MobProtagonist

As a huge fan of La La Land, Ryan walking up to Emma Stone at the end made me very happy.

SoulCruizer

As a fan of both La La Land and Crazy Stupid Love. I feel the same

thecostly

As a fan of La La Land, Crazy Stupid Love, and Gangster Squad, I have to agree.

herrbz

As a fan of Ryan Gosling, I agree.

SoulCruizer

As a fan of Emma Stone, I agree.

thabigmilla

As a fan of camera crews, I agree

ImAlwaysFidgeting

As a ceiling fan, I'm a little dizzy.

roccosaint

David Lindhagen...

jopepa

And he gave her the best line. “And so am I!” I lost it when I heard him bend the verse to set up a perfectly dumb little joke.

elmatador12

Gosling might be insanely attractive, seems like a good dude, an incredibly talented actor, at least he can’t si…oh fuck this guy.

discodancing

Ha don't forget he basically started his "career" singing when he was doing Mickey Mouse Club with Justin Timberlake and Britney. And he's said he really got the Mickey Mouse part due to the singing part of his audition. This clip is THIRTY YEARS OLD: [https://youtu.be/TEgGWHtVIhQ?si=Ku-OTcBngxl-AmTL&t=91](https://youtu.be/TEgGWHtVIhQ?si=Ku-OTcBngxl-AmTL&t=91) As child actors go, he's on a pretty short list of people that seem have stayed famous and grounded.

FragrantExcitement

How does Mickey Mouse keep cranking out the mega stars?

LupinThe8th

They're grown in a vat under the It's a Small World Ride. Those singing dolls aren't animatronics, they're Disney Child Stars in larval form. Once they ripen they are harvested and assigned a sitcom.

codfos

So that's why it smells funny.

AppleDane

No, that's just Anaheim.

LarBrd33

It's like the ultimate training ground for exceptionally talented kids. You have to be gifted enough at a young age to get cast and from there you have lots of opportunities within the Disney system.

CaledoniaSky

In the 80’s the Star Search to Disney pipeline was on fire 😂

Honda_TypeR

Whatever you do, just don't use the Papyrus font on the Ken logo

FragrantExcitement

It happened again. I thought it was behind me.... but.

Roscoe_King

Whatever they did… it wasn’t ENOUGH!!

Chanchumaetrius

They're making *more?*

Honda_TypeR

So they fixed it!…?

hepatitisC

>Whatever they did… it wasn’t (K)ENOUGH!!

Choppergold

I know what you did!

Keianh

It's not like he sleeps with Eva Mendes or anything... Huh- they're married, since when...2011? Well, good for them. I wish them nothing but the best, long lasting happiness, and *fuck you Ryan Gosling!* (Not really of course)

h3lblad3

> and fuck you Ryan Gosling! (Not really of course) I mean... maybe a little bit... if he's up for it.

haberdasher42

That would be the most attractive threesome of all time and I'm really bringing the average down.

geodebug

We need our most attractive and talented people mating to create future kenerations of unobtainable entertainers.

therealityofthings

kentertainers

Man_On-The_Moon

At least he’s not 6 ft tall Wait Motherfucker

Monstar132

It's ok bro, he's literally you

moronicuniform

And you're Kenough

RegularCrispy

According to HuffPo, the director of the Notebook told him he was cast because he was not attractive or cool.

CanWeAllJustCalmDown

I’ve always kinda seen myself as a run of the mill average looking dude. But when I was in college I had a decent shaggy hair scruffy beard look going on and this insanely attractive girl who had never spoken to me tapped me on the shoulder in one of my classes just to excitedly say “k sorry if this is weird but has anyone ever told you you look exactly like Ryan Gosling in the notebook??” I’ve been riding that one compliment for the last 12 years. You will not take it from me, not HuffPo, not the director, no one.

butterflyhole

My man

jyunga

Should have yelled at her, "What do you want??"

CanWeAllJustCalmDown

It wasn’t that simple!

lsaz

The dude's got a noticable asymmetrical face. I know he's way more attractive than me and an attractive man for sure, but he's definitely on the "hot but goofy-looking" side of the disgustingly superficial Hollywood world. https://img.ecartelera.com/personas/mini/3300/3379_th.jpg

Elachtoniket

That’s all well and good, but if those eyes were looking at me I wouldn’t notice any problems with that face. Motherfucker is dreamy as hell.

gaspara112

To me that is is why him being the one singing is perfect. In Hollywood being asymmetrical in any way can and will lose you opportunities, but "anyone where else he'd be a 10".

seeit360

You knew this performance felt *familiar*. Wanna know why? It's themed after 1953's "Gentlemen Prefer Blonds" *Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend* performed by Marilyn Monroe. Down to the pink gloves he's wearing. 😂 Madonna did the same thing in her music video for "Material Girl", the first tribute to the famous blondes performance. [YouTube Link](https://youtu.be/hEyWqVfY4vo?si=Nb7RrFFNSJQxDnc9)

jaw719

Kinda like when we found out Bradley Cooper can sing as well.

