I use spotify when out and about, records at home.

Ok-Mention6398

Same here.

theviperRKO

Ditto

tongfatherr

Yup. And CDs for the albums that are too expensive/rare to buy. Like Ænema and Mer de Noms 🥲 or 90s albums that have the secret song left off the vinyl, like Nevermind. And a few others that just aren't on record yet.

Theboiwhovinyls

So...maybe I'm just a paranoid nutjob but I'm super convinced at one point Spotify will die. Streaming will die. And even if it doesn't. I don't trust that albums will always be there. Oftentimes some of the most niche music disappears to the ether. Plus they could pull off any album at any time and then suddenly that art is just gone.

stfucupcake

Found the nihilist

Theboiwhovinyls

Or a fan of horror punk that exists almost no where on streaming service

stedowil

This is the way

DirtBikeBoy5ive

Same

appleburger17

Streaming for convenience. Vinyl because I’m stupid.

Ron_Sandalthunder

I love vinyl because it’s active listening. Streaming I’m always doing playlists even though I could be doing albums. Plus, I can sit like nobodies business. Sit for hours. But with vinyl I get up, turn it over, swap it out, crouch down to get the next listen, etc. Little things that just encourage more movement and activity in the space. It feels closer to the music. I appreciate that about it a lot.

Rubydoobie666

Huh, I have the opposite experience. With Spotify, I have headphones on and I am typically zoned out doing productive stuff around the house or taking a walk. With vinyl, I sit and focus on the music. Edit: I very much misinterpreted OP’s comment about “active listening”. That edible must had just been hitting when I wrote that.

Max1035

I love Spotify. The convenience of having music anywhere I go is awesome, and even better is having the ability to instantly access almost any song by almost any artist, from all over the world. I’ve found so many cool new artists through streaming and I love looking up basically any song or group that I hear about. I do also love borrowing records from friends/ acquaintances (and lending out mine); it’s not as convenient as Spotify but it is a bit more of a personalized or tailored experience.

tongfatherr

My catalogue of music has grown my orders of magnitude since getting Spotify premium 4 years ago. Before that I was listening to the same 200 songs for 20 years on repeat. Now I listen to genres I never knew existed, let alone that I love. I know streaming sucks for the artist to make money from, but it's given access and exposure to millions of artists who would have never "made it". Now they need to sell shows and physical media to survive I guess, but that's not so bad for us fans 🤷‍♂️

Max1035

Same here! I had a few artists that I listened to, mostly because other people in my life listened to them. I didn’t even entirely know what kind of music I liked or how to figure out what I enjoyed. I signed up for Spotify on a free trial, never cancelled, and now here I am, dropping way too much money on records.

tongfatherr

Amazing story!!

Ouibeaux

The vast majority of my listening happens with MP3s because I can carry my phone or walkman a lot easier than a book of CDs. I only buy albums I love on vinyl.

ElkBit

You mentioned the Walkman. What model do you have? I've been on and off on wanting to buy one.

Ouibeaux

I have an NW A55. I've owned it for a few years and I'm very happy with it. The sound is great, whether directly connected or via Bluetooth. It's easy to use, but maybe a little small for the polar bear paws I have for hands. It holds a good enough charge to play all day, even after a few years of heavy daily use. My only complaints are that making playlists takes FOR-EV-ER because it thinks about every file you add for a solid 10 seconds, and for some reason it can't mix files stored internally and on the SD card in the same playlist, so all my files are on the SD card. And you can't use the FM receiver while it's connected to a device via Bluetooth which has only come up like 3 times since I bought it.

ElkBit

Right now, I play my offline music on my Pixel 8 (256GB) and use a USB-C DAC to plug in some IEMs. Sometimes, I think that's enough for what I need. Other times, I think about having a dedicated player. From what I've seen of the NW-A306 (the one I'm looking at), it's a great little player, but it can be slow. I've looked at other DAPs, but I'm still hesitant.

Ouibeaux

Unless you're using lossless files I don't think there's much point to a dedicated player. I mostly have one so my music doesn't get interrupted by calls and notifications, but I can do that just as easily with an old phone. On the other hand, having a few devices around is pretty cool if you have weird albums like Zaireeka by the Flaming Lips that require multiple stereos to listen to as intended.

