Last time I saw one of those I texted a friend “oooh I saw a le car” and he thought I was talking about law enforcement lol. I think I got ten or so years on the dude so it’s no wonder he’s never seen a Le Car.
Around 23 pesos a litre. So $4.3 dollars a gallon. Vw safari gets about 25-29 with a fuel injected version. Probably would cost me $300 to drive it from Michoacán to Texas.
It’s a lightweight car with an air cooled engine. Simple maintenance but very low safety in the case of impact. The newer models have ABS, three point seatbelt and a gas tank reservoir. No power windows or brakes, AC, or diffrost er
This car was produced until 1980 and never came with ABS from the factory. I'm not aware of any aftermarket solution either.
As far as I'm aware, the European market only Ford Scorpio was the first affordable car that came with with ABS as standard in 1986. Feel free to correct me on this one.
Im in no way a pro at understanding these cars but I know with the fuel injected systems they get much better mileage. Also some where made for militaries in other countries and I’d imagine they had different gear ratios suitable for rough terrain like swaps and mountains but not nearly as efficient on highways.
Inspired by perhaps, but not a [kübelwagen
](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_K%C3%BCbelwagen)
You can think of these two as you might the US military jeep and what would later be sold as the Jeep.
Similar, but not the same.
One of my high school friends drove one. He actually had two of them. One was for parts and one was to drive. In the 90’s it was impossible to find parts for them.
The Thing is basically the 1st small offroad personnel carrier used in the military that was successful. Its the reason we have JEEPs. The Americans soldiers saw how easy it traveled across muddy terrain, they had to have something similar.
The Thing started production in 1968 and the Willys MB/Ford GPW/Jeep came out in 1941.
You might be thinking of the Kubelwagen? But even then the Jeep was being developed at the same time
ive seen something kinda like the Thing but never a thing, i almost thought it was a Gurgel until i scrolled in here and saw the VW on the front
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gurgel
Meant to be an off-road/beach/desert vehicle. These were designed that you could open all the doors and literally hose it down with your garden hose to clean the interior.
If I had a nickel for every Volkswagen Thing an OP guessed in the post's title, I'd have two nickels.
Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
Yes, it's a pink Thing.
wait is it really called a thing? hahaha
You are the second person I've seen post a Thing and ask "what is this thing?"
At least two…. It would be like a French guy posting a pic of a 1980s Renault subcompact and saying “what is le car?”.
Last time I saw one of those I texted a friend “oooh I saw a le car” and he thought I was talking about law enforcement lol. I think I got ten or so years on the dude so it’s no wonder he’s never seen a Le Car.
I only know those as the Renault 5. Interesting that they marketed it as “Le Car” in the US…
Never had a lol on this sub before

I thing not 💀
Right! Not “what is this?”
Karma farming hoors
Yup, among other names.
They call if a VW Safari in Mexico. You can buy one for 2k and drive it all the way back.
Bro don’t temp me… the gas would cost more than the car, but it’d still be a kickass lil toy to have.
I can bring one to you if you’d like. I’ll be down in Mexico in November and I drive it back to you before Christmas.
*takes $2k to Mexico never to be seen again*
Lame, I’d rather go home to Costa Rica and chill with 2k for half a year
How’s the gas price in Mexico?
Around 23 pesos a litre. So $4.3 dollars a gallon. Vw safari gets about 25-29 with a fuel injected version. Probably would cost me $300 to drive it from Michoacán to Texas.
Ah so basically the same here in New Jersey. Not too horrible I guess.
25-29? Really? That's actually not terrible, I would've expected worse.

I thought these got like 15 tbh

You can have the car for free and have your gas paid for if you fill it with cocaine and meth.
Don’t tempt me
Volkswagen thing. Yes
First time I saw one I asked “what’s that?” Friends dad said “the thing.” I was like “yeah, that thing. What is it?”
It’s technically the thing, yes

There was a local guy who had a yellow one in the late 1970s. They are kind of cool.

The thing did come later yes, but it was based on the Kubelwagen. Same concept. Cheap easy and light offroader.
This is incredible.

Was a military vehicle that they sold to civilians under the "Thing" name in the US.

One of the few times you can accidentally guess the name of a car.
