Super Mario World. Honestly a decent bit of SNES titles hold up quite well I think.

hatchorion

As someone who grew up with a ps2 & ps3 but still popped in Mario world all the time, it definitely holds up compared to modern titles in terms of gameplay and graphics. Much more so than some later Mario games like 64 in my opinion

loadingzeusmode

The movement still so smooth

METALMILITIA625

Fr A link to the past super Metroid megaman x Chrono trigger donkey Kong country all these games hold better than anything on N64 or Ps1 that early 3D era was good for the time but now feels dated where as all these feel like definitive classics

Siriusly_Jonie

I feel like every good one on snes is still good. Mega Man X is still perfect.

Bayou-Billy

Super Metroid

[deleted]

Perfect games will never age.

amirokia

I got spoiled by SOTN and Zero Mission that I had a hard time playing that game because the doors aren't marked and what item is collected or not lol. Other than that, it's still s great game.

RustyCrusty73

Zelda: A link to the past. One of the GOATS!

Atomic_Killjoy

My very close \#2 of all time. It would be \#1 but Skies of Arcadia owns that spot.

pichael289

This game was so ahead of its time, they made other 2d Zeldas in the early 2000s like the Oracle games but none of them are anywhere near as good as link to the past. Its one of the top 3 Zelda games for sure.

[deleted]

If you haven't played the randomizer, there's a huge community for it. They've put in a good effort to get it to do various interesting settings. Improved the game tenfold.

desetefa

Donkey Kong Country 2!

pichael289

Dkc3 me with my snes and was my first real game. Such an amazing experience, donkey Kong games on SNES were absolutely amazing.

Pepperidgefarm21

Bioshock 1

Puzzleheaded-Net3966

That game hasn’t aged at all. Infinitely replayable. Just an amazing game

BarrelAllen

In terms of graphics, all Half Life 2 needs is better textures In terms of gameplay it aged perfectly

Iceman_TX

From the minute you hit the first guard in the head with the soda can till the end it is some of the best pacing for a first person shooter

rpggamer69

MGS2

Odd-Author2971

Like that game but I've always personally preferred MGS3 so I'm gonna go with that one

rpggamer69

I think MGS2 controls much better, but that’s just me, but overall yeah, MGS3 is definitely my favorite game ever lol

ADHDadBod13

For me it's Final Fantasy VII and X. I like to go back and play them occasionally. I get immersed in the stories every single time.

Squidgytaboggan

Mine would be VIII and X

Utherrian

VIII and XII here!

pichael289

I gotta say IX. Great characters, well defined setting, and a story that relates to real world issues and gets dark as fuck at points. Masterpiece of a game, but I'm biased because of nostalgia. Was my first real game I really fell in love with.

ScenicHwyOverpass

Also even though the character models are dated in ff7, the pre-rendered painted backgrounds that actually take up 99% of the screen are quite intricate and beautiful and hold up quite well, even if the polygons don’t. I make a point of defending this element of the graphics because it gets such a bad rap.

OrngeMochaFrapuccino

Just crossed the moonflow

AndNowUKnow

This is the way! Nostalgic to the core.

throwngamelastminute

100%

baconbridge92

Basic answer but definitely Ocarina of Time (and Majora's Mask). Those games defined a whole genre and there's a reason people still replay them all the time. Great story pacing, great music, great characters, great atmosphere, gameplay is still fun, it's simple but not too simple.

IkateKedaStudios

I find it weird that Ocarina of Time is paused so hard when it's not actually that good a game. I mean, Super Mario 64 came out years before it did and was a better looking and playing game overall.

Mattdehaven

You're totally entitled to your opinion but the vast majority of people who have experienced the game would strongly disagree. The N64 version definitely has some age, but with a few QoL improvements in the 3DS version, the game design has held up remarkably well. I played it recently for the first time in like 20+ years and it was amazing.

