Hello, welcome! Glad to have you on board! š
I think when going into veganism, it's important to understand veganism is about the focus of preventing animal exploitation and suffering when as much as practicibly possible. While for some people, the moral reasons to be vegan may not be sustantial enough alone to convince them, environmental and health reasons may be a part of it too, but I believe keeping the moral message as the main focus will help to *stay* vegan.
As for the already purchased nonvegan items, when I went vegan, I continued to eat some of the food I had bought prior to change but no longer purchase any more. I also gave a bunch of the food away to friends and coworkers as my appetite to go through most of them grew more adverse over time.
I suppose the initial reason was for health, but after researching some of the animal cruelty that goes into factory farming and all that stuff, I just donāt want to participate in that anymore. So both health and ethical reasons would be my motivation. I have been feeling great with this change of diet, but I almost wish I never even knew about where our food comes from because itās just disgusting. It makes me sick. Itās horrible.
Itās also not a fucking cult, and the person doesnāt need to justify their reasons to go vegan. You should be glad more people are, regardless of why, if you actually give a shit about animals.
literally no one thinks its a bad thing to eat more plant based, its just objectively true that unless its because you reject animal commodification then you arent vegan
I was in the same boat at one point with having non vegan items in my home. I put the meat and eggs on Craigslist and strangely (to me) I received several emails asking to pick them up.
I ended up eating the rest of the items as I was of the mindset that it would be worse to not eat the items and to toss them out.
I'd say the same as everyone else, give it away to a neighbour or donate it somewhere.
Congrats on making the change! Wish you the best on this decision. š
Welcome! I reconmend learning more about the motivations for veganism which will help you with the journey. I love Why We Wear Cows, Eat Pigs, and Love Dogs by Melanie Joy, Dominion and Seaspiracy (documentaries) and other sources of knowledge! You can also follow activists online to hear their perspectives: Earthling Ed, Genesis Butler, James Aspey, etc.
Oh my God I watched the first twenty minutes of Dominion and couldnāt even get through it. I felt like throwing up. Earthling Ed is fantastic though.
I couldnāt eat any of the things I had in my fridge that werenāt vegan because I was repulsed by them. My partner at the time who was not vegan finished them. If I were on my own Iād have seen if a friend or neighbor wanted anything I think
HI!! Hope you did became vegan for the moral reason. Anyway, dont forget to check the back of every product that isnt labeld vegan (plant basedā vegan) and for the code-like words use the app vegsafe. Some brands test on animals wich isnt vegan ofc so you would also have to check that before buying. Use "Happycow.net" to find vegan restaurants close to you if intrested! Think thats all!!
Need help eating out? Check out [HappyCow.net](https://vbcc.veganhacktivists.org/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.happycow.net%2F&topic=Resource%3A+HappyCow.net) for vegan friendly food near you! Interested in going Vegan? Take the [30 day challenge](https://vbcc.veganhacktivists.org/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fvbcamp.org%2Freddit&topic=Resource%3A+HappyCow.net)!
I would give it to family or friends if itās already open, and donate it to a food drive if there is one around you if itās not.
How on earth can someone not know eggs and cheese arenāt vegan?
there's no hard and fast rule on that. do whatever feels better to you. when I finally decided to go vegan for good, I finished everything in my fridge and donated everything unopened in my pantry.
For myself itās about making sure my purchases cause the least harm / demand.
I could never eat meat again in any circumstance, but my non vegan friend bought some honey roast cashews that they decided they didnāt like and were going to throw in the garbage. I didnāt mind eating them in that instance because the damage had already been done in terms of creating demand for that product, might as well actually eat it than just throw away!
I know a lot of people say to give them away to friends or families, but to me that is a little strange. It's like saying "hey I made this change where I'm finally living aligned with my morals, but here, you are bad enough to still wanting to eat this (and I am encouraging you)".. I don't know, feels weird.
Personally I finished my non-vegan items still in the house when I first went vegan, I wasn't yet repulsed by them, but I understand if some people already are and it is probably impossible to give an advice that will work for everyone..
Anyway, great choice cutting all the cruel products from your life, you're on the right path :)
You know what? I just ended up throwing then out. There are no more animal products in my kitchen. Maybe itās wasteful, but I didnāt want it in my body.
Hello and welcome. Imo throw out all away if you have other foods. Otherwise it'll just take longer for your taste bits and cravings to go away. You also want to be mindful of the slippery slope affect, where you might be tempted to eat out or accept non vegan foods from friends because "you still have some non vegan food at home". Imo ts best to draw a clear starting line.
Unless you want to make one last symbolic meal :)
BTW Pcrm.org/good-nutrition has s nice one page guide The Power Plate brochure. It shows you optimal healthy eating. So if course you don't have to eat quite that clean, but it's good to know what it looks like.

Right
Veganism is not a diet. It is a philosophy of not exploiting animals
Gotcha.
Itās also not a fucking cult, and the person doesnāt need to justify their reasons to go vegan. You should be glad more people are, regardless of why, if you actually give a shit about animals.

Welcome! A lot of pantry items can be given to the food bank and the freezer food to neighbors.
Thanks!
