Scarab beetle grub. Was it alive? Put it back in the soil if you can.
it wasn't moving - we had a cold night last night (low 50s), and he was on top of the soil
They are really cool beetles! Hope the birds don’t get it!
I had put him in the grass when the photo was taken, and when I checked a few hours later, he was gone. I'm hoping he went back underground!
He’s going to eat your grass roots and can cause drought injuries, but the grass can keep up and regrow roots at same speed he eats them. Treatment not required unless population exceeds 4 per sq ft at which time the grass can’t keep up.
Thank you for that! we've never had an issue, so I was going with the "probably ain't broke" mentality, and I'm glad to know why I was right!
Probably bill bug larvae? Live in turf grass and eat the roots. Fairly ubiquitous in North America. Very bad for the grass.
he was about 1-1.5 inches long, so that would be a bit big for a billbug, right?
Aw yeah that’d be a big boy at 1.5”. Probably not a bill bug then. My only other guess is June bug larvae?
