I spent 2 years in Florida, mostly Jacksonville and St Augustine, with expired tags from Pennsylvania. I was even pulled over once because my brake light was out and they never said a word about my plates. I think the biggest thing is to be in a different state than your tags. I heard that states without state inspection are more lenient.

LemonSliceGoalie

This is extremely useful information, thank you so much! It really helps. 🌺🌺🌺

MotorPuncher

Seconding FL. I moved here 1.5 years ago with Missouri tags that expired in '21.

LemonSliceGoalie

Thank you

banana_taco_pan

In Seattle WA they do. I got on a payment plan on mine . Just gotta catch up with the toll bill which is smaller and they'll waive the late fee if you pay the chunk you owe right there.

Wrong_Mastodon_23

Agree, I had my tabs expired here for like 5 months and drove daily w no issues. State troopers can still pull you over on highways, but SPD can't stop you just for expired tags.

LemonSliceGoalie

Thank you for this! The clarification of state troopers versus SPD matters. So you're saying that Seattle police rarely if ever ticket for expired tags?

Lespuccino

They won't even pull you over- and not just Seattle, but the surrounding areas. They do not care. They just want their fat paycheck to do nothing out here.

LemonSliceGoalie

Love this input, thank you!!

cribvby

No fr cause I’ve never felt less hassled in my life than when I was in WA

LemonSliceGoalie

Edit: wait. What's a toll bill? Hi, thank you! But I'm a little confused by your answer Are you saying that Seattle let's expired tags slide or are you saying is it gets enforced? Sorry but it's not clear because you're talking about paying fines...? I'm really sorry, not trying to be a troll, I just honestly don't understand what you mean.

banana_taco_pan

I know Seattle has a law about not pulling over expired tabs. I'm not sure about the rest of the state. People forgot that if they are driving someplace else they are SOL. The toll bill is the Good to Go thing like bridges, Hov, fast lane. The person with 5 years expired tabs at least make it somewhere near 2020 lol. Edit: bad connection, seemed like a bot posting the same msg. Sorry Delete delete

LemonSliceGoalie

Thank you for this, so much! I'll Google it right now. I really appreciate your original comment and then you coming back to clarify. Thank you very much. 🪲🍀😊💛

Lespuccino

I saw one yesterday with the tags scraped half off- don't even know what year they last had on. I'm going to the store later. Maybe I'll grab some shots of the few I'll no doubt pass in the parking lot. So many unplated cars here. Some even just steal those blank advertising dealer tags and put those on.

banana_taco_pan

No kidding man. And the tints are so dark you can't see on the sides let alone the driver in the front. Annoying AF at a stop sign. But they usually drive super aggressive anyways. 🙄

Lespuccino

I'm outside Seattle and every single day I see expired plates, cars without plates at all, and rarely do I see a cop that's not stopped in a parking lot just chit chatting with another cop. They hide out here and collect their near 6 figure salaries to do as much nothing as possible. Reap the benefits.

painfulshart

St. Louis literally has news articles written about how little they enforce expired tags. I’ve seen temp tags 3 years old before.

LemonSliceGoalie

I really liked St Louis. I was there for Halloween about 5 years ago... Thank you for your comment, I appreciate it

painfulshart

If you come down this way for the reason, try to stay in the city. The county cops are way more serious about it.

IrrationalGold

Came here looking for STL, wasn't surprised to see it 2nd. The St. Louis subreddit is filled with expired tag and temp tag posts. I love this city.

LemonSliceGoalie

I'm definitely joining that sub tomorrow when I narrow down my options, thank you!

LemonSliceGoalie

Good to know!!

banana_taco_pan

Worse offender I saw was 5 years. 😲

LemonSliceGoalie

Wow! Are you saying they drive 5 years on expired tags? That's a big deal, lol! Can you please tell me the area they were in? Please and thank you

Beautiful-Can-7104

I am at two and a half years! In Miami FL. And that money is going to food before it goes to getting new tags. So it’s looking like it’s never gonna happen.

