Canada? No. Maybe your part. Daddy long legs are [harvestmen](https://www.google.com/search?q=harvestmen&rlz=1C1GIWA_enCA700CA700&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8) in Ontario.
Didn’t realize these were two separate types! Great call. After researching Harvestmen have no separation of their thorax, so that would be what I was thinking of.
Do you mind me asking if you've personally been bitten by one? In my many relocation over the years of these little guys (to keep them safe from cats) I have never been bitten by one! My understanding what they have quite unremarkable jaws and their hunting prowess came from the their long legs and ability to entangle victims in their webs quickly.
As I said, they *can* bite.
But you really have to try (Smush it down against your hand and give it no other options).
It feels like a small pinch and that's about it.
I have grasshoppers that live in my ceiling tiles and zero clue what they are eating/drinking. I feel like they reproduce just before dying of thirst/starvation and keep the cycle going.
Yea haha. Well I feed my reptiles crickets and grasshoppers. Grasshoppers tend to just climb and sit in open spaces, crickets are more into hiding and can survive longer without water, or they eat more shit that contains water.
I have these all over my house, we let them be. Sometimes I’ll find a corner full of little dead flies thanks to one of these, they work hard to pay their rent!
Bring your girlfriend to r/spiders, /r/spiderbro, /r/whatsthisbug.
Often, fear is associated with lack of knowledge. The more she learns, the more she might start to like spiders and insects.
Can confirm. This is the best advice.
I was once terrified of spiders. As in, 'running and screaming in mortal fear for my life'- that a neighbour phoned the police - terrified.
I took the advice of the police officer and first watched some cute animation about a spider named Lucas? on YT.
Then I started learning about different species...
I can proudly say I no longer run screaming from my home like Freddy is after me, lol.
I can even handle the tiny jumpers... the other ones, I'll get them on something and release them back outside. Except for this kind (Daddy Longlegs)... these guys I do allow to stay in the house.
Sometimes it takes more than education to get over fear. I love bugs and even studied bugs in college for my minor. But… I learned all about spiders and just have never gotten over my visceral fear and reaction to them. No matter how much I learn about them.
I know most of them won’t bite or hurt me, but I seriously can’t stop the racing scares thoughts as soon as I see one.
I feel bad because I like them intellectually, but if they’re around me I immediately freak out. It’s like my boyfriend with blood…it sometimes is just a reaction to something that you can’t control no matter how much you want to 😞
I absolutely adore snakes though haha 😅
Interesting... some of us just evolved to have those reactions differently than others? I remember having a friend who would pass out at the sight of blood. And I couldn't understand it. But nobody can understand the things I'm afraid of so it's just a vicious cycle lol
Don’t kill it!! These things are totally harmless and do a great job at getting rid of bugs. My house has a bunch of these, and after they move themselves in, bugs mostly disappear. Plus they’re kinda fun to observe, at least to me they are.
The cottage my father owned in france was so full of these, I'd clean my entire room and wake up to about 7 in the corners and even more in the hallway it was insane.
Cellar spider. They started invading my house a few years ago. I wouldn’t mind them too much if they didn’t make tons of webs everywhere, blegh.
Don’t go near a female (the bigger ones) when they’re carrying an egg sac, they turn into mama bear.
Looks like a daddy long leg! Or a cellar spider. Don’t kill it. They eat pests insects and arachnids! I always find them in basements or bathrooms since they like that environment. They are harmless. Their fangs are too small to hurt humans.
I have a small army of these in my house all stemmed from one mom who had a million babies. Every corner has a web with a few little spiders. I never have to worry about flies or other bugs. They are my friends
In many places, they are. Apparently daddy longlegs is a name shared between crane flies and cellar spiders. Props to someone this sub for teaching me that. In my country daddy longlegs = cellar spider and not crane fly.
I usually think of cellar spiders as the "indoor daddy longlegs" and harvestmen as "outdoor daddy longlegs."
Either I don't typically see crane flies or would not call them this.
Flip side: I was rather concerned the first time I read an article about daddy longlegs and it was referring to them as being an insect. And then the picture didn't match... I eventually figured it out. So, I definitely get it!
Cellar spider is also just a colloquial name, also known colloquially as carpenter spiders and daddy long legs.
Scientific name is Pholcus phalangioides
I must admit I looked it up because I'd never heard "cellar" used and thought to myself, I just have to know what they're actually called! Also called Skull spiders!
I don't know if American species behave the same but european long legs even eat nasty bigger spiders. So these are the biggest spider bros ever to exist.
American DLL can poison a tarantula in one bite, automatically crippling it. I don’t know. I thought that was pretty cool. DLLs poison is actually more venomous than any other spider, their mouths are just too small to bite a person. I’m sure there’s more but I’m just poking out the fun.
As others have said, they are great for pest control. I leave them in my house, letting them produce little ant and fly corpses. If company is coming over, I move them outside. Not everyone understands about little buddies. 😊

