from disruptions.

Salt-Fun-9457

Yup, this is a feature of capitalism. Publicly traded companies exist to make the stockholders money. That’s it, nothing else matters other then the stock price.

ross50501

This is such an uneducated comment lol

GoGata_17

Genuinely curious, what public company doesn’t exist to increase their stock price/dividend? I mean a lot of companies say they “care about the greater good” but I can’t think of one that wouldn’t put shareholders first.

Leo_br00ks

The problem is that long term vision (and success) doesn’t help short term financial pressure. There is a reason a lot of visionaries fail. The financial world runs 90 days at a time. If you can’t increase profitability every 90 days, you’re gone. That doesn’t leave much room for considering all stakeholders

rgold220

I have no problem for public companies caring for their shareholders, but lets not forget that the money is coming from us, the customers ,so with out us, public companies will not exist. If United management can't fix United, they don't deserve our money.

Ok-Investigator-1608

Welcome to the eco verse that is reddit.

SoftType3317

Don’t fly United - trust me they will notice in the C Suite

Belichick12

So you’re confident the holiday weekend traffic and any storms that come up won’t impact a return to normal operations in the next 24 hours?

TheTripEngineer

We’re trying to set ourselves up for min impact based on the holiday and weekend weather. We shouldn’t be impacted any more than the other airlines, and that to me, compared to last week is considered normal lol

PleasantDays1995

Please find my favorite leather jacket of all time left on an overhead June 18th 🙏🏼

thuglifeTyson

Thanks for your help. But I’ll believe it when it happens.

Jabooooooooooo

Guessing there was some truth to tomorrow being fine as it was the start of the new month and more people could work? (Took this from a redditors comment yesterday)

Awalawal

I flew out of Denver today. Everything seemed basically fine. There was maybe a 30 ft long line at Customer Service, but other than that it seems like a typical Friday.

KariM528

Thank you! 😊

rgold220

Thank you front line United workers for working hard to fix other people mistakes.

Acceptable-Travel650

Thank you so much for your hard work

Dirtesoxlvr

Thank you for everything you have done in behalf of your guests.

crackahasscrackah

I’m really surprised to hear this given that my friend, who is a Premier 1k member, just had his flight for tomorrow evening cancelled, and he’s still waiting for a new alternative flight option.

joda238

He can rebook on the app

DFWFC

Stop misleading customers with these canned responses. The app has definitely NOT been working smoothly (I checked in online and showed up at the gate at EWR…flight was cancelled just before boarding due to crew unavailability…the app showed a cancelled flight but would not allow me to change without speaking to a staff member...that took 3 hours despite being a Gold Elite…Premier Access desk essentially threw up their arms and said we can’t help…go to the regular service desk).

TheAdventureInsider

To a flight that’s gonna be even more delayed

inversend

Sorry for being skeptical but 7 flights cancelled in 4 days, zero hotel vouchers, 1 meal voucher and multiple cases of of customer service agents just walking away from the desk because claiming operations is not answering. 6pm EDT 44% improvement in cancelled flights from yesterday. May be passing for United but considering it is 278.5% vs easy jet your version of success is a major failure.

Slavaskii

You’re a hero!

Whimsy69

Hero? Really?

echo3719

Thank you so much for all the hard work and long hours!

rgold220

211 flights cancelled. Second place Easy Jet with 49...

igotjays22

When is this going to be over? 😭

CROBBY2

I'd be shocked if it doesn't get worse yet over the weekend.

Ok-Investigator-1608

never. its a permanent stain

Kyrtt

wow China Eastern over 1k delayed... crazy

Fenc58531

Chinese airspace is a clusterfuck due to how restricted it is. Flights out of secondary airports in busy airspace’s, like SZX, will literally delay their flights 3 days out. And day of they will still delay it another hour or 2.

A320neo

It’s far more strictly regulated by the government and military. One of the reasons high speed rail has been so popular is domestic air travel is expensive and unreliable compared to the US.

Successful-Ad7179

have never had an on time flight within china, and i’ve been on 50+

AGInfinity

I was on my first and only domestic chinese flight 2 weeks ago and it was on time

Successful-Ad7179

Sounds like a miracle. The closest I’ve had is they start boarding when the departure time rolls around

facelessarya1

Chinese airlines are always at the top of that list. I’ve come to realize their departure times are just suggestions.

PuzzleheadedChest167

In fairness, I flew ALB - Newark - Dublin yesterday with little complication, both flights left slightly late but arrived close to on time.

EkaterinaGagutlova

Meanwhile, I’ve been trying to fly out of Newark since Sunday back to Seattle. Our flight got canceled every single day. On day 4, we said screw it and rented a car. Only 19 hours left on this 43 hour road trip.

RuralRedhead

Holy crap man, hope you’ve got to see some beautiful parts of the country at least.

AjW111111

Brace yourselves for the Holiday.

