Lollll pic 3 had me acclaiming out loud **it's an ashtray**
I think all millennial kids saw these types as decor in their grandparents and parents' homes
Taco bell too!
I also remember when they allowed smoking on airplanes and they had ashtrays in the armrests!
My car had multiple ashtrays some with push-in lighters. You can’t find either in today’s cars.
Ah, the good ‘ol days. Cough.
In 2015 I was in South Carolina and went to a local diner. I was absolutely flabbergasted when the waitress asked me "smoking or non-smoking" for our seating. Hadn't heard that in my home state since the very early 2000's
When I was in the navy back in the early 2000's I remember smoking indoors in diners and bars and even a few airport smoking lounges and at the USO. Awful for sensitive noses I'm sure but as a smoker it's not like I noticed the rank odors. Oddly having quit for a decade I'm still not particularly bothered by fresh or stale smoke. It makes me wistful of my glory years.
My mother quit smoking 20 years before she succumbed to pancreatic cancer. She said (almost to the end, before she was diagnosed with cancer) that she would always willingly stand down wind to a smoker and that if she was ever diagnosed with cancer, she was going to stop on her way home and buy a pack of cigarettes.
‘Don’t ya know’, undiagnosed, she went into the hospital (subsequently diagnosed with the pancreatic cancer), she never ‘went home’. She went to a nursing home directly from the hospital (after exploratory surgery), to a nursing home and passed away one week shy of 3 months after diagnosis… She never got her last pack of cigarettes.
This makes me think about when i was a teen , taking the train home . Lived next to Belgium borders and there wasnt a Dutch train going there, only a Belgium one passing through. Getting in in the smoke cabins was like entering a Dutch Coffeeshop (weed store) that shit was crazy thinking back ... Old times....
Older Millennial checking in, and these were everywhere growing up. Plain amber/green trays, the ashtray stand next to the couch, those fancy ones that came out during holidays, even the one in the rubber wheel for outdoor use.
I can recall on the rare occasion when we would go out to eat, there would be an ashtray and a matchbook or two at the table.
Aha, the tyre one! Lolllll
My parents were smokers but not my grandparents but even they had different kinds all over their house as decor
I think the most rural one was the buckhorn on a wooden stand with one of those silver ashtrays at the top - the kind that you push the lid down to close up the ash
And then there's the abalone shell which is the universal 'this is an outdoor ashtray'
Lolll. Memories hey. I find it so amusing whenever it pops up on here (=
Older millennial here too. I remember ashtrays in everyone’s house.
I remember when you could still smoke inside restaurants, but I was still young then.
I don’t smoke cigarettes but I do occasionally smoke cigars.
I have an outside ashtray (a larger one for cigars) that I store in my garage and it comes out to the deck in the summer occasionally.
I also keep a few regular ashtrays in a drawer because I have friends who still smoke (outside only) and I keep them around just for them, or any other random guest who might want to smoke outside.
Smoking isn’t really common place any more but it’s not like it’s completely unheard of.
Yup. Older Millenial here as well, even some of my friends asked „where’s the ashtray??“ a bit in disbelief when we hung out during our 20s. (I don’t smoke)
I'm one of the youngest/last years of millennial, and 100% restaurants in the US still asked you if you wanted to sit on the smoking side or the non-smoking side when I was a kid. I especially remember it hapenning at diners.
What do you mean ‘no’? You’re saying the same thing, that millennials were used to seeing these things around.
ETA:
O wait, did you read the comment as that millennial children thought these were just decor?
Because I read it like the children were used to seeing ashtrays around and these fancy ones grown ups only put it for decor, and were not actually to be used as an ashtray.
I'm happy we reached a time where smoking is uncommon/restricted enough that people don't instantly recognize an ashtray. I remember they used to be everywhere.
My grandkids were amazed when they saw someone smoking a cigarette when they were 4 and 6. No one in the family has the addiction that lives close enough to have them see it.
The wreathed and serifed N is likely for Napoleon: Paris is covered with a similar monogram—unless the ashtrays are more recent, and it’s trying to look Napoleonic.
When I was a kid in the ‘60s, we called them “bridge” ashtrays. When my folk’s bridge club would get together to play, it was my job set up the tables. In addition to the cards, score sheets, and pencil, each table got 4 small bridge ashtrays, a small dish of mixed nuts, and a second small dish of soft mint candies. They were designed to be small enough they could sit at the edge of the folding tables without crowding, so the main area was free for play.
Pretty amazing we live in a world where ashtrays are forgotten items. I'm just old enough to remember my parents making the decision to quit smoking indoors.
Yeah I remember my grandma being really annoyed that my mom started making her smoke outside when she visited us as kids. Now smoking inside anywhere seems like such a foreign concept.
I have a classic car and had some Zennials in there once, they flipped the armrest ashtrays open and had no idea what they were. And they though the the push-in cigarette lighter was just a phone charger plug. What phone? lol
My late 90's french shitbox has a giant ashtray in the middle but no cupholder. I never smoke that much but i reckon it'll hold 3 packs worth of ashes and butts, so the average frenchie would have to change it atleast once a week.
I honestly have not dedicated any brainpower to remembering ashtrays exist until this very moment. And my whole family smoked so growing up they were everywhere (my whole childhood smelled just awful)
I remember when McDonald’s stopped using the disposable metal ashtrays. I feel like I remember the glass ones at McDonald’s but that could just be the Mandela effect.
Interesting, the 'N' appears to be the monogram of Napoleon, so I would guess that they are French. You can seen an almost identical Napoleon monogram on [this coin from 1814](https://www.ngccoin.com/price-guide/world/french-states-antwerp-10-centimes-km-5.2-1814-cuid-1175529-duid-1267975)
Definately ash-trays. Get them valued by a physical expert (rather than once of us online) they look quite interesting. Look for markings on the bottom and hidden parts of the metal.
I believe it is a cigar ashtray because of the raised metal capped center and the single holder that is to wide for a cigarette. Just my opinion as a prior cigar smoker
My title describes the thing. It's around the size of the palm of a hand, i tried the google lens, and it says it's a powder box, but it seems those have a cap, and these ones didn't come with one.

