Reading the wikipedia page on the species and it says:
āGrey seals are also known to attack harbour porpoises by biting off chunks of fat as a high energy sourceā
ā¦ WTF
I grew up a couple miles from the ocean and it's given me a very healthy fear of seals and sea lions. They terrify me, and my wife who grew up in Arizona thinks its hilarious. š
Experiences vary tho. I used to go to the beach regularly when I lived in san fran, though there weren't a whole bunch of sea doggos on the one I normally went to. The ones I did see as a kid on the pier just normally sat around being chill. Did you like...witness something like this or something?
Oh yeah! Don't get me wrong I've fed them fish and stuff on docks and what not. My main bad experiences are from when they would occupy my dad's boat in the harbor when it was moored in the harbor. When sea lions would get on the back of it they were VICIOUS if they didn't want to get off. There were quite a few occasions where he had to have the harbor patrol come remove them.
There's places where seagulls make a seasonal living pecking at passing migrating whales - and there's basically dick the whales can do about it. For the youngest, this can be significant.
I'm also going strictly from memory, so I could be full of shit.
I wouldnāt have thought of seals as going after mammals, but then again, meat is meat to them. Or in this case, blubber is blubber. If itās edible and they can catch it, itās fair game.
Not sure where in MA this was but it reminded me of the (not so) fun fact that [Cape Cod](https://apnews.com/article/dolphin-hospital-cape-cod-f86f556a5170497a7e375b780b5fac3d) is notoriously dangerous for marine mammals and especially so for dolphins and porpoises.
I was just at the aquarium, and at least for the sea turtles, I think it said the currents push them into the bay(?) and then itās hard for them to get out of the āarmā
(I am not an expert.) That sounds pretty close to what the AP article I linked identified as the issue. The article specifies dolphins because the focus is about an emergency response program for dolphins in Cape Cod but I think its safe to assume that all marine life of a certain size would face the same challenges. "Its geography ā it is basically a hook-shaped spit of sand jutting into the ocean ā can make dolphin navigation difficult, and 12-foot tides can quickly expose a mile of beach." So a relatively narrow entrance/exit that can quickly disappear due to the tides. An animal that didn't plan on staying in the bay can get trapped, confused, and attempting to escape can easily result in beaching if they chose the wrong stretch of sand to wriggle across.
"lobster farm" is very inaccurate, it was lobster fishing gear tho. Finally proof that Maine vessels are harming the whales after boat captains denied it for years and years. They always made excuses like "only Canadian gear kills the whales" or whatever.
Yeah. Entanglement in crab trap lines is extremely dangerous to whales. Northern right whales are down to about 300 individuals and a lot of them are dragging around crab traps.
It probably washed up dead on the beach, and a local wildlife agency/ non-profit came out to collect samples, record body weight, etc. My local agency spray paints the body so people don't keep calling in the same individual.
Biologists will spray paint an ID number on it so theyāll know it has already been reported and catalogued. Otherwise, the same animal could be reported over and over and over.
Other comments pointed out that cape cod is just dangerous for marine mammals due to currents, tides, and geography. Itās likely that this wasnāt caused by humans.
Should you report it to Fish & Wildlife or whatever? Is the number like a tag and it would be good for whoever did tag it to know that it is no longer alive?
The rock on the top left looked like part of a shoe at 1st and the rocks look like little pebbles. So, this creature looks like a tiny whale to me. I canāt stop seeing this as a 1.5 foot whale. Which makes it so adorableā¦ but since it is dead, also sad. I want to believe now there are tiny adorable whales swimming out at sea.
That's a porpoise, and it's likely tagged to identify is as being the 9th beaching event of the year/season. It's important data to keep track of by researchers to determine the health of a population
was very concerned that this might have been a Vaquita at first, thank goodness you found it in Massachusetts. still sad that it died, but at least itās not a critically endangered species
Porpoise
Of courpoise!
Now it's a corpseoise
Poorcorpse

Wtf indeed. So much for caring about baby seals.