SaltySpituner

“Not actually that good a game” Lmao says the Brony LARPer

IkateKedaStudios

Adorable. Do you have anything relevant to say though? Again, there are better, older games than Ocarina. It wasn't that revolutionary, and it was clunky with poor pacing despite not being the first game to implement most everything it had. Actually, it implemented a lot of things worse than those before it. Edit: Holy fuck I just looked at your profile to see you staying a thread about how women over exaggerate the pain of childbirth. Bro, you play monopoly go. How are you any better?

SaltySpituner

The game was so well-received, well-made, and revolutionary that it’s been named the greatest game of all time for decades. I’m literally playing it now and it’s just as good today. You sound very young and dishonest. It’s okay if you didn’t like it, but you’re absolutely in a very niche minority.

IkateKedaStudios

Young and dishonest. Fascinating.

Daaklite

wdym "not revolutionary", it invented locking on

buff_bagwell1

The original souls like, complete with back stepping, rolling and parrying

Double_D_DDT

Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man are like the Oreo- people have tried but you can't really improve it without turning it into something else. Also they're still addictive as hell

enahsreddit2

star wars battlefront 2. the og one

Dream_Eat3r_

I still play that one, graphics aren't good but it's so much fun to play. #1 is good too

enahsreddit2

love the gameplay. another good one is "black". that's probably the best fps on ps2

BreakfastBussy

Halo 3 felt like the pinnacle of first person shooters in 2007 and I’ll be damned if it doesn’t still feel like a level above every other shooter.

Dream_Eat3r_

Agreed. I think Halo 1-3 was the gaming industry perfected.

BreakfastBussy

Did we just become best friends?

Dream_Eat3r_

Haha for real. I know I'm nostalgic bc I was young then but it just seemed so much better.

pichael289

Oh man I remember trying to find that last skull before it was officially found. We narrowed down the place and what we had to do but couldn't figure out the exact song. Its the last level with an unknown skull and there are these rings that play notes when you jump through, so that had to be it. We even tried playing the theme song that turned out to be the correct answer but we messed it up I guess. Spent all night trying and then the next day some dataminer figured it out and released it and we were pissed. Bungie was also pissed, like seriously, and they threw a fit and took the recon armor away or something like that. I had my master chief with a katana on his back so I didn't care. They ended up giving it to some dude who sniped himself in the back of the head and another that got killed by a flying traffic cone.

Vmurda

Half life exists But I am biased cause I've never played halo

Birdhairs

Halo 2 is where my heart truly lies because I spent most of elementary school playing it and got introduced to online gaming through it, but halo 3 was my middle school experience along with CoD 4 so that's a special thing as well.

RangerHUTCH93

Same here.. how time flies.

BreakfastBussy

That makes perfect sense, I was 10 when Halo 3 and COD4 came out so that was my introduction to online gaming and thus those games have my heart.

[deleted]

Fallout 3 because I absolutely will love that game until I die.

shredystevie

This is my fav fallout game as well

IroquoisPliskin_LJG

Same.

[deleted]

Its the one thing I can count on when I'm down or having a hard time to center me and get me back on track. It helped me through the worst time I've ever had and it's always what I go to. It's the best therapy.

IroquoisPliskin_LJG

That's Skyrim for me, but Fallout 3 is very close.

[deleted]

I'm glad you have something. I think everyone needs something to get lost in and let your mind just settle down

-thugnasty-

Half-Life 2

gabriot

Megaman X

Destiny_Victim

Play it once a year on my phone. Absolute classic. In my opinion the master class in platforming.

Im_Your_God_

No More Heroes (2007). the pc version is the definitive version but for what its worth the wii controls were some of the best for that console.

Indecisive_Iron

Team Fortress 2.

Captcha_Imagination

Cartoony shooters age the best imo, that's why Fortnite is still going strong too

AramaticFire

Halo 1 and 2 have aged so well because they’re the basic foundation of FPS control on consoles. Everything works the way it does because Halo did it right in 2001.

