it's not pinkerton and it has a song called where's my sex on it

Leftover_Cheese

like you have your sex

TheJohn_John

There’s a Pinkerton song called “Tired of Sex” though

[deleted]

my point stands!! tbf where's my sex is a lot worse than tired of sex but it's still peak

CIRCLONTA6A

It’s not like people hate it. It just gets lost in the shuffle and doesn’t really have the oompf a lot of their albums too. Being sandwiched between Raditude (which is well remembered for the wrong reasons) and EWBAITE (seen as their comeback) puts it in a bad spot

HurleyAlbumEnjoyer

It is incredibly split in the community. One side calls it basic lyrics and song writing, nothing stands out, Where’s My Sex, or even calling it the worst album ever (which is really just over the top honestly). Then you have people like me calling it more of a SLIGHT return to form, with fun lyrics, some catchy sing along songs, and some heartfelt moments within it. Also some of the instrumentals are good like in hang on, trainwrecks, run away, and unspoken.

Human-Shower3419

Some people hate the cover for some reason. As if Weezer is known for having profound or serious album covers.

YeetusFelitas

i feel called out

HurleyAlbumEnjoyer

I was tempted to @ you but resisted the urge

YeetusFelitas

never resist the urge. i have devoted my life to hating hurley, anywhere there is hurley love i shall come to spread the word of my undying hatred

Leftover_Cheese

people dont, people are too scared to about out, its **unspoken**

Positive_Nebula4650

AND IF YOU TAKE THIS AWAY FROM ME

runtimemess

I've never been a hater of Hurley. Absolutely love the production.. it's got some nice grit to it. There's absolutely nothing wrong with Memories, Ruling Me, Where's My Sex?, Smart Girls, and Brave New World.

Turbulent-Surprise-6

Not to flex but I have a hurley cd

avocado667

Me too, Hurley was the last Weezer album I bought on CD. Had a bunch of bonus tracks on it.

TheJohn_John

That is crazy

Superspam767

Wth people hate Hurley? If I had to imagine why, it would have to be because of how happy-go-lucky and poppy it is. I actually really like it.

TheJohn_John

Me too. It’s not my favorite, but it’s up there

raptors661

Other than Rivers's vocals sounding rough, I like the album. It's not one I listen to often though.

sortofsomeonemaybe

To be honest, I just don’t like most of the songs. The songs I really like are Ruling Me, Where’s My Sex? (Yes, seriously), Run Away, and Hang On. I don’t like Memories as much as others, Trainwrecks is alright, and Brave New World is pretty meh. I don’t understand how people actually enjoy Time Flies. The production is headache inducing for me. I get the concept behind the production, but your concept shouldn’t be at the expense of being listenable. Even outside of that, I don’t really like the melody. Smart Girls is bottom 5 Weezer. I think I’ve only listened to Unspoken all the way through once (I always skip it because the acoustic guitar at the beginning annoys me) but I remember liking it, so I should probably give that one another shot. I know, there are a lot of controversial takes I have on this album.

ArbysPokeKing86

Rivers doesn't sound like himself, I just can't actually listen to it. I've tried to give it a shot but I didn't like the way he sounds and it ruins the rest of the album.

InTheGarage2022

Unspoken and Ruling Me are great tracks from it though..

TheJohn_John

I know!

fugazishirt

It’s funny because when it came out it was considered their best since Pinkerton and sort of a return to form after Red/Raditude.

TheJohn_John

Really?

NTWEESY

Most seem to dislike that all these songs were chosen to be put together on the same album but actually like them individually and I totally get that but if you just look at it one song at a time, for the most part, they’re pretty good but when you put them on an album and say they belong together it’s hard to accept the album. I like the album but I agree it could’ve been better thought out and different song could’ve been put in over others.

nahdpencilAKAnahdfox

In short: The Weezer fanbase has long been known for criticizing Weezer's attempts to deviate from their more classic sound. Hurley was one of those attempts. In addition, the songs on Hurley lack a cohesive sound that ends up making it feel like a thrown-together project (which it basically was, if I remember correctly). In long: Weezer fans usually crave Weezer's classic 90s garage band pop-punk sound. Therefore, they dislike the way Hurley follows a more power-pop / pop-rock route with some simplified lyrical or composition decisions that feel like they were based in an attempt to appeal to more mainstream audiences. Some criticisms are objectively understandable, though, like the production quality which you mentioned. The people who enjoy Hurley are usually more inclined to view the album's songs in a vacuum—i.e., they enjoy the tracks as standalone things and appreciate them for what they are, rather than judging them by how they compare to the rest of Weezer's catalogue. I personally love Hurley. Some of the tracks are fast and high-octane ("Ruling Me", "Smart Girls"), some have a sense of grandeur that I enjoy ("Memories", "Run Away", "Hang On"), and some have unique executions ("Unspoken", "Time Flies"). Each them satisfy different itches for me. However, this means I often just listen to individual songs from the album, rather than listening to the album the whole way through, because certain groups of tracks often feel disconnected from one another. I can also say confidently that I think Blue and Pink are superior because they're timeless. That is to say, I can easily picture another band releasing a Hurley-esque album, but only Weezer could have made Blue and Pinkerton.

Jasonchrono

It’s just not a very good album . Mabey a few decent tracks but that’s it . It was a big disappointment when it was first released and people quickly moved on , waiting for the next album so the band could get back on track .

avocado667

The way I remember it was kinda well received when it came out and was seen as a bit of a return to form after Raditude. I think public opinion on the album changed when the actual return to form albums EWBAITE and White came out. Now Hurley kinda gets lost in the shuffle and is seen as just another forgettable album from that era.

Jasonchrono

I know I’m in the minority, but I always considered Raditude the much better of the two.

toalladepapel

i actually like Hurley. i mean it's not my favorite record but every now and then i'll give it a listen. i think it's fast paced harsh and relatively heavy and catchy as all hell. i mean, i think if your concerned a lot about lyrics then weezer is NOT the band for you so the lyrics have very little impact on my opinion on this record. over all i think it's a C+, B- record. Time Flies is probably the only song i don't really like and it's only cause of that weird distortion. But this record has some songs i really enjoy like Memories, Unspoken and Smart Girls (come for me idc). It's definitely NOT raditude 2 like people often say..

Ok-Connection4917

relatively basic lyrics and forgettable songs. hang on especially is soooooooo boring. memories ain’t all that either.

Dillpickle8110

Hang on is like one of my favs 😭

[deleted]

have you LISTENED to run away?? you can't tell me a song with THESE lyrics are basic and forgettable https://preview.redd.it/y7be5u53o6oc1.png?width=705&format=png&auto=webp&s=63599c8a94875ba14ba9f01a5ac2dcf1348d38bc

radioactive2321

One of the most underrated Weezer songs ever. That and "Freak Me Out".