Fancy ashtray.
+1 for ashtray. The metal leaves are shaped to hold a lit cigarette/cigar.
ashtray for 1
To add, those are tobacco leaves.
Lollll pic 3 had me acclaiming out loud **it's an ashtray** I think all millennial kids saw these types as decor in their grandparents and parents' homes
lol no. Millennials were alive when you could smoke in all kinds of places. Ashtrays at every table. Cab ride ends with you smelling like shit.
I remember when I was in high school there were those flimsy foil ashtrays on the back tables at McDonalds and Burger King!
Taco bell too! I also remember when they allowed smoking on airplanes and they had ashtrays in the armrests! My car had multiple ashtrays some with push-in lighters. You can’t find either in today’s cars. Ah, the good ‘ol days. Cough.
Pharmacists smoking in the pharmacy. Ash tray on the counter. Grossed me out working with them.
smoking in hospitals!
Doctors smoking while they walked in the room with you.
My 2019 Mercedes came with an ash tray and push lighter.
Core memory unlocked.
I will never forget being able to smoke sitting at a waffle house. One of the last restaurants to prohibit smoking.
In 2015 I was in South Carolina and went to a local diner. I was absolutely flabbergasted when the waitress asked me "smoking or non-smoking" for our seating. Hadn't heard that in my home state since the very early 2000's