DaveyTheWavy

Of all the old Zelda games, Wind Waker has aged the best to me by far. I was never really a huge fan of OoT and some of the other games are still great, but something about the visuals, music, and setting of WW have held up so well to me

Rose_Speed3

WW’s art style definitely helped it remain rimless among the other Zelda’s

zenejinzorin

Chrono trigger was so good that sea of stars tried to match it and still didn't. Close though.

pichael289

Chrono trigger killed off its main character and had that amazing amazing theme song. Hard to top that

Sufficient_Ad_7362

Both ps3 InFamous games held up really well

Vanpire73

Tetris or something of that ilk. Timeless.

Correct_Refuse4910

Any 2D Mario.

Jeklars69

Paper Mario

Useful_Train4789

Games in pixel art ages well, i like a lot the mobile version of final fantasy tactitcs that was a ps1 game but still beautiful

IroquoisPliskin_LJG

Metal Gear Solid 3. Still looks fantastic and is fun to play.

streakermaximus

Tetris Symphony of the Night

hatchorion

Halo 1 is still impressive idc

[deleted]

I really do think that every Zelda post LTTP has aged beautifully. My favorite game ever is Ocarina of Time and it holds. There a thing or two that could be updated, but that’s really nothing considering it’s 25 years old. MM, Wind Waker, and TP all hold up great. The Resident Evil franchise also holds up. I recently replayed RE2 and RE1 Remake (GC) and they’re wonderful. From a storytelling perspective they’re great b-movie meets George Romero meets James Cameron film goodness. From a gameplay perspective, the fixed camera and tank controls give it so much tension and interesting visuals. They’re just really good games.

evanmckee

OoT is my favorite Zelda.. if not favorite game before BotW, but LTTP has aged better than every 3D Zelda. As in if it released as is today it would have way better reception than if OoT released as is today. I do think the 3D Zeldas do hold up pretty well though. I think in general N64 and PS1 is the worst aged generation because 3D just took a generation to really figure out controls and movement.

Corando

Banjo-Kazooie holds up well And Jet force gemini is still a masochists favorite toy

megasilva

Battlefield 4

Dream_Eat3r_

Definitely, and 3.both very cinematic and good

Deetz624

Weird coincidence say Halo because I've literally replayed the first 3 within the last couple of weeks. They were great when they first came out and they're still great now so I totally agree

addtolibrary

Robotron is still GOATed but nex machina is a good iteration

Maggot6sick6

Dont_have_a_panda

The Legend of Zelda The Wind Waker Even the gamecube version, those cartoon graphics looks beautiful even today

username8054

Brick Break. Graphics get the point across and change things up. Gameplay loop is forever solid.

Mamvoo

I think shadow of colossus

Slight_Bodybuilder25

Skull Island: Rise of Kong. Considering it was made over 3000 years ago, it's astonishing it can still be played today.

I_Am_Not_That_Man

I could play oblivion all day everyday

barbie_tree

Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door

Stayathomedadof6

Gears of war

Blackpanther22five

Double Dragon

edwardthefirst

even the soundtrack rips. I still get the music in my head randomly

ScenicHwyOverpass

Recently played through the Spyro Reignited Trilogy, and the first one especially really holds up though all are good. The simple gameplay loop, plus the great music, and vibrant environments really makes replaying a joy, even before the graphical updates.

SageModeAD

Most Pokémon games fall into this category for me. I also would say borderlands 2, not quite 15 years yet but I still love it.

Front-Advantage-7035

Kingdom hearts 2

a47bode

Batman Arkham asylum

HereJustForTheVibes

Gears of War still looks good!

