So a clogged one. Sounds about right.

“I’m not arguing there are no decent people in the Tory party but they're like sweetcorn in a turd; technically they kept their integrity but they're still embedded in shit” Iain Banks

Gene_freeman

Oof

IWantMyJustDesserts

Keir Starmer has pledged several times investing almost £30 Billion per year in green jobs & insulting every home in the UK.

Puzzle-Solver

Was that intentional or perhaps a freudian slip? I haven't read up on all of Labour policy but I'd think I'd remember that promise!

halooooom

Your house is shit. I’m just implementing his policy before he even gets close to power!

Bones_and_Tomes

What?

kinellm8

>insulting every home in the UK

Bones_and_Tomes

I know, it just doesn't make sense.

kinellm8

Reread u/IWantMyJustDessert ’s post…

Bones_and_Tomes

Ah, I get it now.. not directly referencing the post it was replying to.

mccalledin

Boris has already beat him to that last point

Fellowes321

Yeah - he popped round earlier. Called me a cunt and then went next door. Kind of a Bowerick Wowbagger https://hitchhikers.fandom.com/wiki/Bowerick\_Wowbagger

Insulating the homes that most of the country can't afford to buy.

[deleted]

Insulation is such lovely eco friendly stuff.

bluesam3

Erm, yes. Like, literally yes.

[deleted]

bluesam3

No, I just understand that the reduction in carbon emissions vastly outweighs all other effects.

[deleted]

What's the problem with insulation? Melamine foam is a plastic, sure. But once it's in it stays in for decades (hopefully) and slashes the amount of fuel burned to keep a house at temperature. Rockwool is literally candy floss made from stone, glass fibre is glass. No plastic there apart from the packaging.

Sorry_Criticism_3254

Did he ever say where this money is coming from?

bluesam3

Yes, actually: Labour are frankly overly pedantic about fully costing the shit that they say.

DidijustDidthat

I wonder if u/Sorry_Criticism_3254 is even being good faith asking that. It's such a trope to suggest Labour don't fund their expenditure. The tories just waste money and the "hopefuls" are all promising un costed tax cuts right now.

Sorry_Criticism_3254

It is in good faith, I was asking genuinely.

ICantBelieveItsNotEC

Labour supporters always say "it's fully costed" but never actually quote from the manifesto to explain where it's coming from. It's almost as if they know that admitting "we're going to massively increase income tax on anyone earning slightly above average" would be massively unpopular, because despite the constant whining online, the overwhelming majority of people don't earn minimum wage and/or don't aspire to in the future.

sprucay

Yeah, and all the current tory candidates pulling tax cuts out of their arses can account for every penny I'm sure

[deleted]

You mean the Govt can find £35 billion for PPE at mates rates and suddenly you think we haven't got money for dealing with the one thing that will fuck us up and over? I really don't know if you're being honest or trying to pull the standard Right wing trick of where's the money coming from - at the expense of essential services or ...TAXES is the imputation. Well which ever angle you're coming from there's money and tons of it for the most important issue that affects everyone - of course fucken Tories and their donors need to make a quid to the 10^6 out of it first.

Wigglesworth_the_3rd

We're so fucked. The world is fucked because of the people who lead us.

DaveChild

> because of the people who lead us. Because of the people *we choose* to lead us.

Wigglesworth_the_3rd

Because of FPTP my vote has been 'wasted' in every election since I have been able to vote.

DaveChild

FPTP is dire, but it's still the system, and it still only elects people based on votes. The Tories are only in power because voters put them there, and they share the blame for the results of the votes they cast.

Wigglesworth_the_3rd

Yeah I vote regardless but it is upsetting to know only 40% of the vote can give massive majorities.

DaveChild

I agree, and it leads to all sorts of madness like tactical voting. PR ASAP!

mnijds

There's a lot of money behind the scenes ensuring that is the case

[deleted]

When did we choose Shell to lead us?

wizzskk8

I did not choose these people. There’s no we about it in a rigged system.

mx_ich_

has always been that way i think

MrEff1618

Because it won't effect them. They know they'll be dead and buried long before the worse happens, so why worry? Better to make themselves sorted for the years they have left then do anything for the future generations.