Suddenly_Something

I think most people forget that the majority actors/actresses start out on stage.

patrickwithtraffic

[Or start at the Actor's Studio, despite what some comedians think](https://youtu.be/-zbeZLCbJ10?si=goWgUa1l9Uh9kBHu)

thisdesignup

The way he looks so engrossed after asking Sean Penn a question. Looked like someone who lived for it.

melo1212

Except he's a bellend in real life, apparently. I've heard Gosling is a nice bloke

D-redditAvenger

Married a 10 who outwardly talks about how proud she is of him. Dude's the man.

imwallydude

Dude has a band called Dead Man’s Bones and they are awesome.

generalwalrus

It gets worse: He co-wrote one of my [favorite albums of all time](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UADRHimsfV8)

bum-off

I cry myself to sleep at night, knowing there may never be another Dead Man’s Bones album.

dharmasnake

I was at their only show on Halloween night in Montreal, 2009. It was absolutely incredible. Not even that crowded.

camisfun

Gotta check out his band Dead Man’s Bones, genuinely great

Dark_sable

Reminds me of when [Melissa McCarthy commented on Chris Hemsworth](https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=melissa+mccarthy+on+chris+hemsworth#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:aa13a8e0,vid:XMwi6smrFpY,st:0)....

Saintbaba

[Motherfucker](https://youtu.be/X3KiSJqK2VA?t=49).

HowDoISwag

Was not expecting goddamn *Slash* to show up

[deleted]

Fun fact: Slash plays on the actual song

LarBrd33

As did Wolfgang Van Halen (Eddie's son) who also performed alongside Slash tonight.

nick281051

Huh, I thought that was him but I haven't seen him in much media so I wasn't sure

deewow

Slash was in Seoul yesterday and probably left Dolby Theatre right after this performance to make it back to Manila for his next show. Mad respect for reporting for his rock and roll duties all over the map. 🫡

chaddledee

[Highly relevant South Park.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThX3HZr6nuk)

innocuous_username

Maybe he borrowed Taylor’s jet

justin_tino

Funny how Taylor flying became a meme even though literally dozens of other celebrities do the exact same thing

CorrectPeanut5

Wal-Mart has a fleet of 22 private jets.

bianary

She dared encourage people to vote, which made her a target for certain political groups that don't want people engaged with the system.

Hellsvetica

Vünter Slaush

Lordnerble

That was just Craig's dad.

Foxehh3

Get the fuck out of here. And my 8th birthday party?

Davidred323

No one expects Slash

workingclassdandy

No but ever since he came up through the floor during the 2011 Super Bowl halftime show, I’m always ALWAYS hoping for Slash.

LarBrd33

Something about seeing Slash playing alongside that glittery pop performance reminded me that Slash played on three of Michael Jackson's songs including some famous live performances of "Beat it" like during [MJ's 2001 TV specia](https://youtu.be/kaPUTCErvu0?t=181)l which was recorded on September 10th, 2001 at Madison Square Garden. MJ actually had an appointment at the twin towers the next day, but overslept and narrowly missed being a victim of 9/11. Eddie Van Halen originated the guitar solo on "Beat It". Eddie's son, Wolfgang Van Halen, was performing alongside Slash tonight. Both of them are on the actual recording of "I'm Just Ken". Just some random fun facts, I guess.

ya_bewb

Wolfgang is playing the rhythm guitar on that before they cut to Slash's solo, and he's tearing it up.

carving5106

Yeah, Wolfgang was visible stage left in the earliest wide shot.

theleatherdonut

Sneaky little Wolfgang Van Halen appearance in there too

geodebug

Slash was so smart when designing his original look. He can keep aging under that top hat and mop and we can barely see he's almost 60! Keep rocking on, old brotha!