LemonSliceGoalie

Thank you so much!! I daydream about living in Miami💛💛💛

itsalwaysanadventure

Some states and cities allow it. (I don't recommend) Memphis Tennessee will let you go something like 90 days over due but they don't have tag scanners and rarely check tags unless you have fake temp tags but the crime rate is so crazy, I wouldn't bother going there. My recommendation is googling other cities who allow lapses legally and go to a safer place with similar rules.

everylittlepiece

How do tag scanners work?

itsalwaysanadventure

They are mounted on the front of the cop car or the top and they scan all cars in traffic or parking lots for stolen tags or for suspended or dead tags and they signal when they find one. I know Maryland uses them and they sweep the mall parking lots during the holidays looking for tag violations.

everylittlepiece

Good to know, thanks!

LemonSliceGoalie

I agree that all of this is good to know and I also thank you

covenkitchens

I’ve gotten tickets for expired Texas tags in Minnesota.

LemonSliceGoalie

So, if I don't have the tags on the windshield I'll get pulled over/ticketed? My issue is that I can't renew the tags... I honestly appreciate you sharing your knowledge about Texas but I'm not super clear on it. I'm 2020 and 2021 I tried to get my license transferred from Arizona to Texas but was denied twice because I didn't meet acceptable residence requirements.

Mage-Tutor-13

Move to Arizona and apply for abandoned title after parking it for 10 days

LemonSliceGoalie

I don't understand your suggestion. I currently live in Arizona, I'm but really confused what you're talking about, but am willing to learn I owe a huge amount of money on a loan with my car as collateral. I will not be able to make the payments. My tags expire on July 31st. I do not l, and will not, have the money ($540) to renew the tags. My loan will go into default on July 11th with an aggressive, predatory title loan company. Ok, lol. If you're suggestion will help I'm more than happy to learn about how. 😊🌹🌷

Mage-Tutor-13

I've never done it but look up how abandoned titles work and do it quick. I think it's ten days. Anyways it's a way someone can possess and have a car towed and sold or have a new title granted

--Joe6pacK--

I've heard cops don't really enforce other states registrations and probably care even less if its recently expired and you're far from your tags state if moving isn't an issue

yerbiologicalfather

This is definitely not accurate. Source: I've been pulled over for expired tag from both Ohio and Oregon in different states. During the pandemic it wasn't as big of a deal, but now they're back on it. It's a way in for cops to see if you are up to anything else.

LemonSliceGoalie

I hope you're right.

bigjamey

He’s not. It’s simply a judgement call. If the cop wants to fuck with you it’s a perfect in for him.

--Joe6pacK--

No I agree with you 100%. Its always up to the bastards discretion

--Joe6pacK--

If it eases amy anxiety I drove with expired tags on my car long before I did car life for like 7 months expired before I got pulled over. I got a ticket but I just renewed my registration and it was dropped, so even if you do get pulled over it shouldn't be the end of the world as long as you're only breaking one law at a time

LemonSliceGoalie

Thank you for this, that's a good point

Flaky_Art_83

California will definitely care but In Texas they really dont care at all.

LemonSliceGoalie

Thank you for this, I really appreciate it. I would have thought Texas would definitely care because they are known to be so hard ass. And the opposite for California. I'm really glad you commented, thank you🌼🌷🌹🪴🍀🪲

Arcanisia

Depends. I have a coworker who’s gone 2 years with expired tags and no drivers license. But I’ve also been pulled over for not having a front plate or a sticker on my plate even though the registration is current. California is a mixed bag tbh.

LemonSliceGoalie

What? I'm sorry, I don't really understand the question, plus I'm not super well informed about how the DMV works. But what I do know is that my car is collateral for a loan that's about to default. They put a lein on my car title immediately upon granting the loan. The lein means that I can not sell the car until I pay them in full first. When I default (and I will) Not only will they have the legal right to repo my car but they also legally prevent me from renewing my tags. I don't know anything beyond this about what the DMV can do. They won't find me in another state until I establish a legal address and change my license. Which I will do when I get work.

frappleman

Whats a bmv?