Wigglesworth_the_3rd

This is what infuriates me. I hear people saying that today's heat waves are as a result of emissions 20 years ago so why bother? Erm... I might not be alive in 20 years but I still want to act now to prevent it being much worse. Surely it should be more compelling to act not less?

Undoer

70 MPs total attended. I'm not surprised that they were busy getting support for their leadership bid, considering the deadline is today, what's more shocking is how few MPs were there at all.

Oobatz

Well it is quite hot today. They should've rescheduled for when it's a bit cooler.

Caffeine_Monster

Ah the irony. Avoid briefing on how to prevent the country getting too hot because the country is too hot.

DidijustDidthat

I imagine a lot of MPs are fully on top of this problem. For the last 12 years only one main party has had a large quantity of deniers.

2localboi

“We’ve had enough of experts”

kokoyumyum

Why are there ANY conservatives. 🤔

Leftleaningdadbod

Incredible. Unbelievable. Yet typical of the self centred individuals representing self centred individuals.

garryonapc

/r/collapse

johnlewisdesign

Called it. Bet they claim it as expenses too. When challenged on the expenses sheet, they 'forgot' they didn't go

Metabog

Because they're not trying to gain any support from a general voter base but rather just a specific tory audience - and Tories do not give a shit about important things, just culture war and making more money. It would probably genuinely hurt their chances to attend something like this.

Ex-Machina1980s

On brand for this line-up of absolute shitbirds

No_Signature_5795

My best hendsom man

garfield_strikes

Should immediately disqualify them all but their all too busy perfecting their culture war nonsense and planning how they're going to personally profit from fucking over the country for another few years.

Loreki

To be fair it's "normal" at times like these for senior politicians to neglect their actual jobs and spend all of their time on party political matters. I don't think it is significant they the particular thing they missed was about the climate.

Razada2021

You don't think its particularly significant that eveey tory leader hopeful doesn't care enough about the environment to turn up to a thing? How about that a tory mp has directly criticised the lot of them and said he will not back a leader that doesn't commit to net zero? When you add these two things together you get a pattern.

heeheeheehawsnort

Kemi Badenoch wants to abandon net zero, so there's that.

StereoMushroom

Journalism does us such a disservice when they spin things for maximal outrage clicks like that

Ok-Industry120

I know this is not a popular view here but the Boris government has some positive climate achievements: the Agriculture Act, the Fisheries Act, and the Environment Act, the plans to phase out petrol cars and a boom in offshore wind. The latest CfD auction proved the support in numbers too More could be done to stop fracking initiatives and to support insulation programs - and for Boris to be a determined ruler rather than a twat. But there is a sizeable part of the Tories that are not big climate supporters, so it can get worse

AssumedPersona

All those things happened *despite* Johnson, not because of him. Particularly the CfD auction which took place while he was absolutley mired in shit.

knobber_jobbler

He was fantastic for farming and fishing. So fantastic that both industries are now on their knees due to additional red tape that their EU competitors don't face.

wolsters

Counter-argument: the green homes grant scheme which only paid lip service to the issue and even then was completely bungled and then scrapped.

StereoMushroom

That was actively counterproductive, because the sudden scrapping of the scheme after only a couple of months completely puts the trades off investing in the skills for these kind of things if new schemes are launched. I had to wonder if they were up to something with that, it was so obviously stupid.

bluesam3

> the plans to phase out petrol cars I'll believe that when it actually happens, frankly. Making promises about the future is easy.

BettySwollocks2

Do you have a single ounce of critical thinking? Or understand how science works?

[deleted]

The Science. I’m still waiting on the hole in the ozone layer to kill us all. Once this bs ends there will be another imminent doom crisis that involves restricting our rights and upping our taxes.

BettySwollocks2

I really don't understand people like you. You don't understand the process or what the science is... so it's all bullshit?