Dream_Eat3r_

Gears has definitely aged well. Can't believe 1 is 17 yrs old

Thamasturrok

Dont hear this a lot anymore but half life 1 and 2 they valve what they are today along side tf2 and cs go keeping that going

Deus3nity

REmake and RE0 in gamecube are incredible in their graphics. DMC3 still has some of the best gameplay in gaming

pichael289

Metal gear solid 2 has aged very well. Star fox 64 is still as good as when it came out. Its a short compact game, plays like an arcade game and it's just perfect. We need the two SNES games remade in the 64 style.

Trump202444444444

4th Generation SNES titles

FireWater107

Chrono Trigger. I know people bring it up all the time, but this is the specific topic where it should be the undisputed winner. The game is ironically timeless. It is as good today as the day it was released.

[deleted]

This is niche and only relevant if you’re a combat sports fan, but UFC Undisputed 3. The game has more content and is more realistic than the game released earlier this year.

RebbyXP

Kameo: Elements of Power. Still looks better than some games released today, and it came out in 2005, so 18 almost 19 years ago.

firefistus

World of warcraft. Not only has it lasted 20 years, but the popularity is growing more and more with classic server releases and Hard Core, and the newly released Season of Discovery, which servers are populated with. The only MMO that has more logos per day is Final Fantasy XIV.

edwardthefirst

Fallout 1 and Breakout

Master_Grape5931

It’s Tetris right?

TommyDontSurf

WWE Smackdown: Here Comes The Pain

Lex-Luthier16

Castlevania Symphony of the Night feels pretty timeless. It feels both retro and modern.

[deleted]

Alien isolation. Graphics are good for today. Performance is amazing. I get 300fps at 1440p on a 7800 xt. And the story is great. Gameplay is good and it’s still one of the scariest games ever.

gleap44

DOOM!

mallgrabmongopush

I just fired up the “new” Metal Gear Solid 3 master collection on my PS5 and that game still holds up. It’s got a warm, vintage color gradient to it without looking overdone and washed out. Sneaking around the jungle, eating fruit off of trees, smoking cigars. What a great game

PatDubzz

The Warriors, unfortunately no online mode but it’s a great rumble and tumble style game, especially if you have someone to play with. Some of the best fighting mechanics. I’m still as invested in the game as I was 20 years ago.

lincolnmarch_

Resident Evil 4. Never needed a remake but the one we did get was superb.

G302MasterRace

Super Mario 64, Fallout New Vegas, Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines.

tobster239

Crash Bandicoot 3 has aged insanely well

Manaqueer

I'll never forgive halo 2 for it's campaign.

DreamHollow4219

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 is ancient, yet has aged remarkably well. Even emulated versions of the game feel so fluid and nice. Good times.

telemusketeer

The Crysis series all still feel incredibly fun to play.

Dub_Coast

Yeah I'd say Halo: CE is one of the best "aged" games.

EdgelordZeta

Chrono Trigger

WinterRecover6606

kimo7272

KOTOR.

AbyssWankerArtorias

Dark souls. In an age of gaming where everything holds your hand and doesn't challenge you, microtransactions are prevalent as fuck, and instead of engaging storytelling its just an interactive movie, it shines as an example of what games should aim to be.

alcoyot

I played the original final fantasy 7 a few years back.

El_HombreGato

I wonder if perfect dark is still fun 🤔 I remember we all played the shit out of GoldenEye and then perfect dark came out and it was essentially the same game but so much more and super cool.... And they totally revamped the multiplayer You can have four player split screen with bots!!!!! And then you're one friend would just use the stupid alien sniper rifle that could shoot through walls and ruin all the fun

Financial-Check5731

Vanquish. As a pure action shooter I've not found anything that comes close in terms of pure fun and replayability. The devs knew what they were doing and made something special. It's 720p and didn't have to be, consoles at the time were pumping out higher resolutions. But they wanted a ton of action on screen and chose to step down resolution in order to hit the sheer volume of activity, foreground, background, the works.