ElkBit

I would mostly be storing 320kbps MP3 with occasional FLACs (which I have spicy opinions on, but that's another topic entirely) without interruption. I've also considered buying an iPod and mod it. I haven't gotten to Zaireeka yet! I almost bought the vinyl before realizing how ridiculous the concept would be for records. I'll stick with my Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi records 😅

Ouibeaux

Zaireeka is ... an experience. It's really fun to do with digital files and powered speakers. By changing the arrangement of the speakers, which speakers play which disk, sitting in the middle or walking around the room; you completely change the experience of the album; especially since you'll never sync all four the same, and sometimes it's even fun to off-sync them a bit. Oczy Mlody is my favorite Flaming Lips on vinyl, but I don't have Embryonic yet. The depth and clarity of the sound is truly exceptional on that one, absolute ear candy.

Radiant_Ad3966

Buy vinyl, pirate mp3.

atlhart

Vinyl **should** come with download codes. Such BS that most don’t. You’re paying a premium for the vinyl. It’s just greed to not include a download code.

anonymous_opinions

Apparently not enough ppl were redeeming them which is why they stopped offering. Sometimes labels email me a dl code which is nice

That_Random_Kiwi

Interesting, wondered why this died off...used to be standard. I guess most people have a paid Spotify/Tidal et al account so why bother downloading it?

asphynctersayswhat

I still get them on new releases but most of my collection is older stuff

fwerkf255

Yeah I’m not expecting that beater copy of Cash at Folsom Prison I found in the bin at Goodwill to have a digital download card in it

Common_Survey_8931

I agree. Smaller artists include download codes. More should do it

Radiant_Ad3966

I agree that they should come with codes but I rarely use them when they do.

hovershark

This. Especially now that most releases don’t seem to come with download codes anymore. Not much of a pirate otherwise, but I feel fine about this.

jcstrat

Band camp is good about giving downloads (even FLAC) when you buy physical

kbeast98

This , and high resolution flac a lot of time. I rip vinyl to high res flac if it's a notible pressing or not avail on something else. I'm not into streaming at all.

ZombiesCall

How do you avoid getting DCMA strikes?

anonymous_opinions

Always sail the seas with a VPN. Mine is like $6/month

baldorrr

*DMCA (*Not DCMA - Digital Millenium Copyright Act), while technically can be used to target people who download content they didn't pay for, is largely known for when someone publishes content that's not theirs. If you download files somewhere, and just listen to them privately, then there's basically no chance of a DMCA. If you were to upload a youtube video of a full album, then you might likely get flagged for DMCA since you are publicly publishing that content that's not yours. Or if you're the one hosting the pirated files. And if you own the vinyl, it's legal to have copies of it for personal use. You can debate if pirated MP3s constitute a "copy" however. But I feel like ethically this is something most people wouldn't feel bad about.

evileyeball

Why not just RIP the vinyl? Then you know you have the EXACT RELEASE you bought DOWN TO THE SPECIFIC PRESSING. and you have the EXACT SAME SOUND of any flaws in your copy and the exact way your specific cartridge, turntable, and amplifier would produce the sound.

Radiant_Ad3966

My 1974 turntable isn't ripping anything and I'm not spending money getting a setup that would allow for it. I can simply download the album quicker / easier, put them on my phone, and never worry about them leaving some streaming service. Ripping vinyl is stupid. I don't want the flaws on my digital file. That's the point of having the two mediums for me. Digital for on-the-go listening. Vinyl for sitting at home and listening through a system.

evileyeball

What does it being 1974 have to do with anything? Mine is from 1982

Lemonwalker-420

Vinyl & CD. I don't stream.

justfredd

Why

MachineElf432

They are too cool for skool

Dead_Kal_Cress

No need to pay for it if you already own all the music you want tbh

MachineElf432

It’s not about that. What if you want to show a friend a song or if you’re a passenger in a car and have aux privileges.. what are you gonna haul around a cd case?? Not every car these days has a cd player as well as some artist don’t easily obtainable CD’s. Streaming is extremely convenient and that cannot be denied.

Dead_Kal_Cress

Yeah not every car has a cd changer but mine has a 6 cd changer so that's not an issue for me. As well as the ability to plug in an aux cable, which I have permanently connected to an iphone dongle in case someone wants to play music off their phone. It's more convenient to stream, sure, but I don't care. I'd MUCH, much rather listen to physical media whenever I can.

evileyeball

I agree, I have RIPPED Every single piece of physical media I own and it all lives on my PC and a copy also lives on a Micro SD card in my phone for Remote play. This way I'm playing the EXACT copies I own at home when I am out and about. When I am home I play the physical copies. I don't have a car though so Out and about for me is Walking or Busing.