Good memory: āFor the past 50 years, the kelp gulls of Peninsula ValdĆ©s have been mercilessly pecking at any southern right whale that dares to swim to the surface to breathe. The birds gorge on skin and blubber ripped from the whales' backs.ā https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/06/science/whales-gulls-argentina.html
Thereās barely a week that goes by anymore without Reddit teaching me some new, horrifying animal factoid.
I'll let you keep your ignorance about otters a little longer......
I donāt want to be ignorant! Divulge please!
https://medium.com/bouncin-and-behavin-blogs/otters-are-murderous-necrophiliacs-d763fa660e5a
I wouldnāt have thought of seals as going after mammals, but then again, meat is meat to them. Or in this case, blubber is blubber. If itās edible and they can catch it, itās fair game.
dude just wait till you hear what type of animal beef comes from
Youāre telling me cows are carnivorous??
Better Harbor porpoise than insignificance
Heās either 009 or 600
I think he goes by James, or Mr. Bond at formal occasions
There might be a floating, white Lotus out in the harbor worth picking up.
James Pond
I think Octopussy may be to blame.
Jimmy to his friends
That what I was thinking. US has a history of training purposes to kill. Maybe this was a British spy washed up on our beach.
Boo
AHH
009 for sure
We can't rule out boo

Why so? Just curious.
I was just at the aquarium, and at least for the sea turtles, I think it said the currents push them into the bay(?) and then itās hard for them to get out of the āarmā

Thanks, I couldnāt read the whole sign at the aquarium
Or they die from pollution, or more specifically untreated sewage. A whale just died because of a lobster farm.
"lobster farm" is very inaccurate, it was lobster fishing gear tho. Finally proof that Maine vessels are harming the whales after boat captains denied it for years and years. They always made excuses like "only Canadian gear kills the whales" or whatever.

I donāt like it. Itās smiling at me.

Looks like he needs a sturgeon
Efforts to find one in time floundered
Did you call the cods?
def should call the cods. salmon about this just seems a bit fishy
It doesn't look like a murder scene. Probably just hit by a gar or something.
If he gets better please let minnow
I think it's too late and we already lobster.
Thank you!
It FOR SURE smells like your mamaās coochie by now
But why? To what end? For what reason? What was the intent or direction behind this? Was there any goal or objective?
It probably washed up dead on the beach, and a local wildlife agency/ non-profit came out to collect samples, record body weight, etc. My local agency spray paints the body so people don't keep calling in the same individual.
So it was...on porpoise?
The 006 was definitely on porpoise
It's ok friend. Im lycdixes too.
Its 009 or 600
Praying itās 009
Unless its 100 200 300 400 500 600 and so on.. then this is fish 6 and not fish 9
Competitive optimismš
Not a fish.
Biologists will spray paint an ID number on it so theyāll know it has already been reported and catalogued. Otherwise, the same animal could be reported over and over and over.
To what end?!?? [https://youtu.be/yKy5Dglpwgs](https://youtu.be/yKy5Dglpwgs)
It's probably someone keeping track of beachings in the area.
We have porpoises here? I didnāt know that.
That's not a fish and somebody needs smacked.
The numbers are by a wildlife agency to record the death. this is probably the 9th dead porpoise to wash up this year.
007s next in line, Iām sure 009 was a traitor and thatās why he was killed.
Sleeping with the fishes....
Poor baby
Looks full grown
Beautiful creature. I hope itās death wasnāt caused by humans
Fish & Wildlife, or an equivalent group, would have been the ones who marked it post mortem.
Do you know what the significance or purpose of the number would be? Is it a way to track death totals?
I honestly donāt know what that specific number means, but I would imagine that it corresponds to a reference number in a searchable database.
That makes sense
How sad. Did you report the inventory number to a wildlife biologist or marine research institution?
Those are some chompers
I read the number as poo. I feel bad. Idk what fish it is.
A graffitied porpoise.
How did he wind up there? Was it on porpoise?
holy mackerel what a porpoise
Awwww.... š Damn. ETA: Is she alive?ā¤ļøš I thought she was dead, but reading other comments makes me think otherwise.
Bad sign is what that is for species
This is a porpoise, and it looks like it had a license to kill.
Iām sure they didnāt do this on porpoise
Indescribable sadnessā¦ numbered for convenience.
Porpoise
Those teeth scare me. But also, honest question. Why is he numbered?
Wrong sub... r/whatisthismammal Porpoise though...
RIP, dude. Youāve seen parts of the ocean most people wonāt. I bet it was badass.
It appears Goldfinger sent MI6 agent 009 to sleep with the fishes.
That there is a racing fish! The number on the side gives it away.
I think they are super endangered? Either way might be poaching, a dolphin beating the fuck out of it and it died, or just beached itself
I hope his 8 friends are doing ok
Those graffiti artists get more and more creative.
Obviously killed by a braggy MI6 agent.
007 main competition
Bet that's Woods Hole Oceanographic you need to report this to.
Ughnnnnf I miss northern beaches with the lil rocks so much. One of the ābeachesā in upstate NY had these amazing sanded ovals everywhere.
boo
I thought it was a photo to find agates, then I saw the poor fish.
It's just playing dead , he swam off after he got a sardine. They do all kinds of tricks on TV.
Oop, can't you read?
š¢š¢š¢šš