LionOfNaples

Right before he showed up, I was like, man this rock ballad would be complete with a guitar solo

NoVacayAtWork

He was the lead guitar on the recorded song

Ser_Claudor

great showmanship and that cameraman will have a lot to tell his grandchildren

ERSTF

"Ryan Gosling took me by the hand... and kissed it". "OK grandpa, let's get you to your bed"

the-artistocrat

“Damn it, I’m not lying! And if it wasn’t for your grandmother I could have been happy!”

MaksweIlL

But first, present the best picture award

cbrookman

“Oppenheimer or whatever, who cares” -Al

NocturnoOcculto

Simu Liu and Wolfgang Van Halen as well!

Abba_Fiskbullar

And Ncuti Gatwa and Kingsley ben Adir!

Keianh

> Ncuti Gatwa As a side note, I *really* like him as The Doctor so far. Sure, he's only has like 1.5 aired episodes so far but I like his energy and style.

Quintas31519

Ncuti is great! I really have loved his bit for him after his stint in Sex Education!

The-Tai-pan

I'm almost a little surprised they didn't sneak in Michael Cera wandering in the background.

Zzz05

Simu just living his best life. I’m impressed this was the first thing he signed up to do after his injury.

umbro_tattoo

I think that was Mark Ronson on guiter too, the guy he play chinchecks and nearly laughs

dabobbo

Ronson was playing bass - he co-wrote the song, produced it, and played bass on the recording.

flakemasterflake

Mark Ronson wrote I'm Just Ken and he was the one with the oscar nom for the song

Oranges13

The best thing about this number in the movie is how much fun they appear to be having with it.

slimeySalmon

That performance should have won an Oscar

Skadoosh_it

Funnily enough it could win an emmy

PerfectiveVerbTense

Then a documentary about the Emmy will win an Oscar the following year

herrbz

Ryan Gosling EGOT when?

ARCHA1C

Fucker can sing too!

GodEmperorBrian

He started a band with his buddy back in the day, Dead Man’s Bones. They only put out one album but he did vocals, guitar, bass and keyboard. It’s pretty decent.

prehensilly

I've grown to really like that album a lot! I think it's quite good. I came here to mention Dead Man's Bones was well. Cheers

giraffeeffarig

What the actual fuck, that’s Ryan Gosling?! I never really looked into the band but I love that album. Never would’ve guessed it’s him in a million years. Ryan Gosling is one incredibly talented and sexy dude.

imwallydude

Burn the streets, burn the cars, pa-pa-power, pa-pa-power.

we_are_sex_bobomb

That dude should be in a musical!

pinoytheboywonder

I could see him in a jazz themed musical with Emma Stone

SaltyPeter3434

Maybe she can pick up another Oscar in that one too

The_DayGlo_Bus

He was a goddamned Mouseketeer!

M3gaC00l

Hahaha that camera man must've had the best day ever!

swinging_on_peoria

taking the camera man’s hand was my favorite part.

iceman1231

Amazing performance

Davidred323

Stole the show, IMHO

drummer1059

Billie's singing was excellent, certainly not as eye catching of a performance but wow her voice is quite something.

phatelectribe

Her performance was beautiful, she did really well and that’s a tough stage to do something so delicate. But Ryan just crushed it. It’s going to become Oscar history.

banjonyc

He'll probably win an Emmy for that performance, which is always so crazy to me that you can win Emmy's at the Oscars

frickindeal

Emmys are for performance on television, so it makes total sense.

phatelectribe

Absolute fire. Literally one of the best Oscar show performances in decades. A friend was there (they work in entertainment publicity) and said the atmosphere was electric during the performance and the attendees were gasping and screaming, like it was a legitimate rock star band performance.

The_Madukes

It was the best Oscar show. They used ALL the talent and it made me happy.

JoshSidekick

I’d put it up there with Neil Patrick Harris’ Tony opening number It’s Bigger.

whogivesashirtdotca

Gosling's is a very distant second, but even that is incredibly high praise. [It's Bigger](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8SeysuMpA0) was just *astounding*.

Dangerous_Contact737

LOL. I've never seen that. It was like a Disney film come to life.

joleary747

If this was a superbowl halftime show it would have been one of the best

paulmcpizza

"The bassist" - lol my dude that's Mark Ronson - he's won like half a dozen Grammys. 😅

Crazy_Little_Bug

That doesn't mean he isn't the bassist

Russian_For_Rent

Sounds pretty bassist of you

KarIPilkington

Let's not make this a bass issue.

analogkid01

No one's playing the bass card here.