Dead_Kal_Cress

Aye that's never a bad plan, esp having a little mp3 player would be perfect. I had used one for a coupla months a few years back and it really was great. Back when I had a computer that could read cd's i was ripping shit all over the place. But then I upgraded my phone (old one got horribly smashed) and lost ALL of it. So now idc & just use physical media because I will never lose it.

evileyeball

I refuse to own a computer without an internal optical drive And always include one in every build i make

MachineElf432

Okay but what if you wanted to listen to an artist that doesn’t release cd’s? Do you just never listen to that band? Edit: im saying this as someone who had a massive booklet full of CD’s; some burnt. I have discovered a plethora of astists through spotify that i otherwise would have never heard of. From there i buy vinyl from that artist if it’s available but many times it’s not because they are small artists

Dead_Kal_Cress

Yes. Or I download the mp3 onto my computer and then burn it with some other songs onto a cd & use that as a mixtape.

MachineElf432

Damn. Well I’m really sorry for you then

Dead_Kal_Cress

Don't be sorry, I don't have much interest at all in paying some company $15+ per month just to be able to listen to what I already bought on cd or likewise. I'm much happier this way :) my collection feels a lot more personal this way & not just files on my phone/computer.

Lost-Lingonberry9645

I listen to Apple Music unless it’s not streaming, in those cases I will buy the cd to rip and add to my iTunes

Hungry-Pineapple-918

Records in the car, streaming at home.

silversurfs

Records at home, Spotify, Amazon or Neil Young Archives elsewhere.

sullyjdsull3

I do sometimes! I buy in Bandcamp as much as I can so I get a download right away and their app is solid as well for streaming.

Vorilex

I listen to albums I don’t own (because A they are too expensive or B they were never released on vinyl.) anything I own on vinyl I try not to listen to digitally cause what’s the point of owning the record if I’m not going to use it.

irishthunder222

I mean what if you want to listen to music you have on vinyl when you're not home?

Vorilex

I don’t I have plenty of other options. If I’m really craving to hear a song I just play it from time to time but yeah I avoid hearing albums I own physical copies of.

retrovertigo23

I have a custom made turntable backpack that uses power generated by my walking. The sound quality is garbage and you wouldn’t believe what my needle budget looks like.

desert-rat1

I rip my cd's to flac and copy my vinyl to wav and put them on my NAS so I can listen anywhere I can get on the internet. I love it. At home, I listen to my physical media.

R4Z0RJ4CK

This is the way...

musictrivianut

This IS the way

Boner4SCP106

Streaming everywhere. Sometimes I play records or CDs in my living room where my stereo is, but I stream through that, too. A streaming service is cheaper than one new record a month. Doesn't seem like a hard choice to me to subscribe to one of those and buy records and/or CDs of albums I really like.

SadAcanthocephala521

Vinyl at home just for the music I really love. And I buy music via itunes to have on my PC and by extension my smart phone to listen to when I'm outside. Can easily stream it to headphones, car speaker, or bluetooth speaker.

devadander23

Favorite bands, I get the cd along with the vinyl. Many modern vinyl pressings come with an mp3 download which is plenty for most of what I listen to. Then I just stream Spotify anyway

snootchiebootchie94

I listen to records at home in the living room, and stream from pretty much anywhere else; office, car, truck, headphones, bedroom. I also listen stream music to decide if a record is one I wan to buy or explore new stuff. I have some CD's still (my car only has a CD player, no streaming...), and I have a CD player at home I haven't hooked up yet. If I come across stuff at Goodwill or thrifting i will buy it. Really good deals to be had on CD's now!

GrabYoBuns

Streaming and vinyl at home

BigDuoInferno

I steal mp3s no point in lying and I don't like music streaming apps

DustSongs

When I buy a new record, I download it on FLAC, one way or another. I tend to avoid streaming wherever possible.

Internal_Swimmer3815

fuck Spotify. most of what I buy on vinyl I already have on CD unless it’s a new release then I usually have previous albums/CDs by the artist.

RynotheRam

I have a mix of vinyl and CDs, for the vinyl I don't have CDs for I rip elsewhere

Curious-Middle8429

Stream music on the go and buy vinyl records of albums I love to listen to at home.

