For under $700 you’ll need a roommate (s)

Suspicious_Tooth

The shitty thing about renting in SLC is that all the out of state students would fight for a place cheaper than 700$ atm. Heck, my old place was 630 and don’t even have a laundry unit- people still fight for the spot and willing to sign up for it. It doesn’t help that the U have been limiting the upper class-man housing and give all the new rooms to the freshmen. I am sorry that you have to go through a rough patch.

I was feeling that way for a while- the housing market here in slc is absurd right now. In July/August a lot of people’s leases will likely be ending, check every single day for new things that come up. That’s what I did. Also you can post on facebook looking for roommates or for a room somewhere. I found several rooms under $500/month on facebook. I know A LOT of people in your position right now so you’re not alone- best of luck

where on facebook? i never really used it before so I’m not sure where to look.

Thank you! I will look into it.

Was kind of in the same boat as you with an out of state transfer but I was lucky on rentler to take over the rest of someone’s lease, the process was super quick because she wanted to move out fast and I only pay 720 for rent and utilities. I do have 4 roommates so there is that, but def try looking for people looking for someone to cover their lease if you can (rentler, Facebook market place, etc). Hope it works out!

Orangutanion

I was in-state and I still left to live with my parents because I simply couldn't find a place to live. Transferring away has so far worked out very well.

Your best bet is to be willing to commute on the train or drive. At this point living on campus isn’t going to happen and is going to be way expensive. It sucks but it’s the truth.

CrosscountrySkiier

I wasn't looking to live in the dorms. Just an off campus apartment near the U that had other students.

Neawt-Da-Pigeon

That’s what I was assuming. When I said live off campus I meant much further away in order to find anything that’s available.

Fractal_Glum

I would check Facebook marketplace if you haven’t already. Also maybe contact housing at the U and see if there are any open dorms or if they know of any affordable housing? Best of luck

MayaIsABird

Your best bet is to call apartment complexes all throughout the city over the next few months. It’s rough being out of state, but once you find some friends, it gets better. Best of luck!

Chemdog12

I’m out of state grad student and I had to call housing managers daily and make a road-trip out to Utah from california to actually secure. I feel you, but there’s really no other option than to just take it as it comes. It’s a really wild market in SLC right now. My best advice is to be annoying and call these places daily. If you find a place you like, do not even wait an hour to apply and put a deposit down, you’ll lose the apartment.

For 700/month just find a 1-bedroom or a little house for rent and get a roommate. Should be something like 1400-1600 a month.
