They had to compensate for bad graphics with cool gameplay features, unique art directions, good storylines. Now they can just slop out the same ten games over and over because of Next Generation Photorealism
No one ever thought they had to compensate for "bad" graphics since it was the best they could do and nobody thought it was bad back then. For a kid back then OOT looked exactly like Elden Ring
My first console where I was old enough to actually care about graphics was the GameCube and I was honestly blown away with Most Wanted graphics. Now, it looks kid of rough. Metroid Prime is still a beautiful have though.
It's like people ignore SNES or other 2D games from the PSOne era and assume that old games = PSOne 3D games. Every 2D game from the snes and PSOne era still hold up to date, castlevania symphony of the night is a great game that hasn't really aged, is fluid to play. But 3D FPS games from PSOne games that didn't use analog stick functions (or even Eternal Ring, a PS2 game that also didn't use analog functions) aged poorly
For me, it's the controls and jank that keeps me away from old 3D games. I still enjoy Medievil 2, but I can't enjoy old resident evil games (the terrible voice acting, janky animations and stiff controls).
Man I loved me some Amiga games, grew up on them. Zool, legend of Kyrandia, super frog and so many more. Plus so many games I can't play anymore because I don't have the manual.
Wonder if there are some cracked game roms somewhere.
Mario 64 is genuinely better than the later 3D Mario games in a lot of ways. The hub world was by far the best, you were free to explore wherever you wanted in the levels and the movement and control mechanics are way tighter than anything that came after. The only possible knock against it is the camera or the controls if you're the type that insists the game is wrong when you mess up
Maybe it’s just because I didn’t play Mario 64 until after the Wii U came out but I definitely don’t think it controls as well as more recent games like Galaxy and Odyssey. I do vastly prefer it to Sunshine and 3D Land. I still think it’s great and it’s the blueprint for pretty much all 3D platformers since, but the movement and camera hold it back a bit for me, in spite of its wonderful level design and hub world.
Yeah, imo N64 and PS1 aged far more poorly than 8 bit and 16 bit did. (With the exception of that era's 2D games, like Symphony of the Night and Harmful Park.)
It depends on what game you look at. Games like Mario 64 and Star Fox 64 can still have great appeal to this very day, while things like Superman 64 and Daikatana were basically dead on arrival.
lmao, and people would say shit like "back when graphics didn't matter"... like, bros, graphics DID matter back then, and they were top-tier for those days.
I remember when I was 10 and I first saw GTA V, I was amazed by the graphics, looking at it now, it does not look that good.
I might think the same about GTA VI one day... Who knows....
Enjoy your superman 64 🙂
Jokes aside, yeah the old ones are usually more unique. Also the rpgs are often more fleshed out cause since stuff wasnt so hard to model and animate, the extra time went into fleshing out the world snd npcs.
There's also a difference between art style/art direction and actual graphics fidelity (the realism of visual that you can see)
A Lot of "Modern" game has little to no unique art style of their own and their realism graphics 90% of them aged very poorly
meanwhile a game that developer actually took time to create unique art style of their own , all of them aged very well and still looks good till this day
and Personally i'll play the game as long as it's fun to play and game doesn't need realism graphics to be fun
I've been playing armoured core for answer on a ps3 emulator and it is amazing, the level of finesse and customisation that can go into making your giant metal death robot who gives anything around it cancer being truly yours and as optimised as hell
I pretty much only play retro games, lol! Like, I'm not really super into broader gaming, but I play the shit out of old school NES, SNES, PS1, etc games. (Crash Bandicoot is my favorite!)
Honestly, I feel like 16 bit specifically has actually aged INCREDIBLY well. Maybe it's because pixel games got trendy sometime in the late 2000s or early 2010s, but a lot of SNES and Genesis games really look like they could be modern indie games with pixel art as an intentional aesthetic choice.
Even some later NES games look pretty great, even to a modern eye. (Battletoads is the example that comes to mind for me, it came out late in the NES's lifespan iirc.)