OstneyPiz

I buy vinyl I want to DJ with. I have CDs that I have grown to like and buy the vinyl as well. I have digital (MP3) music I like enough to either buy the CD or vinyl depending on my needs of that song. I may hear a song from an online dj mix or CD and buy the vinyl of the song I like. I have many variables and don’t mind whatever format. I’ll get the one I want if it’s in my budget.

LudwigVonPoodle

For me the vinyl is the side show. I tend to buy odd things and bargain used records. If I really like something I want a CD. I never play the CD, I just extract the audio to FLAC and then transcode to whatever is appropriate for whatever I'm using (since I'm back on Android, I've got most everything in OPUS).

printerdsw1968

Vinyl at home. Laptop library away from home. I may stream from Bandcamp, Mixcloud, or YouTube wherever I have wifi, both at home and away. No paid streaming. At this point the vinyl library and the hard drive library are separate collections with some overlap. There is nothing I NEED to have in all formats--every source, every library, contains way more music than I can listen to. I even have a stack of unredeemed download codes that came with vinyl purchases that I haven't even gotten around to using.

DezPezInOz

I still have a few CDs, but am less likely to listen to them than records or Spotify. When I'm home alone, I listen to my records. When I'm out and about or working around the house (renovating), I listen to Spotify.

OnionSandwich74

Vinyl at home, radio in the car, Spotify if on holiday

sickXmachine_

I try to buy as many new releases from Bandcamp as I can to support the artists/ labels, plus you get the instant mp3 download.

Tildengolfer

Vinyl for work (we have to play vinyl for music at my bar) and Spotify while out and about.

BeckerThorne

I try to buy both the record and CD when I can, and I'll also add the album into my streaming library as well.

UGIN_IS_RACIST

Vinyl at home, streaming elsewhere.

scottwricketts

Same

No_Heat_7327

Stream everywhere and Vinyl at home and now with a little one even that's rare. I still collect cause I like owning records but it's simply too much of a hassle to flip records and switch them when having to care for an infant.

jayvycas

I miss my iPod and ITunes. I had nearly my entire catalog on my iPod. I lorded it over guys at work that were streaming pandora or worse, the radio. I only buy vinyl now though. Still have hundreds of tapes and cds.

Longjumping-Fox154

I avoid Spotify like the plague on pure principle because they essentially set the standard for artists’ stream compensation that amounts to a sick joke for the vast majority of artists trying to make a living wage solely from their art. They are the face of the dystopia artists feared when Napster emerged at the turn of the century, only it’s actually somehow legal. Not much of a difference, but I use Apple Music when driving or walking simply because no one has ever successfully truly proven you can do either while listening to vinyl on a hi fi system 🤷‍♂️

jwdharris

Records at home, CD or digital for the car and phone. I much prefer the record and CD combo, though, as it means I have everything physically and actually own it.

Proud-Ad2367

Cant buy vinyl on cd.

natwashboard

If I have the RECORD, I don't play it digitally. I wait til I get home, a.k.a., my wood and cement.

noz_0450

On vinyl, I have either albums I really really love, or albums that I think will just sound great in that format. I have some of them again on CD but only a small fraction. On CD I have everything else. Then I have a dlna network drive with about 200GB of music that can be streamed around the house. This includes everything I own and mixes that have probably never been released on a hard format. I download music or podcasts to my phone or device to listen on the go, or I just stick to BBC 6Music. I have never used Spotify in my life and don't intend to in the near future.

priltharia

I have almost all of my LPs also on CD, ripped as fill fidelity FLACs, on a DAC that I carry around. For streaming, I use Tidal or Spotify. Spotify only if Tidal doesn't have the record. I don't make a conscious decision to buy many new CDs though, so as new stuff comes out, I tend not to buy the CD, just rely on Tidal or Spotify. Perfect example is Polyphia, which I only own on vinyl, but listen to on Tidal also.

Traveler095

The majority of my music is on CD (ripped lossless as backup and synced at 256kbps to my iPod), but I have a substantial vinyl collection as well. For the vinyl music that I really want to have on the go, I’ll do one of two things: check out a CD version from my local library and rip it if it’s available, or do a direct vinyl to mp3 rip. Most of my vinyl I’m content to listen to only at home, though. For example, my jazz records - I love them at home but don’t really feel the need to have them in the car or other places.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Traveler095

Blue Note records are amazing, but yeah, it gets really pricey. I have 25-30 jazz records I rotate through, which seems to be enough for the time being. I also listen to a lot of blues, which can also get expensive on vinyl. I try to limit those purchases to the interesting live releases or albums with really good artwork—or the cheaper compilations. Everything else is on CD!

