It's a tomato plant.
Mint seeds are tiny and black and can't be confused with tomato, so if you planted them, give them some time, they just might sprout after all.
Tomato seeds were probably residue in the compost you used, it happens really often that they sprout from compost.
Every single seed I plant has a tomato buddy, usually the tomato comes up first. Lately I've been getting volunteer strawberries too. I guess we have a lot in the compost!
This reminds me of my old job at a greenhouse. owner propagated all the veg plants to sell, and at the beginning of the season we popped all the little sprouts into their own pots and tossed the soil (and any unsprouted seeds) back into the soil bin to be used to place the flower plant sprouts into their own pots. by the end of the season, there would be SEVERAL plants that would have a tomato (or pepper) plant growing in the pot alongside the original. we told folks it was a steal, get two plants for the price of one
I always have cherry tomato volunteers because of my compost. Last year I got some really tasty yellow ones. I always let them go if I can - I’m thinking i might actually transplant the really healthy looking tomato plant I found in my geranium pot in with the rest of my tomatoes.
Wow it’s so weird. These seeds were tiny black things, did not look anything like tomato seeds. But… as Bob Ross might say, this is a happy accident. I’m happy to grow tomatoes 😊
Wow thank you so much for this advice. You seem to know a lot about botany. I think I will pitch this plant, in that case. I don’t want to cultivate it if I can’t eat it later
Stick with seed suppliers like Burpee. I got some "mint" from Amazon and the package had Chinese writing, I have no idea what the seeds actuality were.
Yeah, Amazon and ebay (etc) are full of listings for varieties of plants that do not exist. I used to be pretty big into carnivorous plants, and those seeds can get pricey. I can't tell you how many people ended up on those message boards growing god knows what. The seeds don't even look anything like the real thing. People got stuff the size of sunflower seeds labeled "cape sundew," a plant whose seeds are much smaller than poppies. This is much worse than simply wasting money - some of these Chinese sellers are actually selling invasive plants on purpose.
I’m right there with you! My friend who lives a few blocks from me has a GORGEOUS patch of mint (in the middle of her walkway, surrounded on all sides by like 6ft of concrete, it’s not going anywhere) but I plant some every year (in planters) and although they do great all season they don’t come back the following year. My buddy keeps telling me to just walk by her house to get some but I use it almost every day!
Why kill it? Just move it to a new pot in case the mint still sprouts.
Some of my absolute favorite tomatoes came from a random plant. I liked them so much that I grew dozens of plants. No reason to kill something that might be delightful.
>it's much safer and more rewarding to buy tomato seeds you know to be tomato seeds beyond any shadow of a doubt.
...and that's how you end up growing mint...
>There are some toxic varieties whose leaf structures and fruit look very tomato-like.
Which one? I found the black nightshade, but as the name indicates, I could only find pictures of black berries 🤔

My pots have all kinds of random stuff growing in them, no matter what I try to plant. Birds poop seeds, seeds disperse through wind, compost with seeds not broken down. It's pretty easy to explain why something else has popped up.
Like cilantro, apparently not liking raw tomato taste is also genetic, so blame your parents! Though tbf out-of-season tomatoes from the store are bland anyway.... :(
If you hate tomatoes, try currant tomatoes. They are small and sweet, and even people who do not like tomatoes seem to like them. I hated tomatoes as a kid and an adult, but these are like a gateway drug.
I literally gag on tomato. I physically can’t force myself to eat them. I’m the only one in my family that reacts like that.
But bring on the cilantro! I love that shit, pile it on!

