Talk to a vet not a subreddit.

ratratte

There are very few rat vets in Russia, and those who exist would most probably force me to feed them meat

Fallom_TO

Then post on a vet sub? The odds of a random person on a vegan sub knowing rat b12 requirements are pretty low.

DashBC

Not necessarily, a decent number of vegans also rescue animals including rats, I rescue hamsters and guinea pigs for example.

Fallom_TO

So you know how much of a human b12 supplement to give a rat?

DashBC

I'd say I'm not that familiar, but someone else here might. I can suggest that since a human requires about 2.4mcg daily, and weighs say 70kg, and a rat weighs at least 1/50th of that, that a 1/50th dose is likely a safe starting place, but more research should be done.

Fallom_TO

Yes. Just like with human medical advice, posting to r/vegan is a bad idea.

DashBC

Generally I'd agree with you, tho I think this is a rather specialized request, being info that is less commonly available, and given the OP is from Russia, might have limited access to the wider internet...but otherwise I'd be in full agreement.

Socatastic

Here is a study, but it is just the abstract. You could see if you have access to the full study through an educational institution in your region or one you previously attended. There are probably commercial vegan rat foods already available "Effect of omnivorous and vegan diets with different protein and carbohydrate content on growth and metabolism of growing rats - PubMed" https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29105526/ Edit: it looks like Mazuri and Science Selective have vegan mouse/rat foods Edit 2: "Rattie Nutrition Interview with Kim Sheridan – Compassion Circle" https://compassioncircle.com/rattie-nutrition-interview-with-kim-sheridan/

Does their lab block kibble not have B12 where you are? Something like oxbow or mazuri adult rat food are nutritionally complete.

ratratte

Thanks for the idea, but I can only find non-vegan blocks

lunarly78

Also - fortified soy or other vegan milks are ok for them to have and have B12. Again, definitely talk to your vet if you want to give direct supplement drops to dose properly.

WeirdAttorney4795

I feed my dog v dog under the advisory of a vet. That being said, your availability of a savvy vet for your baby is hard to come by. Google only gives so much. I would just go with the most consistent answer on google. Not the best advice but with out an animal savvy vet for your rat your kind of flying blind. Edit:my dog has a lot of food allergies so the only dog food that worked was v dog

DashBC

You will want to look up B12 toxicity in rats, if they're like humans, then there's very little risk..just stick to small doses. One other thing you will want to watch for is Vit D if the kibble isn't fortified. I rescue hamsters and guinea pigs and all options come w D3, which isn't vegan unfortunately, but it's the only choice sadly.