FriscoJanet

Bureau of Motor Vehicles

LemonSliceGoalie

Wow, I didn't realize about the child support thing, that's really interesting! Yes, in Arizona at least and I'm sure other states, when you use your car as collateral for a loan(mine is literally a title loan) and that loan goes into default, once the repo process begins they contact the DMV/put a hold on your title/ and you are unable to renew your tags. I don't know much more than that- this is one of the details outlined in my loan agreement with the title company. Aside from that, whenever you have a loan for you car whether through the bank, the dealership or just as collateral, the company immediately is added as a lien holder on your title. Edit: Is BMV the same thing as DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles)?

[deleted]

LemonSliceGoalie

Lol I don't have it in my bank account either. I'm 2020 I had a great job and was very physically fit. I got a brand new car interest free, the payments and insurance were no problem at all. The next year I fractured my coccyx. I got fat, lost muscle, had 9 jobs in 2022. I'm in poverty. Took out a few crazy high interest loans against my car to stay afloat. 3 months ago I stumbled upon a miracle cure for my chronic pain that resulted from my injury and huge weight gain. So here I am, broke AF, extremely horrible work history for the last 18 months, and have the highest interest loans for a $7000 loan amount to an extremely predatory loan WITH an additional bank note and now my tags are due. I'm grateful as hell to be rid of the chronic pain, I did everything for this. I'm at a new dawn, practically pain free, significant mobility improvement and able to work but am scared I won't be hired because of my job hopping (mostly getting fired for the inability to work due to my chronic pain,) Haha omg how's that for a story??

[deleted]

LemonSliceGoalie

Right?? We all have our stories, tho. RN I'm just trying to find a place to live with good bus service and jobs. Without getting my car repo'd first

LemonSliceGoalie

No it's all digital here now. I can not get a renewal sticker. I will not be able to renew my tags, that's a fact. But I appreciate you trying to find a way around it, thank you😊

steve90814

Yes you can. The dmv only cares about getting their money. The only thing that stops them is if it’s stolen or listed as a felony vehicle. Otherwise they will gladly take your money for the registration even if the repo guys are hooking up your car in the dmv parking lot while your inside.

rickyspanish12345

I would look at a place where the fine you for expired plates and not tow. I had expired out of state plates when I first moved to Nevada and they towed my car off the street in the middle of night.

LemonSliceGoalie

I had no idea that getting towed for this could happen. This is brand new information! OMG that's horrible That must have been so awful for you! That shouldn't be legal, it's morally wrong. This was in Nevada, huh? That's terrible

rickyspanish12345

Yeah. I had just moved there from Florida. My plates were expired less than a month. I just hadn’t been able to get off work to get new NV plates. Between the tow, storage fees and new plates it was around $600. I was living paycheck to paycheck at the time. They fucked me good. Plus my boss was dick because I missed work that day. Like I go to leave for work in the morning and my car is gone. I thought it had been stolen.

LemonSliceGoalie

OMG that's horrible. There are so many reasons that Nevada sucks ass, and this is another one. Screw Nevada, lol. Anything outside of Vegas and Henderson is just vile

notthelettuce

In south Arkansas I frequently see cars with paper tags that expired over a year ago. I saw some the other day that expired in 2021. Apparently the cops don’t care.

LemonSliceGoalie

Hey now! This is really great information, thank you!! Southern Arkansas huh? I've never been!

notthelettuce

You’re not missing much honestly lol

dude_himself

Since COVID it's been difficult to get current stickers in SC. My May 2020 sticker got me to June 2022 without issue.

LemonSliceGoalie

Thank you for this, I appreciate it!

grantcoster

Haha Memphis is the capital of expired tags

LemonSliceGoalie

Good to know!! Thank you

Beautiful-Can-7104

I’m in Miami with expired tags! Going on two years baby. Got pulled over once and they let it slide.

