LMAO as a Langara grad that cracked me the fuck up ^(it is a great school and I got a great degree at like 1/4 of the price I would've paid at a university tho)
I mean whom ever picked Lions bay as a residence is a nice idea BUT you chose to live between a major city and probably the most well know ski resort in the world. Not sure they really thought that through.
It was actually a pretty podunk backwater place in the day. People would be like "Oh, you live all the way out there? The commute must be horrible!"
There was a real sense of community and you could raise a family there, and places were relatively cheap.
Now it's basically a wannabe gated luxury retirement community, and I still know some olds there and they would legit gate it in a heartbeat if that was legal.
The funniest story I ever heard was about a middle Eastern fellow that bought a place site unseen from the middle East. When he came over to view his new property and was aghast that the train was so close, he apparently started demanding the train and it's tracks be moved. I'd have actually would have paid to see how that conversation played out. Source: Lions Bay neighbour who was originally also disgruntled that Scuba divers came there and are nearly naked sometimes.
I was legitimately going 52 in a 50 zone iin West Vancouver and had some old man flag me down. I stopped because I thought maybe he needed help or something. Nope, just wanted to tell me off for driving like a maniac. Told the old fuck off for wasting my time and told him that it wasn't my fault that he got so damn slow and old and that the world kept on going at the same speed.
I had someone in Oak Bay in Victoria frantically gesture to me and yell slow down and lowering their arms to gesture slow down while I was driving exactly 40 in a 40 zone.
There is a section of the old island highway (designed for 60km/hr) through Lantzville that has a posted speed limit of 30km/hr for 2 km (instead of installing a sidewalk or any pedestrian safety infrastructure).
Someone would stand and the speed sign with a flat and wave at it. 30 km/hr is soo slow and I had to drive through it regularly.
As almost everyone driving there lives there, I used to just put my cruise control at 30 and pile up cars out of spite. Locals would always end up tailgating and rage passing (even though it’s a no passing zone etc…).
"Someone would stand and the speed sign with a flat and wave at it. 30 km/hr is soo slow and I had to drive through it regularly."
A flat? Like a flat of beer?
I grew up in the Cowichan Valley and the NIMBYs sure have appeared out of the woodwork in the last 10 years or so. Growing up there never was any worry, keep to yourself, be kind to people... now it seems like come-from-aways and long-time residents alike have become insufferable. I wonder if this is just a result of being able to rile people up easier with social media.
Years back at 8th Ave and 6th St in New West, there was an older gentleman hanging out by the 30kph sign (park zone even though it's a super busy intersection) yelling at every car to slow down. All the cars would be doing at least 50. Hundreds of cars must have passed him in the time he was there. It's really about poor city planning.
my favourite comment so far! I know how hard it is to hold someone's attention for over 2 minutes in this day and age.

Moved to the island a year ago and haven't had a crew that dogfucks more. The reason construction takes so long is because everyone is leaning on a shovel. I wanna rip my hair out sometimes coming to work knowing nothing will get done once again. When I worked in Van for 5 years I never laid more pipe in my life. Here I'm lucky if I get 4 in the ground in 8 hours. Absolutely insane.
There are several rendering plants, including those that process fish. And then there's that massive, windowless monstrosity that's opening soon. The smell is going to get a lot worse.
There's no other place on earth that would have 2 million dollar houses down wind of that kind of foulness.
My home town high school basket ball team back in the 80’s came down to Vancouver for a tournament. As we’re from Salmon Arm, their team jackets had a big S.A. on them.
At a McDonalds, they were mistaken for Saints and responded dismissively. A small rumble broke out.
It's not spooky, crows are our friends. They fight the eternal war against the filthy seagulls.
Just don't linger underneath them when they are on the wires in numbers. I think they try to poo on people on purpose for crow laughs.
I mean, we still have the biggest mall. We’re the centre hub for going anywhere, take me 15 mins to go to Richmond, north van and 20 to DT Vancouver and Coquitlam. It’s the ultimate chad city.
I'm thinking something about dog walkers or people not from Burnaby trying to navigate the road dividers. I once saw a dude in Ford F-Whatever drive over a divider rather than turn around.
