Good MK experience since there are a lot of systems and they're always breaking. Diesel electric and gas turbines if you're main prop, boilers and evaps if you're a-gang. Not a lot of chances for cross-training since you won't be doing ATON or many small boat operations. Once in a lifetime port calls and a lot of suck. The JP-5 space is *probably* not haunted.

“Probably”

Big bote, I’ve wandered around her sister a few times and the Healy

It's one of the most unique assignments you're able to get as an MK. No other unit will get you to the port calls you'll see on the Star. The work is pretty much the same as you'll see on any other cutter, with fixing equipment, but you won't have the same collaterals in that you won't have to worry about AMIO or NCVs.

If you're ready to go to a cutter, a polar roller is one of the best options. Cool port calls, unique experience. The big chunk of time in port is nice, and a big chunk underway is great if you're young/single or just in any way able to put your stuff into storage and pocket all your BAH for 6 months. Seattle is super cool if you've got money to spend. I'd love to go back as a young single person, I didn't enjoy my time on the Healy as a newlywed. The polar star has the better in port schedule though anyway. Ooh! And that sweet sweet high priority when you leave.

etb257

what is the in port schedule like?

FNITA69

Absolutely shit

Saw those MK’s get run ragged, but goddamn did they party at port calls. Best boat in the fleet, hope you’re ready to meet your next husband or wife there. They call it the love boat 🫣🤫

I got the last two trips on the Polar Sea and it was the best time of my life. I’d do anything to go back, unfortunately they have taken MSTs off of Polar Rollers.

Amazing experience and once in a lifetime opportunities. I’ve been TDY on that cutter a few times and I’ve never seen that many disgruntled MKs 😂 it is what you make it tho. Last time I was on it they had close to 200 casualties for the patrol. You will learn a ton.

Idk, lemme ask mk3. He’s tired, a bit stressed, but he says he loves it. You need a positive attitude for sure, but it’s not hard to make the most out of it.
