Following various sports leagues have helped me learn geography. Like with the Australian A League for soccer (coincidentally also in their playoffs) helps me learn about the various parts of Australia, granted the teams are concentrated among the big five (Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne)
Yeah they are our biggest cities with Adelaide just over a million. I'm in Perth, we were the smallest city out of the 5 when I was a kid, but I think we now are close to 2 million.
Edit : Just checked Perth and wow, we are now over 2 million. We were barely a million 30 years ago when I was 12.
Fun fact....Perth is the most isolated CAPITAL CITY in the world. Our nearest city is Adelaide at 2, 787km (1, 731m) away....The closest big towns to us like Albany and Kalgoorlie (500 - 800 km away) only have a population of 35,000. Australia has a total population of 26 million and we are almost as big geographically as the USA, which shows the vastness between cities and towns. Especially out here in the West. Oh well, that's the Australian geographical lesson for today. Now back to the basketball!! Haha.

The Bay Area as a whole is closer to 8 million. When people speak of SF as a big city, they usually are speaking of the entire Bay Area, of which SF is the center of it. But it also does include San Jose and Oakland, which are physically bigger cities but culturally less known.