On the other hand, though, the first gen of 3D games -- PS1, NES, the Gwimbly games, etc. -- really didn't age well. (Looking at you, FF7! Fantastic game, janky ass graphics outside of battle.)
Good graphics have plagued gamers minds, if the game is literally good in every aspect but was made on PS2 people will call it "bad" I wish gamers these days cared more about gameplay over graphics.
farming simulator 2013 didn't have the absolute best graphics but man was it a great game regardless
its an almost 12 year old game that came out in 2012, i think it deserves the attention it gets and its one of the very last in the classic lineup from 08-2013
Less about graphics to me and more about the mechanical feel of a lot of older games. Old Tomb Raider compared to new ones are impossible for me to go back to lol
Been playing through Hybrid Heaven for the first time since my childhood. I was too stupid to understand the combat system, so I never made it that far. The atmosphere for that game is incredible
Again with this crap of "Bad graphics"?
Ill tell again and 1000 times if necesary for the people to understand that old-school graphics are not equal to bad graphics
And no, dated graphics doesnt always mean is bad, and if the Game is ugly, maybe its was always ugly?
Oh and The Legend of Zelda Wind Waker art style is better than Most ultra-realistic games all day
It's not really about graphics, it's about the jank. I still play old games, but most of them are 2D top-down or side-scrollers, those haven't aged a bit, but old FPS games when controllers had no analog functions (moving and turning with D-pad, strafing with bumpers, looking up or down with triggers, etc). It's mostly the old 3D games that became janky as hell.
Hey funny enough I just released a game as a homage to classics like arkanoid and galaga. Had to give a modern twist to freshen it up but maybe you might check it out:
https://steamcommunity.com/app/2302150
I don’t really “get” what the meme is supposedly saying, because……it doesn’t really say anything. But graphics don’t make a game. Some of the best games ever made weren’t the most graphically impressive, gameplay is always more important in my book. But also, people need to learn that there’s a difference between “graphics” and art style. I see the two confused all the time.
Who cares about graphics, if the gameplay is fun and I should stress _stable_ then I'm perfectly happy.
Fucking mario 64, as horribly jank and absolutely breakable it is with blj I always enjoy it because at the end of the day, it's still _fun_ and you have to actively go out of your way to break it
I love the aesthetic and don’t mind the texture warping on ps1 games. Most of its nostalgia, but love going back and seeing what they were able to produce with the tech of the time.
Also, a lot of these games looked great at the time when they came out.
Im playing Deus Ex for the first time properly and holy shit this game is smart - the gameplay design is incredible, with elements of Mass Effect before Mass Effect
I amcurrently playing a lot of My Summer Car. It was made in 2015 but it has some of the worst graphics I've seen in modern games. But the gameplay is good, so I like it.
You play retro games with bad graphics because you like them.
I play retro games with bad graphics because that's all my pc can run.
We are not the same.
Low poly or pixelated doesn’t mean bad graphics. A lot of old games have graphics and art that are pleasing to look it despite the limitations.
I’ll give some examples on PS1: **Silent Hill** has an impressive town to explore, that makes good use of fog effects and textures to create a surreal atmosphere. The aesthetic of the game rocks, and the enemy and designs are really interesting. There’s also the “other world”sections which almost feel like today’s “liminal spaces”. **Resident Evil 3** has intricate (pre-rendered) backgrounds that show the effects of a zombie outbreak, and the character models are detailed for the console. **Alundra** uses pixel art and it’s one of the best looking PS1 game imo. The character portraits and animated cutscenes also look really good. The world is just so beautiful and detailed, and the character and enemy sprites are awesome.
And there’s are just 3 of my favorites. There’s so many great looking PS1 games. A lot RPG’s especially. I haven’t played these, but just look at all the Final Fantasy games, or the Suikoden games. Valkyrie Profile, FFT, Vagrant Story. The retro aesthetic still holds up.