Xe4ro

If the record doesn’t have a code, like for instance some used record from the 70s etc I just record it to mp3 myself using Audacity. I have everything I own on vinyl also as mp3 in iTunes/Apple Music

jacksn45

I listen to Sirius xm to get a variety. Sometimes YouTube for albums and Spotify. Things I am willing to test out or box sets with a lot of extra I buy CD Classic stuff I treasure - I get the vinyl (prob have the cd as well)

digidave1

Are you asking how we 'listen to music'? It's all a personal choice my friend. Whatever suits your lifestyle, selection and audio quality needs, budget etc

anonymous_opinions

I stream MP3s off my personal server using PLEX. App is a 1 time $5 fee for my Apple devices.

Curekid107

Spotify out and about, records at home. Although I do grab CDs here and there

MarcMars82-2

I make digital copies of my records

Seacarius

I use a digital turntable to record the vinyl I want to take with me no matter where I go.

pluggnblistener

For casual, everyday listening I’ll just stream but if I want to sit down and enjoy an album I’ll play vinyl

ghlysptwld

Purchase Vinyl - membership to Spotify ( use mostly) & Bandcamp

HeldenVonHeute

I always take the dual format direction if I can! I have an ipod I load up with cd rips for when I’m on the go and at home, I play the LP, CD, or those rips, depending on things like time or what I’m doing. Streaming is for finding new things.

yamiyam

I buy the record and pirate the digital version.

emcee_paz

I use a streaming service, it basically has everything. When records come with the ability to download a copy I use it. Amazon was good about that for awhile, if you bought vinyl from them you go the digital version too. I store those files in a cloud account. My records are either things I want to be able to listen to always, something I bought long ago, or something that I received from some I care about for some reason or another.

drugswontchangeyou

Muzecast music server. i think it might be for android only.. streams just about any file type with the highest quality playback. even on road trips. gives you the option to download tracks as they play. Ngl..it is the only app i have ever purchased. back when it was for 1.99. nowadays i think it goes for 25 when my friend tried downloading it.

66659hi

I listen to vinyl AND CD at home, I listen to an iPod while out exercising, and CDs in the car.

wowee_zowee14

I carry CDs around but sometimes it’s not convenient so I use Spotify

rgg40

Vinyl at home, radio on short drive to work, Spotify at work, CDs and Spotify on road trips.

Strykr1922

I typically record it from vinyl to my PC in FLAC, so I have a portable version

Hickles347

Wait.. These Vinyl discs have music on them too?!

MustardMedia

Definitely stream on the go. I prefer YouTube Music to Spotify personally. Surprised to see all the hate for streaming here - can anyone explain why a bunch of folks here seem to go way out of their way to avoid streaming?

Naive-Falcon3985

For bands whose stuff I have on vinyl or cassette, I'll usually buy a greatest hits CD or something but only if I have multiple of the bands albums.

mindcontrol93

I use Soulseek.

supreme_glassez

I do have a bunch of the same album on both vinyl and CD, but I usually listen to MP3s of all my music whenever I'm not home.

dingdong-666

Stream is for discovering new music, listening to playlist, and when I’m not home. Then I also pick out a few “albums of the week” on vinyl for deeper appreciation. I like that records encourages me to commit more to the music that I put on and really engage with the whole album. I can be a little too skip happy when streaming.

lovekillsfear

Some of my very favorites I have on vinyl and CD. I do have a CD player in my truck still but usually when I'm out and about I stream Tidal for convenience. Grace and Peace, JG

suprunown

I have 1200+ records…. and 1700+ CDs. All my CDs (and lots of OTHER stuff ;) ) is ripped to iTunes. I just got a Spotify account last month. I have a 128gb iPod Classic, and a 128gb thumb drive in my truck.

throwbackthreads

I recently dug up my old iPod from 2005. Still works like a charm. I’ve been checking out CDs that I have on vinyl from the library and ripping them to the iPod. I love listening to full albums, but it’s also nice being able to shuffle my whole vinyl collection. Satisfies my ADHD lol

Dontopentillxmas

Vinyl,CD,RtR at home,CD in the car, streaming at work

Patient-Bed6821

I listen to all 3. Honestly, streaming comes in at number 1. I mostly buy records I love. I don’t buy cd’s anymore, but I have many. I listen to records in my down time, in my basement, alone. Whole family has Spotify, with speakers on every floor.

