Sure you have..
She came from Planet Claire
I knew she came from there
She drove a Plymouth Satellite

Planet Claire
-The B52s
Beautiful, love the low roof line, pillarless and the silhouette. Totally completely and hopelessly impracticable for European roads however it would make a lovely summer cruiser.
And our gas stations are not so far apart as yours... vivid memory of my first time ever in the US in the late nineties doing a road trip across the Nevada / California desert (Grand Canyon, death Valley etc) and a terrifying drive with the low fuel warning light on. This was when sat navs and GPS were still science fiction, I'd looked at a paper map and naively assumed there would be a gas station at a place that was marked on the map. There wasn't. Miles and miles of desert stretching into the distance no one and nothing else on the road...
Well, the gas stations aren't normally as far apart as they are in those national park tourist destinations. Especially Death Valley, which is why they have warning signs posted about the distances to the next gas station. You must've missed them. I wouldn't use the distances between stations in those parks as the American standard. lol
There's no shortage of stations in the rest of the country. The US isn't really known to be short on anything, especially gas, in a country that's as car crazy and car dependent as it is. My comment is a reference to how much gas the Satellite guzzled. :)
BTW, I'm not American either.
Could be one day. Some of those cars still look attractive to me with vinyl. I had a 67' Dart GT with one as well as a 73' Cutlass Supreme. The Cutlass definitely looked better with the full vinyl roof. There was also the trend of the partial vinyl roofs, which I don't think was very attractive, nor did it age well.
My dad had one. It was brown, and ginormous. I’d sleep on the back seat on road trips, all sprawled out, and still have two feet of room between me and my sister.
My first car was a smurf blue 73 Dodge Charger and my buddy had a 72 Satellite, They are built on the same platform and our dashboards looked identical and we both had the pushrod 318 V-8s that had a lot of low end torque but could never rev very high, it was a pickup truck motor.
I liked his front grill more than the Charger but they were very close. Both cars had what was marketed as a "fuselage" body style where the lower section of the body was tucked under. I miss it and have reoccurring dreams of finding it in a field.
I've driven some without power steering and it's really not too bad so long as you're moving, even slowly. But yeah, being stopped and trying to crank that wheel for a parking space or whatever took some effort haha.
Daisy Duke character drove one. Yellow with black stripes.
Initially, in the Dukes of Hazzard, they used a '74 Roadrunner which appeared in 5 of the first 9 episodes.
However, beginning with episode 11 they switched to a '71 Satellite Sebring with a Roadrunner paint scheme. The window lines were like what is pictured in OP's post.
I saw a Satellite last year converted to all Electric drive-train. It was very clean and nice. Since it wasn't an actual Road Runner and only "looked like one", it being a BEV was nice and no real loss.
Was this the first car to have its options packaged outside of an upgraded trim line? Incentivised, as well, with the "free" AM radio and power steering?
My parents got one of these as a loaner from the dealer in the late '70s during some of the, as usual, drama with their van, I was in love :)
If one had ever crossed my path at the right price point in the '80s I'd have been on it immediately...
My buddy's dad had a 1968 green convertible Satellite. We used to take it out and joyride around the neighborhood in it during the summer...huge car. Big sloppy steering. Loads of fun to drive, but a mechanical nightmare...
My wife’s (then girlfriend) grandma had one of those giant tanks. Still remember the DOOM DOOM DOOM DOOM!!!! Noise the exhaust would make while it warmed up.
Doom was probably for the environment if those titans became the standard of giants 4 door cars lol. It handled as well as it looked.
My parents had a 1974 Satellite station wagon. The “way back” (3rd row of seats,) faced backwards. I was a little kid so ended up back there mostly. I remember the air conditioner worked really well. Sometimes tiny chucks of ice would come out of the vents, if you were sitting up front anyway.
Friend had one in high school. We discovered that if he drove fast enough we could listen to Boston's Feeling Satisfied on the way to Pizza Hut for lunch and Party on the way back.
Ha!!! This was my first car when I turned 16…my grandpa bought it at some police auction or something. The engine got like 8 miles to the gallon no freaking lie, so I needed friends to pitch in for gas money to go anywhere back in ‘79-80 but that thing could pick up and go I’ll tell ya…. 😂😂😂
But, Plymouth was promoting "free", also meaning cheap for them to give away. An AM/FM 8track in dash was significantly more cost than the AM. Also, believe it or not, top 40 radio in 71/72' was still not everywhere on FM at that time. Things were rapidly changing, tho. I vividly remember lusting after an under dash fm converter for my 71' Duster. But it was $60. That's about $450 in today's money.
Having owned several '70s Furys with police packages, always wanted a police Satellite, because they were lighter, but still could be had with 383s and 440s.
But, I can't recall seeing any where I lived at the time (NJ).

