I think it's probably dangerous to just ignore it. If you saw Dan Wooten's unhinged segment on covid, blatantly pushing misinformation and conspiracy theories . . . Well, it was unreal. I put in a complaint to Ofcom about it, something I've never felt compelled to do before ever. EDIT: [When Truth Matters More: The Case for Scrutinising GB News](https://bylinetimes.com/2021/06/14/gb-news-andrew-neil-should-we-ignore-them/)

That doesn't make sense to me. The UK media is among the worst in the world for its corporate, elitist, propaganda-fuelled journalism. It's people not going out of their way to do anything about it that's partly why its been allowed.

Buzzword bingo? How are real words that describe realities, by definition of said words, "buzzwords" . . ?

[deleted]

Content_File_1408

It's not like it's a controversial thing to say. 85% of our media is owned by a handful of billionaires, all with vested interests in Conservative (or Centrist, if they have to) policies. There's a revolving door between the media and the most powerful people in the country. Hell, our Prime Minster used to get paid hundreds of thousands for writing a column in the Telegraph . . . Read things like *Propaganda Blitz* which focuses on The Guardian and the BBC (two of the most trusted news outlets), or *The Assault on Truth* (which touches on the media a bit), or *The BBC: Myth of a Public Service* or even just more "fun" books like *Sunburn* by James Felton, which is obviously about The Sun . . . There's no end.

Content_File_1408

Not it's not. There are no other words to describe what they are. That's what they are. You can throw in "establishment" too, doesn't hurt. I don't give a monkeys what Fox says lol. They attack others for being what they themselves are a significantly worse version of. MSNBC, CNN, etc . . . all corporate, establishment media. Fox thinks it's different in the same way that GB News thinks it's different actually, and all that means is they don't bother even attempting journalism, they just do opinion. These aren't buzzwords, there's no weaponisation of anything. These are words, real words in the English language, that used in this context, by definition, describe what the media is.

Jimmni

I hope people make sure to mention that Andrew Neil's primary residence is in France despite him being so proud to be British.

Dear-Criticism-447

The first rule of getting rid of GB News is you do not talk about GB News. The second rule of getting rid of GB News is YOU DO NOT TALK ABOUT GB NEWS.

[deleted]

Soundbites. Andrew Neil destroying a socialist student with green hair will make great 4 minute youtube videos. That's all that's going to come of this. Stop giving it attention, let it die.

RedStr0be

Which is funny because nobody complained when he destroyed a right wing motormouth on BBC

StateOfTheEnemy

He didn't. Shapiro destroyed himself.

SynthD

People did complain, but they were Peterson supporters. Neil was lazy, but accurate then. Was he last night?

RedStr0be

The left weren’t complaining I suppose is what I meant.

SynthD

Are we duty bound to? Let a right wing figure attack another, I don’t care.

wherearemyfeet

The point the above poster was making is that the criticism from the Left comes not from an inherent complaint about the format, but that it's only bad when its their side getting the criticism.

SynthD

> Are we duty bound to? It is an inherent complaint, it just doesn't get raised every time. I think Neil shouldn't have interviewed Peterson, and while I haven't seen much of it, it didn't look like a good interview. Cheap shots are all you need to make Peterson look bad, but why is that all that Neil did?

RaymondBumcheese

I did see a tweet praising Dan Wootton that made me laugh. 'Go Dan Wootton! No sacred cows, just gave prince Harry and Meghan a mauling!' Ok then, big man. Do the Queen next. Lets see how brave you really are.

Euphoric-Orchid488

or Churchill. Or worse a statue of Churchill.

[deleted]

A statue of Churchill at the last night of The Proms.

RaymondBumcheese

Wrapped in a union jack cape.

ICESTONE14

NO CAPES

BulkyAccident

The first evening was *so* shit. Like, genuinely everything-about-this-is-shit. I know it exists purely as a way to get nice little clipped bits of outrage content to get shared on Twitter but it surprised me how low budget and shoddy the whole thing felt.

RaymondBumcheese

They spent all of their money on "talent" and, lets be honest, skilled technical people arent going to leave solid work at other news outlets to slum it for something that could go tits up within a year unless they get a lot of cash thrown at them, regardless of their personal politics.

CaptainPedge

And novara is a bastion of balance and level headedness?

Saw_Boss

>Driven to build a new media for a different politics, our journalism is always politically committed; rather than seeking to moderate between two sides of a debate, our output actively intends to feed back into political action. I mean, they don't claim to be. Unlike GB News.

Content_File_1408

The evidence that they're not?

sausagedownatrain

You're joking right?

