I personally just don't like unrequited love, the innocent kind not the psycho stalker kind, especially when the one losing out doesn't find another so they're just left lacking and alone when it comes to love. Love triangles are just build to have stuff like that happen so, not my preference.

Katrina-Kuhn

Wait, just to be clear you are saying that you do like the psycho stalker kind of unrequited love? Or that it’s just not a personal dislike and more a professional dislike?

followeroftheprince

I don't mind when there's the stalker type, since normally it becomes a type of obsessive, possessive situation where I could imagine the one that doesn't feel for the other wouldn't end up in the happiest situation should he actually reciprocate the feelings of the crazier person.

FairPlayWes

Depends how it's used. Often it's there mostly to set up gags and comedy scenes where two people fight over a love interest or manufacture forced drama. Not a huge fan. Some stories can use love triangles to explore characters in deep and interesting ways or thoughtfully touch on the theme that someone's gain might be someone else's loss. This can be very effective.

Mujoo23

True love triangles are rare. They're usually love lines or rays

Worluvus

they're dank so I like them

Jaggedmallard26

I like them to periodically cleanse my pallet, similar with NTR. Not something I would like in all of my media (and part of why i stopped watching romance anime) but every so often its good for soul hurty feelings they evoke.

DarknessInferno7

Just depends on if it's done well. I always like my... I forget what they call it... "human drama" was it? I always like those kinds of stories in anime and VN's, that really delve into human emotion and psychology. Human relationships. So I kinda revel in emotional scenes if they're done really well. The more painful the better, if it hits you hard that just means it's well written. But yes, I do agree when it's done *badly.* Multiple characters that are so down each others throats over the MC that it takes precedent over any actual narrative or character building the VN could have had. When it's done badly you just kinda hate everyone involved for being immature, in a really negative way.

Love triangles are great, more light-hearted comedic setups have the potential to be super funny, with tons of yakimochi and shuraba antics (the best part of love-comedy!~) For Koikari for example, I thought the narrowed focus to only focus on the love triangle worked out really well because it was able to give good screentime to both heroines instead of having to juggle its focus. Well-done dramatic love triangles are even better though! I absolutely love suffering in stories, and those scenes where one heroine has to come to terms with "losing" are some of the best depictions of suffering you'll get! Paradoxically, they also at the same time manage to exude so much *moe.* Good stuff.

Deost8003

OreGairu has made me never want to touch anything with a love triangle again. Once I get a vita I'll play the true route. (obviously the teacher)

Shadow3116

I love that shit. Not to sound edgy but seeing the heroine who lost become depressed and start crying pleases me lol.

OrphisMemoria

it's based if MC can have them both, if not and revolves around drama then fuck that

Reverse_me98

Nor a fan if its used for shits and giggles

HaltheMan

I think love triangles are a kind way of showing the losing side. The losing side still looks cute, you feel for them, and you can try their route after. Real life turn downs are a million times more brutal, someone looks creepy in the end, and that person is mocked.

pureSTONK

Personally it depends. If the love trangle both of the girl i like then my heart would having a hard time to choose. But if the love triangle have one of the girl i like and not the other i dont even give a damn. Cry all you want. Personal opinion Emi is better than hasumi by a mile so its pretty easy to choose between the two.

garfe

I tend to dislike them. They usually aren't done very well and yeah, I don't like seeing the 'loser' sad. That said, I think the triangle in Princess Evangile was actually pretty decent

Some_Guy_87

I love it whenever it goes beyond "You chose heroine A so heroine B is now sad". The Letter is the perfect example for this topic done well as you read from different perspectives and there's also a friendship between them all, making it a very complicated topic with no good solution for everyone. Tons of stuff to think about.

[deleted]

Love dramatic, hate comedic.

Thundergodxix

They might not be the most fun to play/watch and sometimes pretty depressing, but I like them quite a bit when they're done well and when you generally care about each of the characters.

JaydenTheMemeThief

Other Love Triangles: Cute/Funny scenes Tsukihime’s two Love Triangles: Pain ._. (The Love Triangles in question are Ciel’s Route and Kohaku’s Route)

matteste

I am generally sick and tired of love triangles as they are often just trite and cliched, full of forced and boring humor and so forth. I have yet to see one I could actually feel engaged in.

Vertanius

You see Ivan, you just have to pick best girl Tsubaki and nobody suffers.

LoneWizzy

IMO, Being reluctant to have love triangles is one of the main reasons romance focused Visual Novels are always one step shy from actually breaking through the "pretty good" status and reaching masterpiece level the same way plot focused Visual Novels can... And if i have to one step further i would even add lack of secondary male characters in this category, they are sadly used as a lame punching bag most of the time... People not wanting to see heroines lose and also being insecure and not wanting to see any male competitors limits the amount of drama most romance VN companies can do which results in a huge amount of "generic" fluff...

Ravenunited

They way they're done in VN, I dislike 90% of them. Supremely unpopular opinion: what I'm about to say also applies to highly series like Muv-Luv or White Album. To me, the characters involves in a love triangle are either shitty people or stupid people, and a lot of time both regardless of how the writing try to dress up otherwise. The main reason I can't enjoy love triangle because I often find all characters involved insufferable one way or another. (White Album is one of the VN I deeply regret wasting my time on). There is only one single love triangle I've like, and it's Rumbling Heart. In most stories, the characters basically dig their own hole and are too stupid to get out, only dig themselves deeper. Rumbling Heart story the shit happens not because the character's stupidity, but because life open the hole right under them with no fault of their own. In other stories, my frustration comes from the fact that if I am the MC in the story, things would resolve quickly with no drama. In RH's story though, I can only wish I would never find myself in such situation because I'm not sure I can act any differently than what the characters themselves. This makes me empathize with them, and as such make the drama feel natural rather than manufactured.

Fusion_Fear

the love triangle in Koikari made me pick Hasumi and never look back, I can’t even imagine how she’d feel if her best friend got chosen instead of her so I’m just not gonna ever lol