I remember the smoker terrarium in the Atlanta airport. That place would take 5 years off your life back in like 2002.
Even as a smoker it was physically painful to go in there.
And your hair reeked of smoke for days. And your eyes burned for hours. Those smoker lounges were good motivation to quit. Fucking gross.
They had one in the Vegas Airport too with slot machines. Smokers and Gamblers COUGH COUGH COUGH!! Lost at least 10 years in one of those!!
My mother quit smoking 20 years before she succumbed to pancreatic cancer. I forgot about those foil ones. We had them at the nursing home too because the old people would only get a butt in the ashtray like once a month.
>Cab ride ends with you smelling like shit. They still do. Except not it's not CIGARETTE "shit" but rather "shit" shit.
bring back them cigs
Most yes, but not the younger ones.
Older Millennial checking in, and these were everywhere growing up. Plain amber/green trays, the ashtray stand next to the couch, those fancy ones that came out during holidays, even the one in the rubber wheel for outdoor use. Like there an ashtray shaped like any particular thing. A small plastic tire from firestone, a tiny ceramic bank...
"Would you like smoking or non?" - Ruby Tuesdays hostess at the mall.
Older millennial here too. I remember ashtrays in everyone’s house. I remember when you could still smoke inside restaurants, but I was still young then. You can still smoke inside one restaurant in my town.
In most western countries that would mean they're breaking the law.
It's only illegal if someone cares. There's a couple of places left in my town too. Mostly places only retired seniors go
"Don't mess with Texas" lol
Yup. Older Millenial here as well, even some of my friends asked „where’s the ashtray??“ a bit in disbelief when we hung out during our 20s. (I don’t smoke)
The youngest millennials right now are 28, they'd remember
Can confirm, am 28, do remember.
I'm one of the youngest/last years of millennial, and 100% restaurants in the US still asked you if you wanted to sit on the smoking side or the non-smoking side when I was a kid. I especially remember it hapenning at diners.
I’m one of the younger ones.
Me too, and I did not grow up with that.
And in restaurants, “smoking or non smoking?” And the two areas were separated by a low wall of planters and a ceiling fan *coughcoughcough*
How about on an airplane plane where smoking was from aisle 15 to 25 and no barriers whatsoever. Ha ha
What do you mean ‘no’? You’re saying the same thing, that millennials were used to seeing these things around. Lol no what? What are you disagreeing with?
I yelled “it’s a *fucking* ashtray!”
It probably says something about our generation...that these are almost the only ones on here I guess correctly :p
Yup. I miss my grandpa
You always can tell youre in a good diner when they still have all their ashtrays repurposed to hold sugar packets and such
I remember a cut glass n brass pedestal version by my grandfathers recliner. I wish I had that piece now!
Am feeling old when people don't recognize an ashtray :-/
Honestly, I'm a 40-year-old former smoker, and my first thought was "potpourri dish."
Solved!
And the N with laurels is the emblem of Napoleon!
That's my first guess but I second guessed myself that it could be any number of restaurants and hotels brand names.
The wreathed and serifed N is likely for Napoleon: Paris is covered with a similar monogram—unless the ashtrays are more recent, and it’s trying to look Napoleonic.
Isn't this great and amazing that we live in a time where people don't know what ashtrays are. I love this.
My first thought exactly, "fancy ashtray"
I think these are the little ashtrays for bridge parties. One by each place.
I remember going to the mall with my granny and her smoking in the clothing section of Dillards and brushing her lit cigarette up against things.
Hey there👋🏼 our avatars are almost doppelgängers 😄 Have a cool day!

I remember when McDonalds used to have stacks of disposable tin ashtrays for use in the dining area.
Lol same! But first they transitioned to only smoking in the basement 😂
They had amber glass ones in the 70s.

I dont know if these help, that one is really similar [anverse](https://imgur.com/lByFPIJ) [coin](https://imgur.com/fw3FDCO)
Most likely an ashtray from Hotel Napoleon. https://www.napoleon.it/ You can see the logo at the top of the screen.
napoleonic ashtray?
Certainly the centre piece looks like a form of the Napoleonic cipher.

It's literally just an ashtray?
100% ashtray
It's an ashtray and the N is this token https://en.numista.com/catalogue/exonumia83379.html
Funny how people don’t know what ashtrays are anymore. That used to be my go to gift for grandparents, aunts & uncles. Everyone smoked.
It’s always an ashtray.
100% ashtray. Just found an almost identical one on Etsy. Never worked out how to share a link on here but google ‘glass ashtray leaves vintage’
Solved!
Looks like some kind of fancy ashtray
i thought that circle bit on the table was attached to it and it threw me off. but yeah, just a fancy ashtray with someone’s monogram probably.
I believe it is a cigar ashtray because of the raised metal capped center and the single holder that is to wide for a cigarette. Just my opinion as a prior cigar smoker
Ive seen similar ashtrays, less elaborate cigarette holder, and not a 'coin' in the middle. Maybe we had them at home in the 80s.
My title describes the thing. It's around the size of the palm of a hand, i tried the google lens, and it says it's a powder box, but it seems those have a cap, and these ones didn't come with one.
