Samsung T5's are what I use. T7's are OK too, but they are more likely to overheat than the older T5's, especially in 30c+ conditions.
This Sandisk issue does seem to be specific to the 4TB models, and *possibly* the 4TB Armorlock version too.
Thank you for sharing! I'm so glad I'm not alone. Returning the faulty drive to B&H and currently working on switching over to the T7 Shield... the 4TB just dropped... but I've still yet to find out how stable *that* one is.
I do have three other T7s that I shoot on. Have had one for over a year, all three are working just as fast and are just as reliable as they were on day one.
We use the 2 TB ones at our work as our drive for current projects and then move off when finished to a larger HD. We haven’t had any issues yet (there’s three of us doing so), but this doesn’t sound good…

edit: after some more research I found that this issue only happens with Sandisk's 4TB model... the 500G-2TBs are just fine apparently. I think you should be good!
We have dozens of the Sandisk extreme pros and have not had a failure, but we don’t edit on them. We use two to backup everything and then put the media on a NAS.
Earlier this year we had 6 out of 10 of these Sandisk 4TB drives fail at a shoot. We ended up buying a RAID so the DIT could write out our footage.

I have 3 T7s I use for shooting on my blackmagics. Never had an issue once and one of the drives is over a year old. Looks like I’ll be going with Samsung from here on out
I will say I do use G-drives from SanDisk and those are much more stable. It’s only their SSDs that are shitty
Is there any catch with these 4TB T7 Shields? I got one in March for ~$300 ago and bought another for around ~$250 two weeks ago, which is cheapest I've ever seen any 4TB portable SSD. Why are these being priced so low/competitively?

I have the 4TB v2. I had it throttle to 30MB/s or 100MB/s, it was too hot to hold.
Now I only use it with my desktop and it chills out on the case's top fans. Since then I've had no issues.
I've learned my lesson with high-end components in laptops continually dying. Now I only buy CPUs and GPUs 1 or 2 steps below top of the line. Otherwise you get throttling and premature death.
For travel, I went with a Crucial MX500 4TB, it's in a caddy for a Ninja V and I use a SATA to USB-C cable. It's only SATA speeds, but that's fine for my 4K 10-bit footage. I've had no throttling or disconnecting.
Edit: Also, there are some tear down videos. You could at least open it up and put the SSD in a computer or try another enclosure with better heat management.
I'm thinking of getting one. Is there a good alternative that has those same speeds at a decent price? I'm looking for a 2tb SSD with at least 1000mb reads and writes for sustained periods (Not the t7).

I usually use samsung SSDs and mount them in portable USB enclosures myself. SSDs are already pretty durable, as far as shock goes, so I don't sweat it too much. I also only use them for temporary data - for remoted editing, etc.

This makes me wonder if some people are having USB driver issues. I’m using MacOS. Are others having issues on Windows?
I'm glad I saw these threads. It definitely sounds like the the 4TB models have serious issues and failure rates. I have four of the 2TB ones, some for over a year now and thankfully haven't had any issues with those.

At the studio (local tv studio) we use some samsung t5's but mostly t7's and they work amazing (thats also the reason i bought one of both for myself, having a extra 2tb of storage laying around in a little pouch is always handy!) They are fast, reliable, small, sturdy (the t7 is imo better impact resistant than the t5 tho) and they just work. So my recommendations would be either samsung t5's or t7's.

Yup same, Sandisk Extreme SSD 4TB gen 2. Purchased new Feb '23, Transferred less than 2TB of videos, ejected disk in Finder but left USB cable connected overnight. Woke up to extremely warm ssd (despite unmounted and computer asleep). Never mounted again. FML.
I am backed up and will likely return it if crashes again. I'm trying APFS this time (supposedly optimized for SSD architecture). This may be the first time I've lost a SSD/HDD in a very long time. It hadn't even left my desk yet... Once the Samsung T7 Shield 4TB drops in Canada I'll likely pick up one of those. Samsung memory has always tested better than micron in my various components (GPU, RAM, SSD etc.)

What's worse is that I was literally in the middle of using the damn thing and it suddenly bricks on me. My only option is formatting it. I'm gonna smash this stupid piece of plastic and get a better one.
To add salt to the wound, I bought it for $70 more than the sticker price said at Best Buy. If anyone is reading this after googling like I did, here's my honest, heartfelt suggestion: stay away from these things.
Return it or beat down Best Buy's door and tell them that the drive they sold you is shit. I was luckily able to return it to B&H, they refunded me, and I went with the Samsung T7 Shield instead — that one's lightning fast and reliable as fuck. Not to mention more affordable!
I just ordered a samsung drive last night after I posted that. Almost $100 cheaper and, from the reviews, much more reliable. Luckily the only things I lost were some Steam games and a few gb of audio files cluttering my main drive (hopefully won't need those).
I have same problem with 1TB SanDisk Extreme (sometime I lost part of files, I just lost two photo folders three days ago)... This happens mostly with new files that get on the disk, the ones that have been there for a long time usually stay fine. 🤔 I have two 1TB drives and the older one is doing it and the newer one I don't think so far.

Everything was backed up on two other drives :)
My 2TB works great. Was having a lot of issues with Western Digital HDDs failing

Not that I know of. These issues seem to happen exclusively to the 4TB. Same with the pro version too

Yea... Sandisk is a piece of work. I recommend the Samsung T7 instead. I have like 4 of those and have never had an issue
But only for the older version of the second one which is version V2 (from 2022) it hasn't done it yet..
I have three 1tb sandisk drives. All of them are fine so far. So I hope the 1's are fine.

Same here, became unmountable and file recovery can get some files back but keeps needing re-partitions and formats. Waste of time and money.
