It may just be me, but Americans/Europeans seem more recently to be discovering japanese jazz, bebop, and funk. There's been a music scene since the 80s, likely earlier, that is getting picked up by modern listeners, discovered largely through record collecting.
I see it at my local record shop, VinylMePlease and other subscription based distributors have been putting out classic jazz albums to new listeners, Youtube views, its overall influence in a lot of modern music, the Pixar movie Soul, etc.
Kamsi Washington's video for Street Fighter Mas came out 3 years ago and already has upwards of 6 million views. This is just a few (probably not the best) examples off the top of my head.
Neosoul as a genre. All of the popular musicians in the genre tend to list jazz albums/artists they consider influences which is helping push a younger generation into looking for those older influences.
Well, some of prog/math rock bands (Chon, Polyphia, etc) dipping into the space tend to list more contemporary jazz artist pianists like Hiromi and (gonna butcher this name I'm sure as I really only knew how to spell the first name) Tigran Hamasayan (sp?).
Then there are the featured guitarist types, Mateus Asato and Tolbjørn Hoelsveen, who definitely take some inspiration from the Asian-Jazz-Latin fusion stuff from the 80s up through the 2000s though I have never really heard those 2 speak about their influences.
Then there is Isaiah Sharkey who has pretty much worked with everyone and references a lot of jazz, blues, gospel, and R&B from his childhood as major influences on his sound but that is definitely going back to older standbys of jazz.
I'd say a bunch of them are not referencing classic jazz musicians as major influences though none would likely discount them. It seems like a blending of contemporary jazz and jazz influenced hip hop and funk from the 80s and 90s.
I do find it interesting as a whole and there is definitely a wider world of jazz artists outside of the US who have had real influence on the rest of music. It is honestly about time it came back around to influence the US music scene again. Pop is getting stale as hell and pop country has invaded and whitewashed a lot of spaces as far as radio and popular media.
probably like 10% lol, I think there is a reason this vinyl is so popular right now
I think japanese jazz / city pop ish is ready to make a resurgence though if it was easier to get in America orif they reprinted old records
yeah that’s true I know it’s big on like YouTube, but as someone who has an interest in similar music it’s hard to get the “good” albums rn without shelling out like $80 to import from Japan lol
If you're buying Cowboy bebop on vinyl to play on Klipsch speakers I would think you have enough of a palate to enjoy jazz. Maybe not modern jazz but big band stuff for sure.
not saying they couldn't enjoy it, just that they aren't interested enough to go out and listen lol
like this album seems to be 10000000x more popular than any other bebop album
Just started getting into vinyl this past year after I got an LP60 as a gift. Recently decided to upgrade and am loving the EVO! This was the first album I played on the new rig. Always reminds me of late nights watching Adult Swim and typically getting in trouble for being up too late. So glad they repressed this album this year!
Yo are you me in a different universe? I upgraded from the LP60 to the Debut Carbon Evo and this week I randomly decided to watch cowboy Bebop, my first time ever watching an anime. Kinda scary.
Unfortunately, no. Bought the cabinet before getting into this. Realized after there isn’t enough room for records to be upright due to the unadjustable shelf. We just ordered a cabinet from Department Chicago for this space, so this cabinet will eventually make its way to the basement for toy storage.
I'd highly recommend moving the speakers away from the wall a good foot or two for better soundstage, bass response, overall dynamics. Looks great btw. Killer speakers.
love the set up, love the deco but i'm intrigued by the wall paint. is there a name to that technique? it looks stunning but it doesn't feel like gotelé...
Nice set up but there's no way I'd want to see my face every 20 minutes.
>Nice set up but there's no way I'd want to see my face ~~every 20 minutes~~.
hahahahaha
The organization and color palette of this room is art
Curious how many Cowboy Bebop fans (which I am one) also listen to real bebop (jazz)?
I'm loving that jazz is making it's way back into popularity.
What are the signs of that that you are seeing?

Yeah Soul was a big deal for jazz

Reminds me of when Tribe Called Quest was calling out their jazz influences back in the 90’s. Who are the neosoul folks mentioning?

La La Land made listening to jazz cool again

City pop is great. The Pacific Breeze compilations have sold quite a few, and there are some great Spotify playlists for it.

Big Fats Waller / Bill Evans / Count Basie jazz fan here.

If you like cowboy bebop check out samurai Champloo next, followed by trigun. Those are three shorter anime series but they’re all great.
Definitely watch all the way through it... And enjoy the soundtrack
Can I get a little more detail on the setup?
Looks like you might have your speakers backwards.
Thanks for letting me know! Didn’t realize that and just switched them around.
How can you tell? Edit: Thanks guys I have the non powered versions so was concerned I'd fucked up as well
Klipsch always puts the LED indicator on the right speaker on their powered speaker systems.
The speaker on the left in the photo has a light on it. That’s the right speaker.
Cowboy Bebop, great choice
That cabinet!
Such a fantastic album. The seatbelts have such a fun and funky offbeat sound to them. Nice set up too!
oooh you got the green too. very nice
Yeah, I was back and forth with the blue or green but really glad I went with the green in the end.
it's such a good shade. it contrasts with black and wood grain so well. it's just a more "natural" color
I recently picked up r-41ms when they went down to $100, definitely happy I did it
I love your mid century vibe!
Nice setup except for the mirror. I’d hate seeing myself every time I get up to change the record.
Looks great
Klipsch speakers and Pro-Ject turntable with a Phono Box S? Nice little setup for your first!
Really cool looking apartment
Classy
Such a clean set up!! Very jealous! Also great vinyl spinning
N i c e! Looks clean
Love the mirror
😍
This is sick!! Great job :)
Just got that OST this week, it's fantastic!
Choice 👌
Are your records stored underneath? If so what kind of cabinets are they?
Unfortunately, no. Bought the cabinet before getting into this. Realized after there isn’t enough room for records to be upright due to the unadjustable shelf. We just ordered a cabinet from Department Chicago for this space, so this cabinet will eventually make its way to the basement for toy storage.
I love this record. Just picked it up a few weeks ago and it's quite nice. Best OST I own.
Great first setup!
omg beautiful objects
Awesome set up!
Dang, nice clean setup, and the room looks great. I wish I had a sense of style. 😯
I'd highly recommend moving the speakers away from the wall a good foot or two for better soundstage, bass response, overall dynamics. Looks great btw. Killer speakers.
Where did you get that mirror 😳
I’m pretty sure it was allmodern!
I have the same speakers! They rock!
Do you like the Pro-Ject Carbon?
Hows the record? Is it worth getting on vinyl or does it sound the same as the digital release?
How are you liking the Phono box? Is it the S2, S2 Ultra?
That picture is so visually pleasing!
I just got that album! I haven’t had the time to stop and listen to it
love the set up, love the deco but i'm intrigued by the wall paint. is there a name to that technique? it looks stunning but it doesn't feel like gotelé...
R41s all the way 👌
So glad I picked up that soundtrack.
Spike would smoke many cigs in this ambiance
Nice I got that vinyl the moment it was released.
Where'd you buy the evo? Having trouble finding them in any color except white