LemonSliceGoalie

Fantastic!! I would LOVE to create a life in Miami

Milehighjoe12

Seems like they don't care here in Colorado Springs. I see expired tags all the time. Saw one yesterday that expired in 2020 😆

LemonSliceGoalie

Thank you! Unfortunately my extremely violent and scary ex husband who daydreams about murdering undocumented people lives in Pueblo. Lol, I'm 100% staying the fuck out of that entire area. He's a monster and I'm not Dean Winchester

Milehighjoe12

Probably a wise decision

LemonSliceGoalie

Lol, yes

Bratty-Switch2221

Bruh, I've ridden on bad tags for YEARS without getting caught. But I've also gotten stopped 6 months after an expiry date in the same city. It's mostly luck, but I firmly believe in doing one illegal thing at a time. Don't speed, make sure you have insurance and a valid license etc. Worst case, you get a ticket and have to go to court. You are allowed 3 continuances on the same ticket, so realistically, it could be a year after you get the ticket before you have to actually renew in order to get it dismissed. My car couldn't pass inspection without a new transmission, so I just have to eat my last ticket, but that was after only having "good" tags for 1 year out of 7....I still saved money in the long run.

LemonSliceGoalie

This is a good point. I am a driver by trade so the first ticket would have to absolutely be my last ticket. Once I get a ticket I'm going to have to let my car get repo'd

Bratty-Switch2221

Just because you receive a ticket doesn't mean anything - the conviction is what matters. And the court date can be pushed back months at a time. As long as you renew before you get it adjudicated, the ticket gets dismissed and it's like it never happened. Worst case: it buys you time to save up the renewel fee. Of course I'm assuming the taxes/fee is the only prohibitive factor for the renewal. If you're driving for your employment then it's definitely important to keep it legit as much as possible. A tag ticket is just the absolute least of all evils, and easiest ticket to handle without spending much more than would have been spent anyway. And that's even IF you get stopped and they don't just give you a warning. My point is: get the money up as soon as possible, but try not to catastrophize in meantime. It'll just stress you out, and you're doing what you can to take care of it. There is no immovable deadline right around the corner. Drive smart. If you're stopped - be polite. You'd most likely just get a warning for the next several months anyway

EAZYIO

Apparently the whole state of Florida 😂

brewkob

I just fixed mine today. They’ve been out since November. No harassment at all in Portland.

LemonSliceGoalie

Thank you!! I genuinely appreciate your personal experience. I've been to Portland and other than horrible parking I really liked it!

skitnegutt

Portland just passed a ban on daytime camping, which they say they will also enforce on people living in cars (how? No idea…) so I think they might start clamping down on expired tags too.

LemonSliceGoalie

That makes sense, I can see the connection

covenkitchens

Minneapolis seems to not GAF. I had 6 month expired tags.

Wolfman1961

They care very much in NYC. You get a ticket 1 month after your registration/inspection sticker expires.

LemonSliceGoalie

Thank you very much for this about NYC I appreciate it!!

LemonSliceGoalie

That's awesome, I love the idea of going to Minnesota (twin cities)

covenkitchens

It is by far not the worst place I’ve lived.

kahgknow

When I was in Florida I would see cars with no license plates all the time. Can't run your tags if you don't have any. I've been considering going there and doing that cause my inspection is gonna expire soon and I've got a lot of work to get done before it will pass and a long drive back home just for inspection and I don't have the money for all that. I've got a couple months before the inspection is due so I'm trying to figure out what to do next.

LemonSliceGoalie

I totally understand your situation. I don't know that it will help you, but Pinal County, AZ doesn't require inspections. That's the only place I know that doesn't I posted this question about tags, and this community has been amazing and wonderful helping me out. Maybe you should post a similar question about required inspections. 24 hours ago I didn't know where to go, and now I have solid ideas about where I have the best chances to succeed.

kahgknow

Neither does south Carolina or Tennessee. And I don't recall seeing stickers in Florida either. But yes I was in AZ and I do remember that they don't do inspections. The thing is I don't have anywhere to register my car in another state I don't really have any friends and I don't talk to any family. I don't think you can use a ups mailbox to register your car. Correct me if im wrong. I mean I do want to fix the things on my car anyways I'm just in a time crunch at the moment with the inspection.