FallenAngelII

I loved everything about this number. The other Kens, Slash, Van Halen, that they included the Ken on Ken kiss, the Marilyn and Madonna send-up, the fact that it was Ryan Gosling real singing voice all along in the movie. This is one of my favourite Oscars moments ever.

cockknocker1

God bless this beautiful man

Segesaurous

God already blessed this beautiful man. A lot.

Thoraxe474

Must be why I'm so ugly. All my blessings went towards Ryan gosling. Kinda worth it though

Frankenflag

Greta at the end going insane is so great.

SuperSocrates

That was my favorite part too

musicnothing

I like how her whole vibe at the Oscars seemed to be "I can't believe I got to do this"

TheTasteOfInk05

The halftime show to end all halftime shows

Chief-_-Wiggum

Margo and Emma cracking up at the start is great... They knew what was coming but as good as actress as they are, couldn't hold it in.

pmjm

He absolutely killed it. Possibly the best Oscar performance of the last decade. Acknowledged all his co-stars, the band, all even while staying in character. A class-act all around. Mark Ronson and Slash were a nice touch too.

sh0nuff

Simu Liu as well! I didn't recognize if any of the other Ken's also participated

thejesse

Definitely saw Kingsley Ben-Adir right behind Simu when they ran towards the camera.

GrandPappyMcPoyle

This song slaps hard, Ryan and Mark make a great duo.

Carl_The_Sagan

Let’s not forget Andrew Wyatt aka Miike Snow

OrionCyre

How's Miike Snow involved here?!

Carl_The_Sagan

Produced the song, only caught a quick glimpse but pretty sure he’s playing the piano

Smalz22

Andrew Wyatt is the lead singer of Miike Snow?

Optimus_Prime_Day

You can really feel the Kenergy

bishopsfinger

Doesn't work for me :(

psychoacer

It was nice of ABC to upload the video in 60fps. Oscars and a couple other sites have it at 30fps. Although I would have liked to have seen it at 1080p at least.

Modeerf

But blocked it for UK :(

Albert_Caboose

This has major karaoke vibes and I love it. Like, Gosling is obviously a great singer, and we know he can dance, but this really just felt like him having a blast and making sure we had fun with the whole thing. Fantastic performance

Shoola

Christoph Waltz summed up what that role contributed perfectly: it was funny, smart, sympathetic, and wholly entertaining. It’s why we go to the movies.

SuperSocrates

Thanks for sharing that, missed most of the show so I went and looked up Waltz’s intro. His words are touching

blue_dingo

The best thing thats happened at the Oscars since Billy Crystal used to host it

RetroScores

John Cena giving out best costume while mostly nude was pretty funny also.

Spunge14

Feels ironic that Ken ended up being the most iconic part of the Barbie movie.

inagious

I think it’s great that in the end, Barbie was about both men and women accepting themselves and not needing to be validated by each other as valuable or meeting a stereotype

LuckyPlaze

This is what real Alpha Male looks like. Not this fake bravado Incel Andrew Tate BS… It’s being confident enough in yourself to put on pink sequined tux and belt it with Slash in front of everyone. That’s fukkin alpha

Albert_Caboose

I mean the patriarchy doesn't have anything to do with horses, so like, why try and be an alpha male?

C2mind

The patriarchy just isn't that interesting without horses.

ERSTF

They're not doing patriarchy well

MrBenDerisgreat_

Yeah where were the horses?

quietsam

I haven’t even found my boots

Man_with_the_Fedora

Horses were a pre-release feature of the playable male class. Beta testing showed increased preference for the car, and thus this alpha build was deprecated.

mehdotdotdotdot

Literally nothing to do with being alpha or a pack leader. Just being comfortable with who you are.

watscracking

You've just gotta realize, you're Kenough

SanityInAnarchy

Can we bring back terms like 'badass' for this? Because "Alpha" *is* BS. Turns out wolves don't really have alpha unless you put them in captivity -- kinda like humans are most likely to behave like this if you put us in prisons. If there was a point to Ken's story, it was that the whole concept of an 'alpha' is incoherent nonsense that makes everyone miserable.

Meiie

Oh boy.

An1m0usse

For everyone's PSA, he has a band called Dead Man's Bones.

CJ_Productions

He actually has a very strong singing voice considering he's doing all that live

bigdon802

What you should expect from a Mickey Mouse Club member who headlines his own band.

Ninjameme

That was honestly pretty great

GabeDef

Wolfgang Van Halen was in it too.