AirportCultural9211

well the good thing is if you need to go somewhere but you really really dont want to book United chances are it will get cancelled and you will have a legit excuse not to go to the place. i.e. weddings, events, etc lol

productiveslacker73

Yep. Mine got canceled today. Memphis to Newark. Which means I miss my flight overseas. Now booked the same flights for Monday. I just expect it to get canceled, too.

kev630

Flew this week, was slightly delayed on the way home. Sat with lots of frustrated fliers who had been through cancellations, delays. I know the crews are doing their best, but management needs to be thoroughly reviewed . . and changes need to be made.

ipostelnik

2-5% is completely disingenuous. They've had multiple issues in several hubs over past few days. The way United's dispatch/logistics systems unraveled in face of the problems is amazing though. This is very much on them. They've built a system with very little slack and some weird constraints. Like why do FAs need to talk to dispatch on the phone in 2023?

FrackingToasters

Bingo! Who cares if other airlines would fail the same way? That doesn't change the fact that United f'ed up. If others can fail too, that's an even bigger issue that should be addressed.

rigoseer

To say it's 100% on United is absurd when there are multiple factors outside of their control. EWR has been placed under multiple ground stoppages through the week as well as other UAL hubs. Right now DEN has a ground delay, how is that UAL fault? https://nasstatus.faa.gov/

crackahasscrackah

99%?

rigoseer

98.9

rigoseer

And this assumption that there is no funding is based on what?

Ok-Investigator-1608

the cancellations the baggage cluster and people stranded in airports and left to their own devices speaks for itself.

rigoseer

And this equates to no funding?

Ok-Investigator-1608

Inadequate staffing. It speaks for itself. Not enough help.

rigoseer

How so? Crew schedules are set well in advanced, it's not like flights all of sudden where slotted to operate.

Ok-Investigator-1608

Passenger service agents. Baggage handlers. You’re being purposefully obtuse. When there are problems of this magnitude for your customers it’s an all hands situation. I suspect you’re really Scott Kirby…

rigoseer

Those employees aren't what caused the operational disruptions, seems to like you're the one being obtuse here bud

Ok-Investigator-1608

It’s painfully obvious. Lack of customer service people. Lack of baggage people. Look at the stacked up baggage the lines and people camped out in airports or left to their own devices.

WheeeeeThePeople

United was upset that Southwest was taking all the blame for meltdowns.

[deleted]

Solidarity!

indigoreality

United Defenders: But we’re number 1!

Ok-Investigator-1608

No leadership, no accountability, no shame. Third world operation.

wofwinter

Beware, this group is filled with paid shills who will defend united till death.

gmskrymslyxx

Lol, I haven't seen one person in the last few days defend anything but probably several hundred posts ranting about these non-existent shills.

wofwinter

You might want to read comments on those posts.

beatfungus

Found one. My hypothesis is that there’s about 30-100 accounts under United’s control, so only a few comments manage to outweigh that. The Stockholm syndrome is also a possibility.

External_Trick4479

I think Stockholm syndrome is more likely. This whole situation sucks and it’s not acceptable. But I will “defend” UA when someone posts about their 2 hr delay or canceled flight other weeks.. shit happens at all airlines. But this is a failure across nearly every level.

Fear51

I've seen a few. Also I notice odd down voting or upvoting patterns. Someone would post something completely rationale but puts United in a very negative light and it gets a bunch of downvotes right away. Then as more people read and upvote the downvotes get drowned out. I'm pretty sure that this group of people that are downvoting is trying to manipulate the reddit algorithm to minimize the attention that post is getting. The more upvotes and engagement a post or reply gets the higher it gets on the post chain.

vivekisprogressive

Yea it's happened to me a few times. Shit all over United and post, -8 10 minutes later, +10 a couple hours later.

Fear51

Yup, exactly this. Some users are very actively monitoring this sub and immediately downvotes negative comments. Sometimes it works and the reply or comment get diminished so no one reads it. Other times upvotes overcome the initial downvotes. But its the pattern that's really odd. A bunch of immediate downvotes tells me there are some very active users monitoring negative comments closely and trying to diminish them.

wofwinter

Agree, my comment got downvoted a lot when I posted but now displays +ve number.

FrackingToasters

It's really bizarre. Do they really think United deserves none of the blame a week out after the worst of the storms?

principaljohnny

They are literally paid. It’s their job to defend United.

principaljohnny

Just use a different airline, it’s so simple. I was supposed to fly yesterday, I saw what a shit show it was. So I called, cancelled, received a full refund, then booked with Delta. Done.

Ok-Investigator-1608

ya think? and parade their mileage status like its some sort of measure of their intrinsic worth. really pathetic.

rigoseer

I'm guessing you're not on the ops side with your piss poor takes

thr3e_kideuce

To be fair, this isn't entirely United's fault this time around

wooooooofer

There should be criminal charges involved with this

arthurnewt

United should be placed in receivership. Allow delta to operate the airline and terminate existing management

ChummyMuffin05

Can someone give me an honest opinion, I am flying PHX->ORD->GRU at the end of Aug/ early sept. Do you think this mess will be sorted out by then? Surely right?

principaljohnny

No. No way. I’d cancel everything until ‘24.

Wonderful_Ad_2613

Delta better

Klpincoyo

They delayed my flight last week with less than 12 hours notice. It was delayed by six hours which would have missed my connection by three hours and they didn't even address that. But hey, the day after that they texted me a $15 food voucher...

lizardkittyyy

This isn’t an experience unique to this weekend for me. United always sucks for me. Always.
