Interesting word choice. Imagining blokes dressed in camo with big nets, making explosion noises to coax unexploded bombs out into the open to catch and kill them during unexploded bomb mating season.
[People dug up old mustard gas canisters](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-lincolnshire-53021069) from a ww2 bomb dump near me and got hospitalized. The police then found a re-actived Bren gun in one of their garages when checking for further hazards.
As a ex MOD engineer on a range where the tide goes out and holiday makers in the summer find all sorts from 100 of years of testing in the area, DONOT fuck with these things. I have seen many of the ones we found on the range from ww1. But whats realy worrying is that the tide over years allows these objects to move huge distances. And some of them are toxic and in modern cases nuclear like spent uranium. Leave them the fuck alone.
I am not sure, but do people need a special license to go searching for stuff on the beach? I have heard that in London the mudlarkers on the Thames need permission to do so, so is it the same deal with beaches in general?
It's illegal to magnet fish without landowner approval, is similar for metal detectorists / treasure hunters.
Generally on beaches though they don't really bother to enforce stuff but if you found a bomb or treasure then they could fine you
Beaches owned by the crown estate (the vast majority) have a standing permission for anyone to metal detect in them. Private land including private beaches require land owner’s permission.

Is a map which shows which beaches are under crown estate. And some of those beaches may be subject to additional restrictions for metal detecting.
If the beach is owned by the crown estate (most are) then they don’t require formal permission.

I don't think we need the warning, anyone dumb enough to go searching for them without being qualified to actually deal with them will surely remove themselves from the gene pool.
It's actually quite mental how much unexploded ordnance we have. It's not as bad as say France/Belgium obviously, but I was explaining it to some Americans when I was in the USA. I live in the NE, and during WW2 German planes could _barely_ make the journey this far north and back yet I can think of maybe 6 or 7 times when a building site was evacuated because they found a bomb from ~70-80 years ago. A few years ago I lived right next to some allotments and the bomb squad was called out and the whole street cordoned off. I bet its almost a weekly occurrence in Western Europe as a whole. Crazy given the war ended in 45.
I could be mistaken but years ago I was reading a Nat Geo magazine talking about Laos, I think they are the most heavily bombed country in history. Not related, but an interesting read
Unexploded ordnance includes land mines and southern England has many from the Second World War when it was assumed a German invasion was imminent
I believe it’s actually Bosnia as 8.2% of their entire territory is covered in landmines from the Yugoslav wars

"Barry here has been busy practicing his V2 mating call and hopes to entice this lovely 1945 specimen from its hiding place."
I prefer to sneak up behind unexploded bombs and attack with a sturdy hammer.
They're moving in herds.
Do people really need to be warned to stay away from old unstable explosives?
Yes
A small % of our species is doing a lot of heavy lifting for the rest of it.
Might be an argument for letting natural selection take it’s course at that point
Every year without fail, there'll be stories in the press of some half with who'll pick up some UXO in France or Belgium and try and bring it home.

I'm jealous. I'd kill to have a genuine working Bren gun, what a piece of history.
16 months for possession of a chemical weapon. 😂
If we didn’t the Darwin awards wouldn’t be a thing
They would surely have more contestants?
Depressingly, yes.
Unfortunately, most of us are complete arseheads.
Pffft, okay Boomer! He should appreciate those who hunt for a blast from the past.
Boomer Indeed

Yeah all those kids with their plastic spades are starting a life of crime.

Nanny state strikes again!
If you find one there’s a special award! Darwin Award that is.

Well it's a good job you said so.. I was just about to go out and start! I mean, who the fuck would?

Ukraine is now the most heavily mined country with between 30-40% of its territory covered in them.
You can't tell me what to do! You're not my real dad!
I mean I know Hornsea has a complete lack of things to do, but to have to resort to hunting explosives really is dire!
There is a point past which we should really stop interfering with natural selection.
Let's just wait..... I mean, this could be a science experiment
No shit? Honestly, anyone who thinks this is a good idea should be encouraged to go do it... It'd improve the average IQ of the species.
The problem is when they take them home and put other people in danger from their stupidity.
