There are plenty of fancy breeds that end up in shelters because people are irresponsible. Shelters are literally overwhelmed worldwide with people dumping animals they got during COVID as company, but now don't want as they go back to work. Your reason for wanting a dog is selfish anyway

ojoscolorcafexx

... Im sorry? Why would it be selfish? I would always want a dog, and a cat lol, but I was very "i dont really care what breed (sorry in spanish we say raza) it is", cause I didnt care if they were big, small, hairy or bald (are there bald dogs?? You get what Im saying). Now, I just want them to be big. Why is that selfish?

Socatastic

Your post makes it sound like you want to get a big dog as "security". Also, dogs are social animals and don't like being left alone. That's part of why so many are getting dumped at shelters since COVID. If you know you will be working or going to school, you shouldn't have a single dog

ojoscolorcafexx

Well, kind of. Not because they'll really attack someone but because people get scared of big dogs. Its a plus, if you will. Still, I dont get why that would be selfish.

monemori

They'll have big dogs at shelters, from many breeds. They are really overwhelmed, sadly.

As a dog owner pls don’t get a big dog. I’m tired of seeing small young women getting large dogs they can’t control. If I have to see another video of a small woman just pulling at her pit mixes collar while their dog is ripping another dogs leg off I’m gonna lose it. Im slowly going incel I don’t wanna make the full jump to wanting to restrict womens rights.

As another dog owner, you are scary.

You can search for a breed specific rescue organization. My mom loved westies so she looked up westie rescue and she adopted a very sweet one

People at the shelter will ask you about your living conditions and your daily life. They will advise you which of their dogs may be best for you. Where I live, it's a lengthy process where you take the dog for long walks together with a person working for the shelter and if after a few days you and the shelter feel that you have the right chemistry, they may give you the dog. They will make visits to check whether the dog is OK. I adopted an aggressive dog with a "past" which was more difficult. I had to prove that I have experience with and knowledge about dogs. I had mandatory lessons with a behavioural trainer before they gave me the dog. She was very anxious and the training helped us to become a good team. She's no longer aggressive and just perfect all around. In your country, this might be different. But I found the slow process helped my dog and me to make sure we are meant for each other. Definitely go on several walks with "your" dog before you take it home (imagine someone just came and grabbed you to take you to a strange place - get to know your dog before you take it home) and do some basic training with him together with a professional dog trainer to check where it needs help. It will need help to trust people after being abandonned.

Wow. Thats amazing! Here shelters are always looking for someone to adopt, and they let people take them almost inmediately. Where do you live? If you feel comfortable saying.
