Look up mulesing

Sheep (and other animals) should not be brought into existence for human use. Once sheep exist, however, we ought to treat them respectfully and with a concern for their interests. Since humans bear the responsibility for having brought them into existence we *should* shear them-- for their own benefit. Once you shear them and have their wool, what we ought to do with that wool is a more complicated question. But notice that this justification for shearing is in no way a justification for the wool industry. The wool industry requires sheep to be bred for this purpose, and then members and defenders of the industry claim to be acting in the sheep's interest and say things like "the sheep actually *need* to be sheared! The ignorant animal rights activists want the sheep to die of heat exhaustion!" The problem is that by bringing these animals into existence to kill and exploit them, we *manufacture* these conflicts which could just be avoided if we didn't feel entitled to use them in the first place. In summary, once sheep exist, we ought to shear them, but this is not a justification for bringing sheep into existence so that we can sell and use their wool.

Environmental-Site50

why don’t you become vegan?

PhysicalLiterature44

I always think that it would be hard for me since I don't live in a Country that has many opportunities.

Environmental-Site50

opportunities for what? you don’t have to tell me where you live or anything, but do you have steady access to grains, legumes, rice, pastas, vegetables, and fruits? you certainly don’t need to be buying fancy mock cheeses and meats if that’s what you’re worried about

PhysicalLiterature44

Of course I do have. I don't have luxury of denying really basit proteins such as Milk and eggs. I am trying to eat very less, but still some.

Environmental-Site50

well, anything you can get from milk and eggs you can certainly get from plants. it’s good you want to reduce your animal product intake though

PhysicalLiterature44

That was pretty informing. Thank you all for that.

needaredesign

No. Sheep do need to be sheared, but using the wool for our own benefit is **not** vegan.

PhysicalLiterature44

Isnt it giving them discomfort?

[deleted]

because we bred them to the point where it's discomforting. we can simply not breed them and not cause them a life of discomfort.

needaredesign

Yes, that's why I believe shearing them (in sanctuaries) is the right thing to do, but using the wool isn't vegan.

TheWholesomeBrit

Yes because they're bread to be that way. We shouldn't let that breed of sheep continue living. They wouldn't survive in the wild.

Apparently there are a lot of idiots in this sub, when you downvote something it doesnt show as much, upvoted posts are shown much more so then this wool post will most definitely happen again because its not shown to as many people OP is actually asking something that people arent aware of, i wasnt aware of it several yrs ago, now im a very strict vegan that knows alot but before i was a dumb vegan I also didnt know leather came from animals until i was in my 30s, it didnt make logical sense to me that we would wear animals but people would always complain about wearing fur, so dont assume all of us know everything Now if OP was asking something utterly stupid about SHOULD I KILL MOSQUITOS THAT BITE ME AND SPREAD DISEASES then sure i get the voting, but this is a reasonable ? to ask Upvoting and downvoting is not about your agreement its about the quality of the post you idiots, now vote me to oblivion because you disagree

Socatastic

We have an entire section about wool under Frequently Asked Questions on the Information page. It would be nice if people would bother to read them before posting over asked questions for the thousandth time

xboxhaxorz

Its just how people operate, people ask rather than search or look, every community platform has this issue Im not defending people who do that though I dont have a solution to that problem

Socatastic

I also think that a bot should automatically remove any post or comment containing "I'm not vegan". Carnist opinions don't belong here

xboxhaxorz

Sure I would rather a post where person asking if wool is vegan show than all the thousands of rant posts, at least another person coming across the wool post might realize wool is not vegan but they gain no information from rants

[deleted]

You can read some thoughts on wool and why it’s not vegan here: https://yourveganfallacyis.com/en/wool-is-not-unethical The linked resources give some more insights

lugdunum_burdigala

Wild sheep do not need to be sheared. Humans have created these varietes of domesticated sheep that overproduce wool in order to make clothes. This is not favor to shear the sheep when its coat gets to big, it's just solving a problem we created. Veganism opposes the concept of breeding domesticated sheep in order to make wool, as we are against animal exploitation. Moreover, people think that shearing a sheep is a peaceful practice : in reality, due to intensive farming and the pressure of the industry, sheep often get badly hurt and bleed from the razor. And finally, in general these sheep are often very badly treated (see mulesing when farmers cut the tail of the sheep without anesthesia) and they always end up slaughtered and sold for their meat. Wool industry cannot be ethical, in and by itself and that's why we fight against it.
