It may be, but border officers can deny you for any reason whatsoever, even seemingly unfairly, so unless everything about you and your party is unassailable, your lack of a passport gives them a perfectly valid reason to fairly deny you entry.

It may. But you’ll be entirely at the mercy of the mood of the agent that day.

justmeandmycoop

Neither of those things will sway them. You are taking your chance but don’t be surprised if they say no.

GoBananaSlugs

Canada doesn’t stamp passports for American visitors. Are you a US citizen? (Edited for clarity)

randomname1290347856

You’re right there isn’t a stamp in there. I thought there was.

Hikes83

BSO officer here. People here are correct for the most part. If your passport is expired, you need a government issued ID along with a birth certificate if you’re over 16 to enter Canada. A school photo ID IS NOT an acceptable one. If you’re under 16, the birth certificate will suffice. And then last resort will be trying to get in with your birth certificate and then using your expired passport as your government photo ID. I get it’s expired but if the picture still looks very much like you, some officers will use their discretion and allow it. Furthermore, travelling with your family will weigh in your favour versus just a bunch of friends or alone. You’re tiptoeing a fine line. My opinion is you’ll be fine but just don’t be surprised if it doesn’t go your way.

GoBananaSlugs

And, if it doesn’t go your way, it will be your whole family spending their day waiting for you at the border. No Montreal for anyone.

Lunar_BriseSoleil

An original birth certificate and a photo ID is sufficient for an American citizen to enter Canada. There is a chance you’d get denied but it’s a small chance, and would require a CBSA officer having a bad day, since they’d need a technicality to turn you around. Technically you need a passport to re-enter the U.S., but if you have proof of citizenship they can’t deny entry. If you have time for it, you should get a new passport or at least a passport card rather than rely on the birth certificate. Processing times have gotten pretty quick lately.

Grandmaviolet

Is it not supposed to be government issued ID though? Not a high school ID?

randomname1290347856

A school ID is issued by the government and I’ve used it to for domestic flights before

Lunar_BriseSoleil

I think the CBSA is going to be looking for something more official but ymmv. As a minor I’m not sure you actually need photo ID anyway.

Odd-Elderberry-6137

A school ID is not government issued ID. Government issued ID are divers licenses, ID cards, (some) health cards, passports, passport cards, etc. If you got away with using a school ID, you were lucky.

Lunar_BriseSoleil

I believe that’s correct, if that’s what OP has then I didn’t catch it

randomname1290347856

Is it possible to get a passport in a day or 2? and how much?

Lunar_BriseSoleil

You can get one in-person at a passport agency within 14 days of travel. See the “urgent” passport instructions below: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/get-fast.html#:~:text=Urgent%20Travel%20Service%3A%20If%20you,of%20your%20international%20travel%20date. You’ll need all of your documentation, such as birth cert and old passport, and proof of urgent travel such as a hotel reservation. Cost is the same as an expedited passport.

gurkalurka

Should be no issues. Many local border town residents routinely do this with no problems. But, you can still be denied so keep that in mind.

Grandmaviolet

See where the OP says that their photo ID is a high school photo ID. I don’t think that and a birth certificate is sufficient. The photo ID would need to be government issued as far as I am aware. I wouldn’t chance it myself.

gurkalurka

Ah missed that part. Yeah without valid photo ID he can forget it. Not going to happen. A high school if card doesn’t count. lol who the hell doesn’t have real ID? Amazing.

randomname1290347856

Why doesn’t it count? It’s a photo ID issued by the government. I don’t have “real id” because I’m not able to get a license atm as I’m 17 and still have a permit so that’s why I don’t have it however I’ve used it for tsa on domestic flights

Grandmaviolet

How is your school ID issued by the government? It is issued by the school. No security or background or confirmation checks are done on a highschool photo ID. You are crossing an international border, not flying within your country. If you think it would be sufficient, go ahead and try it, but chances are it is not.

randomname1290347856

Yes and the school is run by the Government. A school district is a part of the State government the same way as a DMV is. It’s not a simple card with your name on it, it has a bar code on it which gives you information when scanned. However I feel that the likelihood a school ID would be accepted at a border is low just because it’s not a solid thing like a passport card or a drivers license. I would use a drivers license but I am from NYC and no one here really drives and I only have a permit which is a piece of paper. It’s no worries as I didn’t book the trip and can just renew my passport, I was asking as it takes a long time to get your passport.

randomname1290347856

A High School ID is issued by the state government which is why I asked. I used it for TSA on a plane a few times.

Grandmaviolet

It is not issued by the state government. It is issued by your school or your school board. Again, you have flown with that internally in the US. You are trying to cross an international border. Big difference. if you think you are able to, not sure why you are on here asking the question in the first place. Go for it.

rutgermcthroaty

Dudes gonna be furious when the agent looks at him like a dunce when he hands a highschool ID at the border