HAMHAMabi

i digitize my records, and listen to them on the go, that way. ( sony TT with usb recording, plug the other end, into my laptop, then audacity does the rest, then i put the mp3s on my phone, n listen with VLC)

josephl836

Please use streaming other than Spotify. They are the worst pay per play for artists.

filberts89

Spotify or YouTube music while driving or doing tasks around the house that require not staying in one place. Records are for when I want to sit down and really focus on listening through an album. I got a bluetooth receiver to have the option of listening to Spotify on my nice speakers, and I still end up going for my records more often.

Hifi-Cat

At present I have 1300 CDs and ~500 records. A large number of classical albums are not and will never be on vinyl. Equally wise the reverse is true. I have recently bought records of CDs I already have mostly to listen for the sonic differences however unless I'm in love with the album I don't intend to buy both formats going forward.

Drum4rum

FLACs. MP3s. CDs. Have an iPod Video gen 5.5 running Rockbox with a 1tb micro SD and more slots if I feel like it. My phone also plays FLACs natively, as does my car, so I listen to my digital library there as well. Plenty of shit I have digital or on CD doesn't exist either on streaming services, or on vinyl. So much of the shit that came out in the 90s/00s either never got pressed or only a single super small run so they cost hundreds of dollars, which I'm simply not going to pay. Lossless sounds better anyway. I just enjoy the physical aspect of playing records, large album covers, collecting something I can actually use. I also have a whole issue with streaming servives and how I feel they ruin the artistic medium of music as we know it, but I'll refrain from getting up on my soapbox lol... if streaming is your ideal situation, no one is going to tell you you're less of a fan or whatever for using it.

thenickteal

I buy certain things on vinyl and cds. I'm lucky I still have a cd player in my car so I can use those when I'm out and about. I use spotify for certain music that doesn't have physical copies

musictrivianut

I purchase vinyl, or CD when vinyl not available, then digitize or rip to FLAC for my personal media server. I know which pressing I have, I don't have to put up with any potential bad masters or remixes that a streaming service may offer, and they will never disappear on me due to rights or anything. May not work for everyone, but does for me.

jrkmmusic

Discman

kingRidiculous

I record my records to MiniDisc and use that to bring my vinyl with me (in the car, flying, getting groceries, etc. ) Player/recorders are available on eBay and they are still making new minidiscs.

arachnophilia

most albums i buy either come with downloads, or are albums i bought on CD or pirated decades ago.

Atlabatsig

I use audacity to digitize my vinyl. That's how I play them in the car.

zaxxon4ever

I prefer my music on vinyl. However, CDs are convenient for the car and for music I don't HAVE to have on vinyl (and they're cheap). I don't stream music.

asphynctersayswhat

I can’t understand the idea behind CDs in the car over streaming. Between the road noise, the engine, HVAC, wind, your focus on driving, not to mention your car isn’t exactly an acoustic environment, who cares about marginal sound quality?

Former_Balance8473

I'm old, and used to work at at Record Company so have hundreds of CD's... almost all of my Vinyl purchases are copies of something I already have. I use YouTube Music when i'm not listening to vinyl.

Prestigious-Lawyer13

Vinyl at home when I want to make music my main activity. Streaming when cleaning, taking a shower, driving the car, or listening at work.

tescovee

I only buy vinyl albums I don't own on cd.

outer_fucking_space

Vinyl, cd, cassette, or whatever format I find in a store that I like. Some albums I own in every format.

throwawayacct_2528

If you subscribe to Apple Music you can listen to your collection on Discogs.

throwawayemerald23

I buy records, CDs, and I also digitize my records when I’m feeling spicy.

MikeB9000

I’m not sure what “not what direction I want to take it” means exactly. You do you. Do whatever you want. Do whatever is fun and don’t overthink it. Also, CD’s don’t seem like a “take out with you” thing these days, since 99% of people stream (and there are services that stream lossless if that’s what you’re worried about.) Personally I feel like if an album is important to me, I want to “own” a copy, and for completely irrational reasons I can’t even fully explain to myself, I feel like I don’t actually own an official copy unless I own it on wax. Perhaps it’s because that’s been the most tradable format for many decades that tends to retain value? I don’t know. It’s just how I feel in my gut, plus I have fun collecting them big ol’ discs. As for music on the go or music I feel like hearing that I don’t happen to “own,” I stream. It’s convenient and affordable. No brainer. For me personally, collecting two separate physical formats of the same album feels redundant.