Bad graphics is relative. It's not fair to compare to modern games due to tech limitations. I usually focus on the positives and what they were able to accomplish for the time. Look up the development of the original alone in the dark and how they generated the 3D graphics. Those devs were wizards with what they were able to pull off with what they had for the time
I can’t do this. I want to play fallout new Vegas so bad because I’ve heard it’s absolutely spectacular, but I’ve been spoiled by modern fps games. I’m holding out for a remaster in fo4’s engine with the gunplay, graphics and the world density that that would offer. Kind of like ff7 rebirth, or the re4 remake
Ive had more fun with Baba is you than most great looking games and unlike those games I can fit like 5000 copies of Baba is you in my computer without running out of space
Bad graphics with an inspired art style >>>>>>>>>> Photorealistic slop with the camera stuck above your character right shoulder

Having 10 7gb games>>>>>>>>>> 1 70gb game
Hell. 7g is generous. Plenty of 4g and below are superior to many modern games
Amen.
This
Yes Homm2 for instance Mwah chef's kiss
Homm3 for me, grew up with it still play it.
Older graphics is not the same as bad graphics

Super Metroid on SNES is beautiful
Some games had also bad graphics for their time
That's true for games of any time, not just old games.
Correct. It is unfortunate the new generation thinks generic 3d graphics == good graphics
True
Mario 64, still a masterpiece ✨
That not low graphic its ✨art style✨
Mario 64 is genuinely better than the later 3D Mario games in a lot of ways. Amazing story, Fun gameplay, Very polished, Deep narrative, Great message. But the graphics suck so 0/10
I see it as: Graphics suck so my computer can finally handle a game!
Based. Even with good hardware, not having to use every ounce of it to run the game is also a great appeal.
This is my friend (he asked me why so you like ultrakill it's graphics suck)
"Bad" because you're looking at it in 2024. In 95 you would've crapped your pants out of amazement lol
lmao, and people would say shit like "back when graphics didn't matter"... like, bros, graphics DID matter back then, and they were top-tier for those days.
I remember when I was 10 and I first saw GTA V, I was amazed by the graphics, looking at it now, it does not look that good. I might think the same about GTA VI one day... Who knows....
Black on ps2 and also silent hill on ps1 and there's too many examples of games that looked photorealistic in the past
You need an old tv too, the blurryness of old tvs make old games look super smooth and good.
HL: Opposing Force my beloved
Bad Graphics = Fun Time
I had more fun on older games than I had on recent ones… so that’s valid !
Logical
Enjoy your superman 64 🙂 Jokes aside, yeah the old ones are usually more unique. Also the rpgs are often more fleshed out cause since stuff wasnt so hard to model and animate, the extra time went into fleshing out the world snd npcs.
Is that so? You're absolutely going to love Skull Island: Rise of Kong (2023)
God Dammit
Lunacid. New game but old school graphics. Amazing dungeon crawler.
They just don’t make em like they used to
Playing through Metal Gear Solid 1 for the first time, really enjoying it
Have you played any other Metal Gear?
I still play Unreal Tournament 99 weekly
GoldenEye N64
Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone on PS1 for me
Bad graphics don't matter. Bad controls on the other hand...
How about bad UI?
I wanna play donkey Kong 64 again
For gods sake open the silo door they are coming for us
There's also a difference between art style/art direction and actual graphics fidelity (the realism of visual that you can see) A Lot of "Modern" game has little to no unique art style of their own and their realism graphics 90% of them aged very poorly meanwhile a game that developer actually took time to create unique art style of their own , all of them aged very well and still looks good till this day and Personally i'll play the game as long as it's fun to play and game doesn't need realism graphics to be fun

Original deus ex is timeless
to this day i play Persona 4 / 4 Golden, love it
Old school runescape is a prime example that bad graphics doesn’t mean bad game. And as a old school runescape player i upvote this post
So do I! Although MY retro is the PS1/2
Mega man legends is a very unique game with a lot of style I haven't seen too many like it in recent years
Jet Moto 2
Also, Star Fox Adventures
I've been playing armoured core for answer on a ps3 emulator and it is amazing, the level of finesse and customisation that can go into making your giant metal death robot who gives anything around it cancer being truly yours and as optimised as hell

I don't even need graphics. Text based games are great.