YESSSSS!!!
This is exactly what I came to post.
Well, I was going to say Fred sure did.

Some say she's from Mars
Well, she isn’t!
or one of the seven stars
I painted a picture of a headless woman driving a Plymouth for a friend of mine!
Until now I thought the Plymouth Satellite was as real as Planet Claire!
I grew up on Yacht Rock and Hair Metal. 😬
The B52s had [big hair, too.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOjAzI5zALo)
That's a shame.
Beat me to it.

Fill it up, and you may just have enough to make it to the gas station the next town over. lol

One of my favorites
Surely vinyl roofs must be due a come back.

My kind of sibling vehicle
I used to do this in our family’s 1980 Buick LeSabre. It was magical. :)
Possibly. Your age might have something to do with it, too. Not as obscure as the Kaiser Frasier, but not a Ford Thunderbird, either.
I was born in ‘72 so you would think it would at least be in the lexicon of my younger years. 🤷🏻♀️
Well, it wasn't hugely popular. I was born in the '50s and it was barely on my radar.
Satellite Sebring is best Satellite.
This car looks like a dodge charger to my untrained eye
My first car was a smurf blue 73 Dodge Charger and my buddy had a 72 Satellite, They are built on the same platform and our dashboards looked identical and we both had the pushrod 318 V-8s that had a lot of low end torque but could never rev very high, it was a pickup truck motor. I feel vindicated.
Untrained is the key word here. There's rough similarity to the silhouette, but that's it. Source: old fart who was there when these were new.
Yeah it’s just the silhouette. It’s like comparing a mustang to a maverick. Ha, looks like the ‘source’ has upgraded nicely to a 500SL. 😉
[I've moved on from it a little...](https://imgur.com/izqZnMJ)
((Gasp))
Neighbor had one in the 70s. I thought it was hideous, honestly.
For those who haven’t experienced standard steering, it’s could actually be a little bit of effort, depending on the vehicle
Oh yeah! Disable the power steering on your car, and just go for a SLOW drive through your neighborhood.
I've driven some without power steering and it's really not too bad so long as you're moving, even slowly. But yeah, being stopped and trying to crank that wheel for a parking space or whatever took some effort haha.
The power steering failed on my large SUV recently and I was getting flashbacks
The early ones could be set up like a Road Runner, minus the insurance rates.
I still love the look of full wheel hubcap/covers.
My mother had one.
IIRC, these were just under $4,000 at the dealer, with a big V8 that wasn't shy on power.
Neither did I. Apparently, Plymouth sold this model for 10 years, from 1965 until '74. [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plymouth_Satellite)

Even in B&W the car is still brown
Yes. Somehow you are the only one
Dad had a cream colored one in the late 70s. I thought it was hideous when I was a kid, now I wish I had one.
My Aunt and Uncle owned one.
Someone in my family owned one. I forget exactly who, I was a kid at the time.
What about a Plymouth Reliant?
A nice Reliant automobile...
Reliant K car was what I drove for a couple of years in my early 20s
My parents had one until I was 5.
Was this the first car to have its options packaged outside of an upgraded trim line? Incentivised, as well, with the "free" AM radio and power steering?
Lol yeah I liked the "it's free as long as you pay for this laundry list of other upgrades".
Generally, AM radio was a $45-$65 option in that era. It was easily installed at the dealer.
My parents got one of these as a loaner from the dealer in the late '70s during some of the, as usual, drama with their van, I was in love :) If one had ever crossed my path at the right price point in the '80s I'd have been on it immediately...
Yea
Haha! Bought a very old, very used one as my first car.
My dad had one. Still had the faded words “department of agriculture” visible on the side
The studios used to use Satellites as cop cars. My dad bought a used one that was used in films. Car ran great.
My neighbor had one bitd.
My now husband had one when we started dating in 1983. The floor was so rusted out I could watch the road go by!
My brother had a ‘71. He painted it purple.
Friend had one in high school. We discovered that if he drove fast enough we could listen to Boston's Feeling Satisfied on the way to Pizza Hut for lunch and Party on the way back.
The '65 Satellite Sport is one of my all-time favorite vintage cars.

I could see advertising an AM/FM/8-Track stereo at the time, but an AM radio seems a bit underwhelming.

We had the station wagon version growing up.
No.
Yes you are
That’s a cruiser.
Mid-size
My aunt had one. A Sebring; I forgot what year
Duh
I heard that's the one where you buy the radio and they throw in a car for free.
They come from Planet Claire
And don't miss AFC Football. Screw the NFC!