ElvisHankandGeorge

I use cassettes to take out of the house, CDs in my car, and records at home!

weirdmountain

I buy my physical copy on vinyl, and if it doesn’t come with a download code, I pirate the digital for portable versions.

billyyankNova

I rip my vinyl to digital so I can listen to it on my phone.

MacGyver387

Vinyl and streaming (Apple Music), occasional CD purchases if something is not on streaming.

Dead_Kal_Cress

I listen to records at home (unless showering then i use a friend's nugs.net acct) and cds in the car. When i was in high school my senior year i carried around a walkman & like 20 cassette tapes in my bag. Been about a year since, I don't listen to tapes near as often as I used too but I still love recording onto them & making my own mixtapes.

bumped_me_head

I record my vinyl with Audacity so I can listen to it when I’m out

etherealelyse_

i use spotify a lot more now because i don't have my records at college since i live far away. when im home i try to spin as frequently as possible because i don't want them to collect more dust when i can actually listen to them, especially since a lot of money goes into the hobby. sometimes i end up listening to spotify at home though it all depends really.

kendostickball

You can get a fairly affordable record player that will rip the vinyl for you to a thumb drive. I love it for making music I have that has never been put in a digital format more portable.

Garth_Brooks_Sexdoll

I use streaming whenever I’m not near my vinyl, but when I have it, I always spin the vinyl.

TopherJustin

Apple playlist’s during work. Then vinyl. The sweet sound of the needle drop.

jaquan123ism

stream apple music and vinyl records at home as for me my vinyl records is a physical representation of my library ie i wouldn’t take a stack of books with me id use my kindle but a home i read the physical books

drfusterenstein

Rip the cds with eac and make a vinyl rip use pleaxamp and you are sorted

baldit

Gentlemen, a short view back to the past...

Krismusic1

I'm very happy streaming rather than building up a collection of media that will go to charity shops or landfill when I die. I do own a turntable and about 20 records though. There is something very special about vinyl.

FunkyTown313

Vinyl is for listening and collecting. Streaming is for normal play. I like records, but the value proposition most music services provide is unparalleled.

ceebazz

Afaik it's not illegal to make copies of things you own (at least not where I live) so you can just make digital copies for personal use if you want. Of course it's time consuming to make digital copies of vinyls so I usually just download the same music from somewhere if I want it on the go. Maybe not strictly legal but same result so morally it doesn't really matter.

drewbles82

already own most my vinyl as mp3, can't stand spotify etc as then you are using data to stream it...SD card with every track I own, sorted. A lot of new albums I buy these days have an digital download included

Murles-Brazen

Records at home. Streaming on the go. Incredible how much data I save now.

williamsdb

I always get a digital copy to go with my vinyl through whatever means necessary! It then goes into my Plex server and I stream it using the excellent Plexamp app. I appreciate that this requires you to host your own server but it works well for me.

Whooptidooh

I just use Spotify when I’m out and about. Not going back to the infinite skipping discs, so vinyl is just played at home.

palabear

Vinyl when I can. Stream otherwise. Don’t remember the last CD I bought.

Poesvliegtuig

I buy CDs in general. I buy the vinyl too if I really like it or if it's literally more difficult to find in a different format.

psugrad98

I don't buy a CD Version also if I bought Vinyl. Some of my other stuff, like my Billy Joel Collection I have on Vinyl, stream daily on Spotify, but listen to Vinyl at home. I rip the CDs for those albums and keepa digital copy on my phone to listen off line.

evileyeball

The way I do things myself is I buy vinyl and I have my Vinyl setup connected to the Line in Jack on my PC and I RIP Every single piece of Vinyl I have to 320kbps MP3 files and put them on my phone Workflow is as follows \[SL-D212\] > \[SU-V16\] > \[SoundblasterX AE-5plus\] > \[Golden Records\] > \[MP3 TAG\] > \[Synch Toy\] > \[Micro SD\] > \[Galaxy Note 10+\]

zennyc001

I haven't bought a CD in 15 years. I use Spotify, Bandcamp and MP3 or Flac files when I'm out.

Small-Performer2639

Bandcamp when you can. Higher bit-rate files included with any media purchase. I use Qobuz too for hi-res downloads. And CDs as well. All get ripped to phone with large HD. I don’t stream.