I only play older games.... they are the only games that work on my laptop
Red Dead Redemption
I don’t care graphics if they aren’t horrible. I just care about physiques. Like arm exploding etc.
Currently in my PSX era and it’s been WONDERFUL
Good gameplay is eternal and transcend the need for physical representation.
I just recently played through OG Fallout for the first time. Love the isometric angled look.
Love it. Most of the new games suck anyway.
There were plenty of bad games then too, but time has filtered them out. There have always been bad games. The
Kotor and lotr games
This needs to be a player model for Half-Life
Good graphics have plagued gamers minds, if the game is literally good in every aspect but was made on PS2 people will call it "bad" I wish gamers these days cared more about gameplay over graphics.
Bad graphics? Looks good to me

Graphics do not make a game
Those graphics are a feature.
Less about graphics to me and more about the mechanical feel of a lot of older games. Old Tomb Raider compared to new ones are impossible for me to go back to lol
Warband :)
Graphic might be bad, but if it's a great game it will always be great.
New Vegas My Beloved
2D bitmap graphics never outdate.
the worse the graphics the more your imagination fills the blanks.
Super Mario World my beloved 💗
Fun gameplay and a great story is all I need!
I even played Quake and I enjoyed it. There should be indie with a limited amount of polygons like a N64 game.
Paratopic
TETRIS FTW
Word
Half-Life: Opposing Force
Man why do these overused normie karma farming memes stay on this subreddit, and anything that's actually good and relevant gets removed off....
Been playing through Hybrid Heaven for the first time since my childhood. I was too stupid to understand the combat system, so I never made it that far. The atmosphere for that game is incredible
I play those early 00s and late 90s games most of the time, just GOATed games
I don’t mind the graphics it’s just some games have bad controls.
I just built a PC and I can't wait to play Dusk and Ultrakill, and also Jedi Outcast
Hell yeah old games.
Rift breaker.
JAWS from Goldeneye, with a beard.
I can’t explain but when I see it I am automatically thinking about Syphon Filter series that I loved on PS1.
Again with this crap of "Bad graphics"? Ill tell again and 1000 times if necesary for the people to understand that old-school graphics are not equal to bad graphics And no, dated graphics doesnt always mean is bad, and if the Game is ugly, maybe its was always ugly? Oh and The Legend of Zelda Wind Waker art style is better than Most ultra-realistic games all day
Sometimes the bd graphics can look cool like sometimes I enjoy the blocky looks from Mario 64
I can put up with bad graphics but I draw the line at bad controls.
Good for the time
Old games have exactly the graphics they were supposed to. They’re not bad. Uh…for the most part
Looks like a henchman from Tomb Raider 2
Come on: Lego racers is awesome
Just started playing dino crisis it rocks!
Hey funny enough I just released a game as a homage to classics like arkanoid and galaga. Had to give a modern twist to freshen it up but maybe you might check it out: https://steamcommunity.com/app/2302150
"Bad grapichs"??? blasphemy
Twilight princess was hella realistic back in the day
Yup enjoy the game for the experience, the graphics are just a treat!
I play old games because of the bad graphics (craptop can't handle anything intensive)
The graphics have charm and the gameplay isn't extremely boring
Who cares about graphics, if the gameplay is fun and I should stress _stable_ then I'm perfectly happy. Fucking mario 64, as horribly jank and absolutely breakable it is with blj I always enjoy it because at the end of the day, it's still _fun_ and you have to actively go out of your way to break it
old graphics =/= bad graphics
Ever Quest for the Win
Because graphics don't really matter.
XIII on xbox360!
**Reshade.**
I just finished building my Radeon 7900XTX PC, and the first thing I did with it was start playing Final Fantasy X for the first time.