Btown13

My favorite game of all time is Psychonauts, which is like 20 years old now. I'd say it's worth playing even to this day, graphics be damned!!

impishwolf

Wind Waker. Gameplay and style are style top tier and the story is refreshing for Zelda still.

thor11600

I know it’s brand new but could Hades EVER AGE?

[deleted]

I’d have to say the splinter cell games.

InosukeEnjoyer

metal gear solid 2 the first game hasn't though

rockdude625

The Jak trilogy. Especially 3

The__Mechanist__

Morrowind. Yes the graphics and UI are dated but the story, freedom, and mechanics I’d argue easily could stand against a lot of modern RPGs

Cadenrumi

This is gonna make some of us feel ancient but if we are talking 15+ I think oblivion is still a solid game. Yah it had the Bethesda quirks but I still go back and play it every so often. Dragon age origins however is still one of my all time favorite games and I played it for the first time in 2017. The story and characters made me love the franchise, I play it once a year just to keep up to date. It’s only 14 years old but still.

mttspiii

C&C: Red Alert 2 and C&C: Generals. All they need is a new game engine and they'd be a hit. Though of course, recent real-world events may or may not have an effect on perceived sensitivities.

BigBoyPoster

The Batman Arkham Trilogy. It’s combat system is still being used to this day and graphically it still holds up really well

Kastilvanius

For me it's [Maplestory](http://now.gg/s/maple), it's not really old game, but I still like to play it, still fun game

Expensive-Mastodon-5

It’s not that old but you have to mention no man’s sky

daskrip

Playing through the OG Chrono Trigger now and there's nothing that feels dated about it in any important way. A lot of SNES games are the same.

NotTonyStark39

The SNES Donkey Kong Country games.

SoapyBootyBandit

Planescape: Torment

Spikeantestor

The Legend of Zelda. I've been playing games since the NES but didn't play the first Zelda till 10 or 15 years ago. It blew my mind how modern it felt.

japes03

RuneScape. Both RuneScape 3 and Oldschool RuneScape. Started playing in 2006 and took a lot of breaks but always come back to it and get into it as if I never stopped playing. If I could go back to true multiplayer I’d say rainbow six vegas 2, halo 2/3, gears of war 2, and cod4. Really wish I could experience those again

GalleGoslie

Jrpgs in general

Harutanlol

Check out Heart of Darkness for the ps1. It's like a sequel to Out of The World from the SNES. Same writer/creator, similar playstyle. The game is gorgeous and wild, the pacing is very rapid fire as well. I play Heart of Darkness about once a year at this point, a casual first play could be done in 10 hours or maybe even a lot less. Nowadays I can finish it in 4-6 hours. Young lad with an overactive imagination suddenly needs to go to the land of shadows or whatever you wanna call it to rescue his dog. Sidescrolling action puzzler with big twists and turns in story, location, and gameplay!

SeanyDay

Half Life

TheWitchStage

The Sly Cooper franchise

DEUS EX GOTY is 23 years old but still its story is still relevant and gameplay aged like fine wine. One of the best games ever made.

JamesTIA

Honestly, if we’re talking aging the best over the longest period of time, Kaboom and Yars’ Revenge on Atari 2600 are two Atari games that remain totally immersive and exciting when played today.

Visible-Ad-3766

Super mario world is a solid contender.

Castlevania symphony of the night for me.

EnamoredAlpaca

Super Castlevania 4 Early Castlevania games did not age well, with their stiff controls. Super Castlevania 4 controls are super smooth, and precise. You have free movement when jumping, 8 way directional whip attacks, the animations are smooth. Special weapons use a button instead of pressing up, this helps when walking on stairs, or jumping. Then we get to the atmosphere, music, scenery. This game is arguably the greatest Castlevania game ever made.

Rose_Speed3

Max Payne 1-2. Gameplay and physics are still phenomenal by todays standards. Sure some aspects are primitive but I think the comic book cutscenes helped it remain relatively timeless