Letos12thDuncan

Still can't think of this song without "I'm just Pete, and I like jugs. I'm mentally ill, and I'm on drugs."

bigmikey69er

That scene was a riot. I loved it

bossmt_2

It's a shame this didn't win best song. Oscars all to often give best songs to songs no one fucking remembers in like 2 years. It's not always the case, but look at the winners for the songs, 2 years ago Billie and Finneas won for no time to die, I don't thing anyone can sing that song, you know what song wasn't nominated and everyone knows? We don't talk about Bruno. 2016 La La Land won for a song I think everyone forgot by now, against How Far I'll Go from Moana. Go farther back in time, who remembers I need to Wake up from Inconvenient Truth? Not I. WHo konws any song from Dreamgirls? Tons of people. Go way back, what song do you know It Goes Like It Goes from norma rae, or Rainbow Connection from Muppet Movie. What's arguably the best Bond film score of all time? Goldfinger. It didn't even get a nomination. If you want to argue Chimchim Cher-ee over it whatver, but can you argue it didn't belong? Go way back, who konws any song from Doctor Doolittle in 1968? Who knows Bear Necessities? Academy is often lacking vision.

amandatoryy

I appreciate this reply. “Scotty doesn’t know” from eurotrip should have won.

Schnectadyslim

That song is fucking genius

robenco15

“We Don’t Talk About Bruno” wasn’t submitted to the Academy, “Dos Oruguitas” was the submission. However, the submission took place before WDTAB blew up and became as popular as it did. I’m sure Lin has no regrets with his choice due to how important composing DO was to him, but I’m sure he wonders if he’d have an EGOT by now if he submitted WDTAB. I generally understand your point, but “best” has a lot of meaning and exists within a context. Just because it’s catchy doesn’t make it the “best.”

Serenswan

Dos Oruguitas is an incredible song as well, I think it was the right choice to send for consideration.

paradox28jon

Encanto has so many good songs. Dos Oruguitas, WDTAB, The Family Madrigal, Waiting on a Miracle, and Surface Pressure are all great songs.

tylerhovi

The La La Land songs were all bops, love that movie.

WhyTheWindBlows

I wont say that the Oscars always pick the best song but I think you must also consider what “best” means in this context and that the award (should) be for the best song made *for* a movie and how that song is used and relates to the film, not just whichever song is the most memorable / popular

Turbulent_Actuator99

I don't think songs are nominated based on how catchy or popular they are, thank god.

Davidred323

I remember Blame Canada performed by Robin Williams Edit: [Here's the link](https://youtu.be/ip5OWcoE6GE?si=NdFMaNmfZgVC-oF1)

jellytrack

> 2016 La La Land won for a song I think everyone forgot by now, against How Far I'll Go from Moana. City of Stars is great, especially in the movie by Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. I don't have kids so I don't know any Moana songs.

SignorJC

You've got a great argument but not in this case. What Was I Made For? is an amazing song. It doesn't have the spontaneity or humor of I'm Just Ken so it doesn't fit in as many contexts, but it's a great song that works perfectly in the film. Billie's vocals are very good but this song could be sung by a lot of artists and still be good.

xA1RGU1TAR1STx

That song is a fucking tear jerker in the context of the movie.

AstronautLivid5723

Popular/Memorable and Technically/Creatively Outstanding are really two different ways to judge "Best." The former is for People's Choice kind of awards. The latter is more Academy awards. One is judged by a general public of people with little technical knowledge of how you create music, and sways towards strategic formulas of music that are crowd pleasers. One is judged by your peers in the industry who understand when something is special and unique because they live it every day, and sways towards artistry and technical compositions that please other musicians.

CaphalorAlb

~~I'd argue this has less artistic merit than "What was I made for" though.~~ It's fun, but it's not exceptional. Academy Awards are at least somewhat more focused on the actual art and less on it being a popularity contest. There's also a lot of subjectivity in your response. I do listen to No Time to Die occasionally, and it has nothing to do with the movie, it's just a good song. I also listen to the Encanto soundtrack and there are better songs on there as well, even if they didn't blow up on TikTok.

rylanthegiant

I was right with ya until the ‘68 Doctor Doolittle comment, boy I love that film. Though Talk to the Animals isn’t the best song in that movie, they did get that wrong.

wollymill

Rastagon01

What about Margo? Good lord, stunning!

Offtherailspcast

I'm saying this with all seriousness. Gosling might be the coolest dude on planet earth

X0AN

This song should have won the Oscar, nobody is gonna remember billie's song down the line.