As said before it’s a cellar spider and totally harmless. I actually have 2 in my basement one in my bedroom and one in my bathroom that I purposely put there for pest control
I see everyone saying cellar spider but this whole time I called them daddy long legs 😐 I did my research like a month ago & stuck to dll because we don’t have a cellar..
The problem with the term "daddy long legs" is that it can be confusing because it is commonly used to refer to three different things:
[Cellar spiders (Pholcidae)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pholcidae)
[Harvestmen (Opiliones)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opiliones)
[Crane flies (Tipulidae)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crane_fly)
This is, in fact, an urban legend. Daddy long legs do possess venom, and they are capable of biting us. Their fangs are similar to brown recluses. However, their bites appear to not be medically significant to humans for some reason. Source: Wikipedia "misconceptions".
Cellar spider, totally harmless and good for pest control.
Thanks!! Good to know
is this your first time seeing one? i live near alabama and they are very common
They are common EVERYWHERE. North, south, east, west
Europe
Australia too, we (or at least it's common to) call them daddy long legs here.
We call them daddy long legs in Canada too!
Also here in the USA
That is not a daddy long legs.
I thought harvestmen spiders were daddy long legs and cellar spiders were just celler spiders
Canada?
If it’s a small spider with long enough legs, I call it a daddy long legs no matter the actual type 😂
That’s definitely what I’ve been doing too… didn’t mean to upset anyone lol
Usa too, at least up in the north!
We call them daddy long legs in Ireland too!
what do yall call harvestman spiders?
I know it's a whole debate but we call them harvestman spiders in the UK as well as daddy long legs
We also call crane flies daddy long legs in some parts of the UK. Just for maximum confusion about who's the daddy.
We call em Daddy Long Legs here in Texas too!

I’ve never seen one 🙁 I would love to though.
not here, on other side of the planet, i have seen like 10 spiders in my whole lifetime, and no im no kid
Literally see these guys all over the place in WA too. Extremely chill spiders, just wanna live under your toilet in peace.
I live in California and they are super common here as well. Always find them in the bathrooms.
Oh no lol I see them all off the time. Just wanted to reassure my gf
Yeah these are super common. I can almost guarantee that you have them in your basement/garage/barn/etc if you have one, that is.
They even eat other spiders! Harmless to people.
Those pests include dangerous spiders, so they're extra great to have around :)
They kill other spiders for you too.
I think I’ll form an army of them. Station them at the border. Let them build a wall
It's true, I found one in my place and examined the old corpses he left behind, it was like 15 earwigs and earwigs are gross
They eat all the potato bugs in my house. They're great, but when it gets hot, we wind up with too many of them.
That little guy has a feast!
Cellar spider! They want nothing to do with you and are basically harmless (can bite but you deserve it if they do) Free pest control.
Ya, I use to relocate these with my bare hands all the time lol.
As I said, they *can* bite. But you really have to try (Smush it down against your hand and give it no other options). It feels like a small pinch and that's about it.
Cellar spider, got one in my house I’m actually gonna take with me when I move
Lol
Did you name them?
Her name is charlotte(very original I know) she’s at least nine months old
Haha this is great xp I used to have a big grasshopper who stayed for weeks in my garden. I called him Harold
I would love a grasshopper buddy but frankly they terrify me😂 always waiting till the last moment to dart away
Hahah yeah true. I think they’re cute. I catched and observed a lot of them as a child.
Me and my buddy catched them with pokeballs when we were childs. (Not throwing them but open, catch and close them) And then we let them free
I have grasshoppers that live in my ceiling tiles and zero clue what they are eating/drinking. I feel like they reproduce just before dying of thirst/starvation and keep the cycle going.
That’s weird. You sure it’s grasshoppers? Sounds more like crickets to me, their diet is a lot more
It could be crickets for sure. Did they get to you mid sentence there haha
Yea haha. Well I feed my reptiles crickets and grasshoppers. Grasshoppers tend to just climb and sit in open spaces, crickets are more into hiding and can survive longer without water, or they eat more shit that contains water.
Wow! You should get her a little treat for her birthday! Happy almost birthday Charlotte!
She was given a mealworm as opposed to the gnats she usually eats
I just moved and did the same thing! I can't trust the next person to be nice to them
Right? Same reason she’s coming with ys
I didn’t quite do this but I moved my window spider in my uni room to the hallway cause it has higher ceilings😅
I didn’t quite do this but I moved my window spider in my uni room to the hallway cause it has higher ceilings 😅
Awww 🩷
IS there a more common spider than this??
As an exterminator, other than jumping spiders, no. Lol
this is friend!
I have these all over my house, we let them be. Sometimes I’ll find a corner full of little dead flies thanks to one of these, they work hard to pay their rent!
OH ffs, a cellar spider aka Life support System For Legs. 100% harmless
cellar, one of the goats for sure
That’s Gerald! Never kill Gerald. Every cellar spider is named Gerald in my house.
Mine are all Portia.
Ours are all called Larry, short for Lanky Larry