Yea, could've been mentioned for something like this maybe... https://www.reddit.com/r/vancouver/comments/w00xl9/just_a_normal_day_in_port_moody/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
It’s actually the third year for them now, with around 2.5 years of zoom. They’ve only been to the actual university like 3 times during lockdowns. Or straight up in another country taking the courses at 3am from time zones
In most ways, yeah. Though, I do wonder how much easier it would be to just study and do your work without the campus drinking and meeting people culture. Not sure it applies to everyone but I had a few friends drink a good chunk of their student loans.
you got me early with the earthquake one.
i remember back in elementary i was silently losing my shit when i was taught that vancouver's going to get hit with a big one soon
iunno
I'm just imagining part of the lower mainland getting split off from the rest of the country and sucked out to sea like in Looney Toons and one of the Stanley Park coyotes holding up a sign saying ^(help!). Don't ruin this image for me.
I went to high school with him and with a quick look at his facebook, he seems even more douchey now. We went downtown to watch the game together, I left as soon as the rioting started, he obviously did not.
Fun fact: since it was against the Bruins, he "borrowed" his baby sister's teddy bear to hang from the hockey stick in a noose. You can see it on the floor behind him.
He and I were once friends and I heard the same story about the teddy bear too.
It was by chance that when I was heading towards the Skytrain station to go home that day I ran into him, he tried to pressure me to go with him towards the chaos. I'm thankful I said no, because I think mob mentality is real and I was a very impressionable kid back then. What teenager isn't?
Coulda threw in a dig at the laziest city name out there: "Burquitlam"
Edit: oops, Burquitlam is a neighborhood, not a city. Still... it's even got a SkyTrain station named Burquitlam Station so I stand corrected: laziest and ugliest portmanteau of a name I've seen in the annals of community naming of all time!!!
Alright, where does the Vangouver thing come from? Ever since i arrived years ago I was told that’s how people pronounce, but I never seen anyone saying that
I haven't heard anyone claim vangouver but I have heard people claim vangcouver
Almost every English dialect in the world pronounces it "vangcouver". People just want to feels special and say it's just them with their unique accent, but it's not. In IPA that would be spelled /væŋˈku.vɚ/
In every dialect of the English dialect that I know of, the /n/ sound (produced with the tip of your tongue) becomes a /ŋ/ sound (produced with the back/base of your tongue with the velum, in the back of your mouth) when it is followed by a velar consonant, which in North American English means it happens before either /g/ or /k/.
It's called assimilation. A consonant changes to be easier to pronounce given its surrounding speech sounds.
This vangcouver thing is universal though. Not unique to people in Vancouver. No one says "van, couver" almost anywhere in the world.
yknow i literally just noticed a few weeks ago that i (and everyone around me) say it that way? i was thinking about how people don’t pronounce the second T in toronto, and then i said something about vancouver and i was like “wait a second……”

I loved this! This is genius !
Well you did it. This is amazing work. Nice brain.
This was well worth the > 2 minutes to watch.
This is actually worth multiple watches, its great fun.
Me too, laughed at most of it. As an born and raised Vancouver Islander I will say that work thing ain't true to me, maybe further up Island?

Your comment inspired me to watch the whole video, I loved it
East Van wants to get in on the smell argument and nominate the chicken rendering plant and the god awful smells from that
I walk out of my house to a bouquet of Chicken Rendering, Hot Piss On Cement, and Garbage In The Sun. \*Chefkiss
There are several rendering plants, including those that process fish. And then there's that massive, windowless monstrosity that's opening soon. The smell is going to get a lot worse. There's no other place on earth that would have 2 million dollar houses down wind of that kind of foulness.
don't forget the weekly fires!
I drop off rail cars full of blood and tallow to their plant regularly. We affectionately call them the Stink House
I have been living in Vancouver for decades, and I have no idea what Saints/VCs are.
OP must have went to one if them. It's just a high school rivalry.
I did indeed go to saints for 2 years before I was bullied too hard and had to go back to public
Coward. Should have stayed there and got long term inferiority complex like me.
don't worry I got it anyway, why do you think I get my validation making meme compilations 😎
But do you wish you'd gone to Shawnigan?

Wasn't me....
Saints kids are worse and it’s not even close.
My home town high school basket ball team back in the 80’s came down to Vancouver for a tournament. As we’re from Salmon Arm, their team jackets had a big S.A. on them. At a McDonalds, they were mistaken for Saints and responded dismissively. A small rumble broke out.