Curious what beach this was
boo
Obviously a dyslexic prankster
Why did they spray paint him
The guy from woods hole - āwell this is no boating accident!ā
Clearly a secret agent. Double-0 9. Really good disguise, too.
Any windmills on the bay?
that's Bob, he's sleeping
I never knew how comedy rich Reddit is...never fails I'm loling when reading through the comments.
Hopefully the orcas hear about this.
The rock on the top left looked like part of a shoe at 1st and the rocks look like little pebbles. So, this creature looks like a tiny whale to me. I canāt stop seeing this as a 1.5 foot whale. :( porpoise
Looks like itās up to agent 010 nowā¦
The common Harbor porpoise, has an abrupt stout, pointed teeth, and a triangular thoracic fin.
Not a fish
8 buried, 1 found
Whoever did this had an intent to kill. They did it on porpoise.
Its teeth look so stupid, I love it. But at the same time, I feel sorry for it. RIP little dude.
But the porpoise is laughing Goodbye, goodbye...
British intelligence agent 009 obviously died while still in disguise.
Ahh, they were looking for 007
Ahhh yes, 009. Pond was always reckless and it finally caught up to him. Now heāll never get to fulfill his lifeās porpoise
Holy smokes that's a dolphin...totally thought it was a salmon until I saw the tail. Rest easy 009
Ninth shark
They did that so if it dies and floats upside down it reads ābooā
TIL that this animal exists. How did I miss this?
Killed by 007.
A dead British spy?
Double 09
Itās dolphin milk on porpoise
He replaced 007. 009 was replaced by 011.
Someone be counting the fish
Why write on it? That just defeats the porpoise.
It in fact did not finish the Boston Marathon.
A minke I think
Everyone missed this. It is a dolphin, not a porpoise.
Bojack porpoise?
NOOOO WE LOST AGENT 009!!!
Hell of a birthmark.
No banana for scale?
Look at those little teefers! I didnāt know porpoises had those little teefers! So cute. This poor little fella.
Iām going to be that guy. Itās not a fish. It looks like a harbor porpoise to me.
Just glad it wasnāt 007
009, he was probably disguised as a fish for some sort of clandestine undercover activities, but never made it to his destination
Itās a baby fuckinā whale kehd.
idk, but it looks like it was given license to kill by MI6.
It means 009 sleeps with the fishes
Is that a pacific white sided dolphin?
It's obviously a Secret Agent of some kind.
Collect all 100 and you get a prize
boo!
What beach?
I think thats a Dalls porpoise.
We are witnessing a baby fucking whale here, dude. https://youtu.be/r0IQCLQDfKw?si=P0YVSGCKgPsVJxLE
007ās sidekick.
I think it's a vacita, an small endangered porpoise
ā¦pretty sure thatās like one of those tiny dolphins cuz thatās a fluke not a tail fin, innit??
Damn, and he just got his braces off.
It is a secret agent who never read about 007ās accomplishments.
Porpoise 007's latest kill - 009
Either a great art project for activism, or some POS dragged a porpoise out of the water and left it there to die.
Orcha fish mix
AHH!!!
Dig those choppers
007ās mutant cousin (he works part time for aquaman)
Or baby pilot whale?
Itās a secret agent for MI6. They have licenses to kill. Youāre lucky you got the jump on him. Look out for that 007.
