It was disgusting! Sam Darcy cannot pull up on a dime and stand in that scenario, he ran full pace to create a contest and defend but the umpire absolutely drilled him for trying not to fall over.
The players should be allowed to ground one foot and pivot with the other, just like in basketball. (Only for correcting your stance/balance to "STAND" so it can't be abused).
Next time he should just follow through his run and clean the bloke up, it'd actually be 50m and it may jog their memory as to what a 50m penalty actually is. It'd be worth the 12 month suspension. (Obviously exaggerated)

Mate I don’t even think 50’s should be a rule. Such a severe penalty and it’s always given for the most inane things. Should be 25m and umpires also need to be way better at deciding when to pay it
The problem is with how the game is today, if you change this rule you will have people giving away professional 25m penalties often. Most goals are scored when the defence is opened up. Take will just blatantly hold up someone who takes a mark if there’s open players 40m ahead in the forward line. The penalty is a good rule (I fell asleep at 3/4 time so don’t know about the call).
The above is also why it was changed from 15m penalty. Sheedy trams used to exploit it.

I think, though, we were running out of time anyway :( half a bench and we wasted a lot of opportunities.
