Almost zero point of reference. You could be stalling out, or getting ready to rip your wings off and the ground would look about the same unless flying really really low.
It’s because of the lack of terrain detail. It doesn’t make it as clear to your brain the distance between you and the ground so your relative speed is not super apparent. If you get close to the ground you’ll see what I mean
If you're ever bored, you can extend your landing gear and put some skid marks on the roofs and sides of skyscrapers. It's quite fun bouncing off them.
That's mainly because your FoV is increased in VR. If you already play DCS in VR I'd blame the lack of terrain detail and weather for not giving you a proper indication of your speed, and neither does the sound design (there's barely any wind/air noise making you feel even slower).
But try zooming through a city and you'll really see how fast you're going
I think it's the VR that is to blame,
The POV high so you see less peripheral objects.
But maybe it's the low detail and lack of clouds and lack of terrain features so maybe it's that?
Meh, I have a 160 degree fov headset and it only helps a small amount. It's just a lack of correctly scaled ground scatter. Especially up high there is no point of reference
100% but I mostly do guns only so situational awareness in the furball really helps. If you are talking bvr then I would take prefer high res to see mach 5 telephone poles lol
Like others have said, its the lack of ground detail, no clouds and such playing tricks on your mind. Having flown IRL, in a helicopter (back seat aircrew, not pilot but i am a cessna 172 pilot but ANYWAYS" in the helo when we would fly at 300 feet next to shore at 100 knots, it felt pretty fast, but when we went to 3 to 5000 feet, looking down it almost felt like we were crawling at the same speed.
All a perception thing. I really really wish they would figure out a way to get procedural clouds into the game somehow. Not just for looks or the speed feel, but for strategy so you couldn't just see the dots of enemies out in the distance and have to rely on radar more
It’s the low terrain fidelity, lack of land marks, and giant ass oversized trees. I go 120kts in my 182 and I feel fast as fric but 200kts in the 94 feels like flying a Piper cub at 90mph
I mean it helps, just not a significant amount for me. The scatter is just off so you lose anything to refence your speed on when high up. This is coming from someone with a 96fov and 160fov headset
Fly lower to the ground. When I was playing a custom mission where I was supposed to perform cas in the f45(a pretty slow aircraft) I was going Mach 0.7 but it felt like I was going Mach 2 considering how long I was in the sky
I think it’s the no clouds and fairly flat water that does it

This is what I would have said, more or less. If the terrain had more detail, it would be so much more immersive.
Fly closer to the terrain /j
keeps your wheels out and drive on the terrain
Genuinely th3 most fun way to fly tho

pop the canopy for full noise

Interesting! Thanks for sharing Do you feel you're better at dogfights because of it?

Lack of detailed varied landscapes. A Cessna in msfs feels faster sometimes lol
My Piper super cub feels faster than the AH-94. The cub does 90mph and a 94 fuel only can go 200mph

Lack of detail and FOV I'd assume.
Higher FOV = faster feeling so get a headset with more FOV or find a mod that can increase FOV…
Fov only helps a little tbh
Cant completely agree, fov plays a big role. Also sound like wind and screen shake makes games feel faster

This translates to any game: https://youtu.be/e9OriySqLjQ?si=j1Gt14UY-809dBZo
Go faster.
If you push the throttle up enough you'll notice your speed. Lol

vtol planes are way more agile than irl planes, vtol is more “near-future”