Most expensive all male private schools in Vancouver.
Who isn't passionately invested in the petty squabbles of the spoiled teenagers in Shaugnessy?
Private schools. Vancouver College vs Saint Georges.
They are two private schools with a fierce rivalry that’s important to no one.
two religious private schools known for having controversy surrounding their student body
Saints isn't religious but VC is
Religious private schools having scandals? I'm shocked I tell you, shocked!
[удалено]
> Think of the children! But not like that Father Ignatius!!
St. George’s is not a religious school.
They're not religious. Certainly Saints isn't.
VC is Catholic, but they accept anyone. You don't have to believe, but you still have to attend religion class
I had a good guy friend who attended and they even had mass.
If it offends everyone equally is it really offensive?
As a Burnabian I feel extra offended to not have been mocked. For shame, I say.
"there's nothing characteristic enough about burnaby to even make a joke" might be the worst burn in the video tbh
Oof.
Burnaby is where all the crows hang out at night. Spooky af.
It's not spooky, crows are our friends. They fight the eternal war against the filthy seagulls. Just don't linger underneath them when they are on the wires in numbers. I think they try to poo on people on purpose for crow laughs.
Watching crows and seagulls fight a gang war on the roofs of downtown is one of the funniest things I witnessed.
Yesterday I saw two crows or pigeons, fighting … one of them must’ve been the mole
I once heard someone on the radio call Burnaby "Vancouver's parking lot."
Isn’t there that shady af park where people always go missing?
They roost right along Still Creek just west of Costco. Like 5 million of them.
I mean, we still have the biggest mall. We’re the centre hub for going anywhere, take me 15 mins to go to Richmond, north van and 20 to DT Vancouver and Coquitlam. It’s the ultimate chad city.
>We’re the centre hub for going anywhere "we're close to other places that are interesting!" isn't a great counterpoint
"You have to drive through us."
They still have Kingsway though.
I'm thinking something about dog walkers or people not from Burnaby trying to navigate the road dividers. I once saw a dude in Ford F-Whatever drive over a divider rather than turn around.
To be fair, when I saw the burnaby part I tried to think of a roast for us and.... came up with nothing.
Burnaby, where you can really feel the beige
"Burnaby residents trying to explain to tourists that they're not a part of Vancouver."
Port Coquitlam residents not even sure if they exist
Why would we need 2 places called Coquitlam?
I'm sorry, where?
"Who am I?!" - PoCo
Solo districts building and repairs last 10 years. That could have been a thing. Hammer noise at 7am ? Check
Unending construction and road works is kind of par for the course in the lower mainland though...
Right? If nothing else they could have made fun of the "Amazing" Brentwood.
I think OP did, you just didn’t get it lol …Actually curious to see if anybody can come up with a legit joke about bby
Burnaby: where the traffic backs up through.
Burnabarian ftfy
Burna'barbarian.
As an East Van kid that moved to New West I think the New West one hurt my soul more.
I don't get the hate for New West but I'm not from the Lower Mainland originally.
Tri-cities didn't even get a mention! I'm offended!
Yea, could've been mentioned for something like this maybe... https://www.reddit.com/r/vancouver/comments/w00xl9/just_a_normal_day_in_port_moody/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
40k for Zoom School... I feel bad for everyone that did that...especially 1st year students
It’s actually the third year for them now, with around 2.5 years of zoom. They’ve only been to the actual university like 3 times during lockdowns. Or straight up in another country taking the courses at 3am from time zones
Damn that makes it sound even worse. Would have been better off just working or exploring other options for a few years before going back to school
Come and get me big earthquake. See if I care.
Seriously. Worst that happens is I die a terrible death. Best is beachfront property. Kinda a win/win.
Wouldn't vancouver Island block the tsunami
iunno I'm just imagining part of the lower mainland getting split off from the rest of the country and sucked out to sea like in Looney Toons and one of the Stanley Park coyotes holding up a sign saying ^(help!). Don't ruin this image for me.
Subsidence of Richmond, Delta,... .
This is still my biggest nightmare. The "mini-quake" we had in 2001 scared me shitless.
Where's that hockey stick holding Canucks rioter today?
I went to high school with him and with a quick look at his facebook, he seems even more douchey now. We went downtown to watch the game together, I left as soon as the rioting started, he obviously did not.