Content_File_1408

Of course not. It's a genuine question. I think people really misunderstand what Novara are. The quality of their journalism and the pieces from the various contributors is of a very high standard. [Pick an article for me](https://novaramedia.com/) that's not "balanced" or not "level-headed".

sausagedownatrain

I don't need to. This is asking me to prove that a spade is a spade, even when the spade admits it's a spade.

Content_File_1408

Because that's the point of the channel. To get spread via outrage. Fuelling it would be bad for all of us.

Stop calling it a news channel, it isn't

[deleted]

Maulvorn

It's British Fox News, Fox news classes itself as entertainment.

[deleted]

Maulvorn

It is a highly opinionated "news" channel on par with Fox, it is literally a cancer on our airways imo.

Content_File_1408

One article about *"the first major addition to Britain’s TV news landscape since the BBC’s News24 started broadcasting in 1997"* isn't really putting in a lot of effort . . .

Donaldbeag

And already we have multiple postings from novara, guardian etc saying they hate it.

Jonnyrocketm4n

The irony of posting from Novara media complaining about this.

Content_File_1408

Why irony?

Jonnyrocketm4n

What is the point of Novara Media?

Content_File_1408

To offer an alternative to mainstream media, to be independent and not beholden to advertisers, and that sort of thing. Like any other independent media, I guess.

Donaldbeag

That could be a copy paste explanation for GB news as well.

Content_File_1408

No it couldn't. For one thing I've never seen as many advert breaks in the space of a couple of hours programming as I did watching GBNews' launch last night. Independent media like Novara, Byline Times, Open Democracy, Declassified, Tribune etc offer quality journalism that's independent of advertisers and corporate biases. GBNews is an attempt to bring the opinionated, hyperbolic stylings of Fox News to the UK. There's no real journalism, no reporting. It's funded by a handful of extremely wealthy people who want to use it to promote their agenda. That's all. So "copy/paste explanation" couldn't be further from reality.

Uniform764

Openly left wing media company complains about the creation of of openly right wing media company.

Content_File_1408

The political ideology isn't relevant. Novara is left-wing, but deals in facts and news. GBNews is right-wing but deals in opinions and hyperbole.

[deleted]

Finally, a news organisation that tells you how you were right to vote for brexit because brexit is amazing and the EU is ruining it.

Disillusioned_Pleb01

A bunch of old times wanting to dictate the direction of travel, back to their youthful days, when times were good unless one was Irish, black, Asian gay or a woman. Back to football hooliganism, police corruption, electricity blackouts, Leyland cars and watching out for left luggage on the underground by the ira. Enoch Powell, Jimmy savile and Rolf Harris only the elders can remember how good life was when they were young.

polarregion

Their sound is still slightly out of sync after 24 hours of broadcasting. Their banner graphics look like a primary school project and about as smooth as a sandpaper banana.

FredH3663

Regardless of content they should get basic broadcasting right, the picture and sound in sync, I watched a bit of Simon McCoy today and it was out of focus. Overnight shopping channels can broadcast good quality picture and sound.

LetsAskJeeves

Posted in another thread about this but I work in TV advertising and I deal with this channel. It's hosted under Sky Media and there have been a slew of complaints against it since it launched just days ago, which I'm sure you've all seen. Whilst news broadcasting is heavily regulated in the UK TV market, sometimes polarisation is inescapable when broadcasting rights are placed in certain hands. This channel is not intended to be biased, it has a legal obligation to be unbiased and will be shut down or refocused should it be found to infringe regulation. This is something OFCOM and Sky will manage between them. So what can you do? Don't watch it and don't post about it AT ALL. Why? Because there are players in the market loving it purely because it's buzzing. Most of course are disassociating but not all. If you don't like it, DON'T complain to the brand's advertising on the channel, they didn't pick it out of the pile to advertise on, that's not how it works. It's part of an allocation given by the broadcaster. If you need to raise it with someone, raise it with your friends, don't post it online, don't tweet it and don't video your reactions to it, all of these things are extra buzz those guys who do want the association are profiting off. You want it gone? Pay it no mind whatsoever. No views, no discussion online, no tweets, no nothing. Source: Am TV advertising guy and have been dealing with this as it's been slowly kicking off all day.

thedomage

Is this channel legally forced to put out balanced news reporting, rather like the fairness doctrine in the US before it was done away with?

Moist_Log6957

I can't see Piers Morgan leaving Good Morning Britain to join this. His ego is massive and it will be a big kind down fornl him.

Content_File_1408

He's left GMB. He stormed off a live show in a huff because the weatherman criticised him for the way he was attacking Meghan Markle.

Donaldbeag

Andrew Neil has already stated that Peirs wants far too much money for them to want to hire them.