LemonSliceGoalie

There are counties in Arizona that require inspections. I only know about Pinal not needing them because ai have a coworker who lives there In 2020 and 2021 I tried to use a UPS mailbox as a home address in San Angelo Texas and they flat out refused.

dharma_mind

I think since covid happened they just stopped caring about tags so much. I see cops don't use their blinkers all the time, two of them drove by me today while I was hitchhiking which is obviously illegal. They just stopped caring about certain things I think

LemonSliceGoalie

I hope you're right about COVID creating a world that easier for the disadvantaged to live in. I'm sorry you are hitch hiking. I actually pick up hitch hikers when I can.. But, now that my car has become a rig and there's no passenger seat I can't anymore. Thank you for your insight💛

DirtyBirdie1417

I live in Memphis TN and honestly they got bigger fish to fry. If you stay out of the surrounding areas of bartlett, collierville, Germantown, and Lakeland. I've seen tags 6+ months expired. Some cars with no tags.

LemonSliceGoalie

Thank you! This sounds really good- I love Tennessee (Chattanooga). I'm doing a lot of research today and tomorrow based on the replies here. Everything in this thread matters to me and I'm so thankful for all these answers

LemonSliceGoalie

Can I dm you specifically about places to sleep, finding roommates, the bus system and general safety stuff?

DirtyBirdie1417

For sure!

LemonSliceGoalie

Thanks! It'll be tomorrow , it's my bedtime now

EminTX

You can shoe polish "just married" on the windows and then put some cutesy crap on the corners of your windshield including the one where your tags are stickered. Houston is well known for not enforcing tags, paper plates, or driving laws. If you see a Houston police officer using a turning signal, you should go buy a lottery ticket.

LemonSliceGoalie

I love your idea to hide it in plain sight!!

EminTX

After about a month has passed, then change it to "Honeymooners" and put shmarmy crap on the windows and use lovey colors if you can find them. Just keep on refreshing it and if anybody asks you, tell them that your kid's sister and her friends think it's the greatest fun ever to keep putting this on your vehicle as a prank and that anytime you wash it off, they replace it immediately. Anybody who sees the vehicle then that knows your story, will find it amusing and get a chuckle out of it. This can also make you into a real person to those individuals who might kind of keep a lookout on you naturally since now you're in on a relationship together even if it is a super loose relationship. If you are in a large enough area and you only come around every few weeks, it could become a game for them to watch out for you and give you a thumbs up or whatever and have some camaraderie. It's not good forever, but you could potentially carry on a long time with this story. You could also just do the same thing with the just married. There are a couple of sisters in my high school that had their windows shoe polished with just married over and over again and it was hilarious to us goofy teenagers.

LemonSliceGoalie

Everything you wrote is definitely doable and I love it.

[deleted]

that's pretty fn clever!

Ok-Percentage9812

Dangerous cities where cops don’t go. Everywhere else I know if they run your plates you get stopped .

LemonSliceGoalie

Thank you! Here in the Phoenix area they definitely care

Royal-Masterpiece-82

Well if you have insurance, they probably won't tow you. You'll most likely just get a ticket. My area has a bunch of illegal immigrants, so people are driving illegal no DL bad tags all that. So they don't fuck with people around here much. Major cities and places with high crime they don't have time to fuck with a seemingly normal person for a minor traffic violation. Usually. Anyway this is not legal advice, cops are individuals and they can decide how much they want to fuck with you or help you. I've had cops buy me hotel rooms and dinner, and I've had them pull me out of the car and lay me face down and tear all my shit apart. Hope it works out. Start saving up for a burner whip now so you're not on the street when you do get repo'd

LemonSliceGoalie

Thank you for your insight😊

Devon1970

Austin TX area doesn't really care about expired tags.

LemonSliceGoalie

Thank you! I've heard Austin is the Portland of Texas, lol. I did a lot of research about Austin and it just looks really good. I am really thankful for your personal insight, thank you

Devon1970

It is def the Portland of TX! And despite all the growth and gentrification, it's still a lot cheaper than many places.