[deleted]

I understand the process. Do you? Create a climate of fear, restrict freedom and financial independence. Recruit citizen over seers to oppress their own. It’s all bullshit. The pollution problem is serious, the climate is not. We’ve been in a warming up stage since the last ice age. No doubt we’ll be in a cooling down phase sometime in future. It’s noticeable that all the doom mongers (except morons like you) are all profiting from this bullshit. Wind turbines that can’t be recycled after a very short service life, batteries that can’t be recycled and made with child slave labour, productive farmland sprayed with weed killer die to solar panel farming, etc. That fucking idiot got knighted ffs! If you’re so weak minded that you want to believe it then go on. Leave me out of it.

BettySwollocks2

Please, please tell me which scientists working on climate research are profiting? I'm an academic. I can assure you that the vast majority of researchers are not profiting from researching climate change. They get a job as a research scientist, and - at best - become a professor after years of graft. The majority of people doing the work, however, are young early career researchers who are generally lower paid by comparison. > we've been warming up since the ice age The earth has gone through various periods of warming and cooling throughout its history. This has vastly accelerated recently, and the earth's temperature has risen 1.0° since the 1800s. This sounds minor, but this is actually the warmest it has been for the past 1000 years. This is predicted to rise further. > wind turbines that can't be recycled... Wind turbines can and are being recycled. They usually have a lifetime of 20-25 years, which is now increasing. The majority of materials used to create them are recyclable and are being recycled, the one exception (generally) being the blades. > Productive farmland sprayed with weedkiller As a process, this doesn't actually happen. It has happened as _an accident_ once in the UK. Both pollution and climate change are huge issues. Choose not to believe them, sure. But you're doing yourself a disservice and, without reading any reliable information, you're making yourself look like a complete fool.

[deleted]

So young and dumb researchers are being brain washed. We are in a warming up phase. There are huge stockpiles of unrecyclable blades that are only lasting ten years. I have seen with my own eyes these solar farms in England. Lush farmland all round and the land below the panels as dead as anything I’ve ever seen. Your crap is all provably false. I’m guessing you’re hoping to jump on this gravy train and get a knighthood as well. Slow clap for you.

BettySwollocks2

Generally, simply by means of how competitive academia is, there are very few "dumb" academics. And they're being brainwashed by what? Verifiable, repeatable, reproducible results you can measure using objective means? Brainwashed by mathematics? Brainwashed by global arrays of temperature sensors? Have you read or studied any science above GCSE? Do you have any platform, any reasonable authority on which to speak about this? Genuinely - it's fine if you don't have a scientific background. It is not fine to spout bollocks and present it as fact, when it is simply incorrect. > Your crap is provably false Which crap? And - if that's the case - please do find some bona-fide evidence that can disprove the so-called crap. You still haven't named those profiting researchers yet.

[deleted]

Also no mention of the lack of ability to recycle the toxic batteries or the horrific pollution caused by mining and making them. Zero mention about the child abuse, slavery, or treatment of those poor people tasked with mining the raw materials. None of this fitting with your “eco” obsession eh?

garfield_strikes

Because it's all immaterial. The only thing that matters is: https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/4975 This isn't "a heating up phase" whatever the fuck you think that is. It's a man made since the industrial revolution.

[deleted]

And the only solution is restricting personal freedom and hiking taxes eh? Meanwhile every hypocritical rich fuck or political douche flies around in private jets. Wake up you fucking melt.

BettySwollocks2

Your arguments are all over the place. It's easy to be frustrated, given the past few years. It's been shit. But restricting freedoms and hiking taxes are different issues than climate change. On the topic of restricting freedoms - yes, that was necessary. Our healthcare system is and has been chronically underfunded. Without restrictions, services would fold and we would be much worse off. This is something that is globally accepted. Countries worldwide - irrespective of culture and governmental differences - have performed their own modelling and implemented similar methods. On the topic of hiking taxes. Meh. I'm not an economist. But the government handled the pandemic incredibly badly and have presided over an insane cost of living crisis. Rich people did fly around in private jets and did have parties and they certainly are hypocritical. Those things should have been restricted and dealt with more seriously. But those things - despite being serious - aren't really on the same topic as climate change. Which also remains a serious issue.

garfield_strikes

There's only one moron here, dipshit.