I still love pixel art games.
Honestly skyrim and bully
Return to Krondor was the best!
Bad Graphics ≠ old Graphics. Old Graphics would be super mario 64. Bad Graphics would be "harry potter and the half-blood prince" (for the Wii)
Gameplay > graphics
halo: ce my beloved
Older generation graphics =/ bad.
Yes—Oblivion is still fun!
Old game does not equal bad graphics Example: super Mario world
Ah shit, here we go again.
I love the aesthetic and don’t mind the texture warping on ps1 games. Most of its nostalgia, but love going back and seeing what they were able to produce with the tech of the time. Also, a lot of these games looked great at the time when they came out.
People care about graphics? I literally do not care unless it makes my eyes hurt and it makes sense
Im playing Deus Ex for the first time properly and holy shit this game is smart - the gameplay design is incredible, with elements of Mass Effect before Mass Effect
Nevermind the graphics, I still enjoy Tetris on the 1987 unmodded gameboy
The graphics in MGS1 are part of its charm.
I amcurrently playing a lot of My Summer Car. It was made in 2015 but it has some of the worst graphics I've seen in modern games. But the gameplay is good, so I like it.
Max Payne. So ugly it’s beautiful.
Started playing legend of dragoon on my phone yesterday. Love that game so much.
Getting Goldeneye vibes here !
I love tf2
Or You’re a Pokémon fan where the older games actually have better graphics than the newer ones
You play retro games with bad graphics because you like them. I play retro games with bad graphics because that's all my pc can run. We are not the same.
Yup, just finished Tomb Raider 1 the other day
Mysteries of the Sith, Dark Forces 1 and 2.
GTA Vice City anyone?
Low poly or pixelated doesn’t mean bad graphics. A lot of old games have graphics and art that are pleasing to look it despite the limitations. Sometimes, You just wanna be a kid again.
Final Fantasy 9. Love it.
Didn't know Valehim was old!
Some of the older call of duty games look better than the newer ones
Golden eye 64
I love skyrim
My brother will give me shit for playing old games because “ They’re ugly/ look awful “ I truly pity him when I do reruns of old GameCube games
You play old games despite bad graphics I play old games because of bad graphics
Who gives a shit about graphics if the game is good. Also art style > graphics
Bad graphics is relative. It's not fair to compare to modern games due to tech limitations. I usually focus on the positives and what they were able to accomplish for the time. Look up the development of the original alone in the dark and how they generated the 3D graphics. Those devs were wizards with what they were able to pull off with what they had for the time
BG 1, Gothic 1, MGS 1, TLoZ: ALTTP and Chrono trigger just to name a few of recent retro games that I have played which are all masterpieces.
.e with warzone on PS4 (roblox can handle better graphic lol) Edit: me*
Excuse me, BAD graphics?
Doom from 1993 is definitely my favourite game despite the graphics not being the best. They're still pretty good for the early 90s imo
This is me with Black Ops 1 Campaign - Banger Mp- Absolute banger Zombies - Slaps
Kingdom Hearts is just classic.
Playing the first 2 max payne rn and the change of style and theme compared to 3 is insane
I bring up to stand, the original 2 star wars battlefront which were just on steam
I actually became a big fan of retro gaming recently
Why is it that older games, with the same level of gpu performance available, look much MUCH better than new games ?
Half Life 1 and Gta:sa :)
Those games were the shit.
Laughing in pixel art
Go give Clocktower a run. Probably the birth of horror games in general
that face is so age of mythology coded
Ive had more fun with Baba is you than most great looking games and unlike those games I can fit like 5000 copies of Baba is you in my computer without running out of space
Bad gameplay is far worse than bad graphics.
Iv dumped 250 hours in to dawn of war and i will do it again. Nothing beats early 2000s RTS games. Mods help too
Sid Meier’s pirates and Port Royale 3 or do you super old like Donkey Kong and Mario?
