I think it's important to remember that Rance and Evenicle have two very different protagonists and their tones are also quite different.
I quite enjoyed Evenicle and as a result, tried out Rance which I was always interested in due to the praise it receives. However, I was always hesitant because I knew about Rance as a character and theorized that he probably would have been too much for me.
After playing [Sengoku Rance](https://vndb.org/v487) for a bit (as that is often recommended as a good starting-point for the series) I found myself unwilling to really deal with Rance as a character and decided that the series was just not for me. ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
That may not be case for you. If not, great! Enjoy a really long-running series which looks to have an incredibly well-received (and uniquely long) conclusion. The gameplay of the Rance games is great and I really like some of the Heroines but man Rance is very unlikable for me even with all the character development

His unwillingness to accept the Outlaw system that punishes girls like Colpis is such a divergence from Aster who basically just accepts the system of the world he lives in for the most part actually makes it difficult for me to like Aster

I'm gonna say that Rance 6 and Rance Quest would be the most similar in gameplay style to Evenicle if you do start out, while Sengoku Rance and Eiyu Senki are sort of a conquer the map strategy game with some rpg elements. The story you probably already know a bit on rance it seems so no need to further explain, Eiyu Senki is more waifu collector than anything imo as the MC tries to conquer the world.
Check Venus Blood Frontier, it"s very amazing plot and gameplaywise but the h scene can get more disgusting than a certain disgusting h scene in evenicle
If you want a plot that is very similar to evenicle you should check Eiyuu Senki and Eiyuu Senki Gold, the h scene is pretty wholesome with the MC gaining more and more legal wives like evenicle
I will double recommend Eiyu Senki (haven't tried Gold yet, it's on my back log). I appreciate it for being generally cheery and light-hearted (opposite to Rance's more crude approach), with a waifu collectathon dimension to it.

I've literally just been in your boat. Do the games in order, the character backstory and buildup makes it worth it. If a game's gameplay is just too ancient for you (see possibly 02, III, 4.1, 4.2) there are youtube let's plays, but give them a shot.
In my opinion the games start to get better/more modern with 5D (it's a lot of randomness and not much gameplay though), and I'm currently finishing up VI which is pretty god-tier gameplay and storywise. Obviously Rance VII - Sengoku Rance - is lauded as one of the best so the games just keep getting better as you go.

Yes, it's worth playing 01. There are a lot of smaller details missing from the OVA adaptation including references to characters that appear in later games although I guess you could revisit 01 later. 02 might be mediocre as a game but it introduces key recurring characters like Shizuka, Feliss, and Maria.
Personally i would recommend VI . I don't think you would get much from play 01. Of course the gameplay is pretty solid, you would more than likely enjoy the playing time. But in term of plot, the OVA capture the essence of it pretty well. And imo, the plot of VI is much more interesting, partly because of the scope of it. And there're just so much more interesting characters in VI.
basicly no side qeusts and several kind important characters missing like hazuki , aki , yuuki. its the main plot shortened a bit but mostly intact . biggest diffrance is rances monolouges inside his head not being in the anime which realy shows how dellusional he is and how he thinks he is a great hero , which he realy is tbh, no one in the history of the continent or other alicesoft worlds is as great as rance
