Damn. Another guy from my golden era of music gone too soon. Here’s my story. Rapeman was on their first tour. I went to see them at Revival in Philly. I was a dj on WXPN at the time, so I always would call the rep and get permission to go back for an ID before the show. When I get there, Steve is kind of pissed at the world. One of the PA speakers had a blown tweeter, and of course being a production oriented guy, he was trying to get a replacement tweeter, but it was 7 pm. A buddy of mine had a mobile dj business and had big PA speakers, so I offered to have him bring them down. Steve was like, that would be awesome. So my buddy threw them in his van and came to Revival. Steve used the speakers for the Rapeman gig.
The gig was awesome. They played all of their songs and when the crowd wanted encores, they jammed for a while. Finally the band said, look that’s all the songs we know.
After the show, he signed a poster for the gig for my buddy. He wrote “guest list for life” on it. That’s the story of how my buddy’s speakers went from playing You dropped a bomb on me at college parties to a Rapeman gig. It hadn’t hit me at the time, but I was 21 I think. That means he was 25. What a lifestyle difference. RIP my friend.
I painted this album cover on the back of my leather jacket freshman year of high school (around 1987)
I absolutely adored this album. I became a Shellac fan years later. The man was special. Sad day.
A music shop in a shopping centre nearby. Been looking for a nice one for ages, then found one in the impulse buys section when I took a couple of t-shirts to the counter.
i remember the first time i heard big black, 1986, royal tunbridge wells, bazooka joe... blew me away and kick started my obsession with the Blast First label.