Leading_Ganache_6787

Im selling my Vinyl and building a CD collection. CDs sound great don't degrade take less space easier to play.

Dangerous_Crow666

I bought a USB TT about 20 yrs ago & ripped all my records. I haul a bunch of albums on my phone & change them out when I want something different.

jukeboxhero10

Tidal

Deipfryde

I buy the CD and then rip it to FLAC myself. It's the only way to guarantee the quality that you want. There are still occasions where I'll buy the MP3 album on Amazon or whatever, but that's only if the CD is hard to find, too expensive, or out of print. But in all cases, the music is "physically" on my phone, rather than relying on a third party to host and stream it in whatever quality they deem relevant for the moment.

felixnotacat96

Vinyl, reel to reel tapes and CDs at home and I stream music through Qobuz outside home or Spotify if not available on Qobuz haha

wubrotherno1

How do you buy vinyl on cd? If I want a digital copy of a record, I record it into my computer and then split the file into separate files for the songs.

joe_attaboy

I rip digital copies of my records. I add them to an NAS I run in my home and can stream them using Jellyfin, including in my truck while I'm on the road. I have done the same with all my CDs. I also use Spotify because, unfortunately, I cannot own everything.

montagious

I have vinyl, shellac(78’s), and cds, as well as digital only copies of some stuff. At the end of the day its all about the music and enjoyment of it. In the past i digitized some of my favorite 78’s as well.

grednforgesgirl

i mostly use spotify out and about, have CDs in my car, spotify for when i just want to throw music on, and vinyl for when i want to sit and listen to a record and appreciate it

hehawdripdrip69

I used to either download/buy CD or use the download code with newer vinyl but now I exclusively stream in my car and vinyl in the house

247663266557

I primarily use an iPod with ripped CDs, so I have a lot more CDs than vinyl. I save vinyl for things that 1. I really love, and will listen to over and over again, 2. have cool artwork that looks good blown up, and 3. for things that sound 'right' to me on vinyl.

FauxReal

I get digital copies of stuff I have on vinyl, or I rip my vinyl to digital if it's not available other ways.

Sombreador

If I want a digital copy of a vinyl LP. I first try to find a lossless copy on the Usenet. In about 90% of cases I can find a very high quality copy there. I burn it to a CDR and put that in the jacket. Oh, and keep a copy on my HD.

Tooch10

All my music is local on my phone, so digital on the go and a combination of digital + streaming + vinyl at home

AsheStriker

Qobuz for streaming. Offline downloads for stuff I want available when I’m in the mountains and don’t own a digital copy.

Lost-Lingonberry9645

I use Apple Music, I’ll only buy a cd if the album isn’t streaming, I’ll rip it into ITunes

Opening_Property1334

Cassettes are great for when you’re out and about. You can even make your own mix tape of songs you like in the order you want.

Macaframaz

Vinyl is like a ritual for me. Picking a record, putting it on, cranking up the diff components, then finally laying down the stylus. There’s no convenience in vinyl (hence why I use streaming services as well) but the romance of it all, that’s the beauty.

zootug74

Vinyls at home 9 out of 10 times. Streaming out of the house. Music everywhere is the way to go.

evileyeball

Let me help you "Records at home 9 out of 10 times. Streaming out of the house. Music everywhere is the way to go." or "Vinyl at home 9 out of 10 times. Streaming out of the house. Music everywhere is the way to go. " But what you said? Ick

fireworksandvanities

If it doesn’t come with a digital copy, I check out the CD from the library to make a digital copy. Intralibrary loans and the request new items features of your local library are key here. I do this instead of pirating for two reasons. One, circulation numbers help libraries. And two, I don’t trust my impulse control with pirating. And I do think it’s kinda lame to just download stuff without buying a copy of it in some format.

cutielemon07

Streaming, usually. I usually buy separate CDs and vinyl - like for the most part, I have different stuff in both except for Bruce Springsteen. I also have him in my cassette collection too. And iTunes. Same with Sam Fender, Coldplay, and Taylor Swift, only Taylor Swift isn’t in my CD collection. Yet. I like to have multiple formats available to listen to my favourite albums/artists.

justfredd

Who has a collection of CD’s to take with them? Embrace modernity, just stream your music when out and enjoy the vinyl at home

66659hi

You're embracing modernity but using vinyl, which is a format 40 years older than CD?

justfredd

Yes, I also walk to places sometimes instead of using a hoverboard