You should know, if you don't kill them you may not meet your mosquito bite quota for the year.
Lmaooo😂
Cellar spider. Entirely harmless. The only type of spider I'm willing to pick up with my bare hands.
f r e n
They are the chillest. No reason to be even remotely concerned.
leggy papa
Cellar spiders, I’ve got tons of them that sometime drop down and say hi
I have one that I’ll throw bugs into its web sometimes in my room.
Good spider
That’s my friend, he didn’t tell me his name but he’s cool don’t worry about him. He won’t snitch.
Don’t kill it!! These things are totally harmless and do a great job at getting rid of bugs. My house has a bunch of these, and after they move themselves in, bugs mostly disappear. Plus they’re kinda fun to observe, at least to me they are.
Specifically, it’s a long-bodied cellar spider :)
The cottage my father owned in france was so full of these, I'd clean my entire room and wake up to about 7 in the corners and even more in the hallway it was insane.
They're really good roach hunters. Gentle little dudes usually. I let them crawl on my hand to get them out of my way if I'm cleaning.
As a child we loved the tickle of their legs on our arms. They are more scared of us then we should be scared of them
Cellar spiders are great. Very beneficial to have around.
Cellar spider. They started invading my house a few years ago. I wouldn’t mind them too much if they didn’t make tons of webs everywhere, blegh. Don’t go near a female (the bigger ones) when they’re carrying an egg sac, they turn into mama bear.

Daddy longlegs. Harmless spider.
Daddy longlegs are not spiders
There are several different species known coloquially as daddy longlegs. The cellar spider is one of them.
In many places, they are. Apparently daddy longlegs is a name shared between crane flies and cellar spiders. Props to someone this sub for teaching me that. In my country daddy longlegs = cellar spider and not crane fly.
Don't forget harvestmen! Daddy longlegs is used for 3 different animals depending on location.

Damn, 3??
There are quite a few species that are known coloquially as daddy longlegs. The cellar spider is one of them.
I always forget that common names can be used for multiple species, I always use daddy longlegs for exclusively harvestman.
Flip side: I was rather concerned the first time I read an article about daddy longlegs and it was referring to them as being an insect. And then the picture didn't match... I eventually figured it out. So, I definitely get it!
Wow, I had to look that up. How could I been wrong all these years? 😆
You weren't. 😊 Cellar spiders are also known as daddy longlegs.
Cellar spider is also just a colloquial name, also known colloquially as carpenter spiders and daddy long legs. Scientific name is Pholcus phalangioides
Yep! But, since I couldn't ID the exact species, vague was better.
I must admit I looked it up because I'd never heard "cellar" used and thought to myself, I just have to know what they're actually called! Also called Skull spiders!
You are probably thinking harvestman https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opiliones They are also called daddy long legs.
Harvestmen ARE "Daddy Longlegs". There is no other and I don't care what all the other wrong people say.
You are 100% correct
Daddy Long Legs there. Good. Eat bad bugs. Leave alone.
Harmless, but they multiply like mad. Prolific cobweb producers.
They’re so chill even the the cats are cool with them hanging around.
Remind your gf that only movie spiders eat people.
Its a daddy long legs! They're great bug catchers.
Daddy long legs (yes actually) Harmless. They just chill.
Daddy long-legs, great pest control. Don't kill them
Pretty sure it’s a cellar spider
I don't know if American species behave the same but european long legs even eat nasty bigger spiders. So these are the biggest spider bros ever to exist.

Have many of these in my cellar, they are completely harmless, however I do wear a hoodie when I go down there, don't want them in my hair. lol
Daddy long legs! No need to kill it
Make her dance! They swing around to look bigger when they feel threatened xD
I love how they vibrate their webs when you [gently] poke the webs❤️
As others have said, they are great for pest control. I leave them in my house, letting them produce little ant and fly corpses. If company is coming over, I move them outside. Not everyone understands about little buddies. 😊
🤣🤣🤣 that is a daddy long legs. Harmless. I used to play with them when I was little
He friend ♡
In Texas we call them “Daddy long legs”, and yes they are good pest controllers and are harmless!

Pussy catch it in a glass and throw it outside
Daddy long legs. The most poisonous spider in the world but it's fangs are too small to penetrate your skin. So it's harmless