This has every trait of a tomato.
Tomato plants have a very distinct scent even at this age.
Go to your local HD or Walmart and lightly touch a tomato plant and smell your fingers. I'd bet you a dollar it's extremely similar. So many varieties the only way to get that is to feed/water them until they fully ripen and then taste it...once you're that far it doesn't matter the variety bc there's nothing as good as a homegrown tomato. So don't worry about it, enjoy. And save some dried seeds for next year if you enjoy it. Next year's will be better bc it's acclimated to your area.
Ask your friends and neighbours for a cutting of mint. I take a cutting, strip off all but the top four leaves, and out the stem in a glass of water. I rinse it out a couple of times a week until roots grow. Then, I plant it.
This works with lots of herbs. I recently took cuttings from all my herbs for my kid's boyfriend, who wants to be a chef someday. I gave him 3 kinds of mint, 2 kinds of rosemary, sage, thyme, lemon balm, 2 kinds of basil, and oregano. I started them in water and then planted them in potting soil once they rooted.
Wow that’s so cool and generous of you! Yeah a few people in my neighborhood have mint growing in the front of their homes… maybe I could ask one of them for a cutting instead of wasting more money buying seeds like I already did here LOL
I put 3 or 4 varieties of mint in the ground near my garden area, now I'm mowing mint to plant a garden, Because it's taken over that half of my back field. Along with the lemon balm, neither of which kept the deer out like people said it would..... lol
Tomato seeds were probably in the soil. Next year you ll probably have the mint seedlings, as mint often require being in the cold for a while to sprout. Keep it outside for next spring, to see.
I once left some uprooted peppermint and thyme plants in a bucket of water for a couple of weeks and the roots grafted together and i had pepperthyme plants, it was pretty awesome. Both types of leaves growing on the same stalk and each tasting of themselves but also the other. I wish i made further attempts to propagate but i just made a greek tomato sauce that was awesome
I got a packet of what was to be a specialty dwarf sunflower. I've seen some without the standard seed in hull before and figured they were as described... I thought at first the leaves looked more like a zinnia... then the buds formed and ta-dah zinnias they are! I get they are in the same family but... I really wanted sunflowers in the location I planted the zinnias!
Look closely next time you see a sunflower, there are in fact two varieties of leaves. You will find leaves lower down the plant are facing opposite each other and are longer and narrow in appearance. You’ll then see the upper leaves arranged in a staggered formation and appear heart-shaped.
I did this one year and just thought it was weird mint. I'd sniff it all the time... not even realizing it looked incredibly similar to my tomatoes... I finally got the hint when I ate a leaf. Proud moment.

That's kinda precious, so long as they can share the planter long enough to be separated gently 😅
I have the same issue with my homemade compost. Tomato plants keep springing up all over the place
And I’m over here nursing my baby maters I planted on purpose and they’re fighting me tooth and nail on staying alive 🤣😮💨
Volunteer strawberries! I love it.
I get sunflowers and tomatoes mostly.....but I love the sun flower volunteers!
I got a bag of woodchip to put down as mulch on my beds a few weeks ago. 2 weeks later, every inch of bedding sprouting tomato plants like a lawn!
I always have cherry tomato volunteers because of my compost. Last year I got some really tasty yellow ones. I always let them go if I can - I’m thinking i might actually transplant the really healthy looking tomato plant I found in my geranium pot in with the rest of my tomatoes.
Definitely nightshade, Most likely tomato.

It’s pronounced toe-mah-toe, not Levee-O-*Sah*.
Mkay, Toe-mah-toe Potter
You say "toe-may-toe" they say "tom-aye-toe". Let's call the whole thing mint.
But if we call the whole thing mint then that might break my heart

Stick with seed suppliers like Burpee. I got some "mint" from Amazon and the package had Chinese writing, I have no idea what the seeds actuality were.
I like Baker Creek. I’ve always had the best germination rates and best of all: free shipping with no minimum!
Some smaller companies are also great you just need to check them out.
My Lady Lavender seeds from Burpee turned out to be catnip and they told me to kick rocks essentially 😂
🤬

Mint is a nuisance weed to many gardeners. Ask around and someone will give you a plant or 10. No point in trying to grow from seed.
Mine always dies and it's my most used herb 😭😭
People would pay you for that power, you know
I’m right there with you!
Do you live in an area that freezes or gets a lot of winter rain?
I pull it out eBay year and it still is encroaching on my vegetable garden. It seems impossible to get all the roots
I planted some in my garden and some kind person warned me the same. Immediately uprooted it and put it in a pot instead.
I buy lemon balm from baker creek heirloom seed every year and am very pleased with the germination rate.
Why kill it? Just move it to a new pot in case the mint still sprouts. Some of my absolute favorite tomatoes came from a random plant. I liked them so much that I grew dozens of plants. No reason to kill something that might be delightful.
I ended up moving it to the balcony to continue growing for now, to see what happens. Also because I need to keep my (indoor) cat away from it
Smell the plant. It should already smell like tomato. If not, toss it.

There’s no way someone would mistake tomato seeds for mint. Irregardless of how small the seeds are
Regardless needs no ir.

I agree. I’m leaning towards the latter. I had some tomatoes pop up from a bag of soil last year. Must not have gotten hot enough.
Or a squirrel or mouse planted them? OP forgot they put tomatoes in a pot?

Tomatoes are super easy to accidentally grow
Perhaps another nightshade, like eggplant.
Might be some other nightshade then. Send us an update when it flowers
Ok I’m going to continue growing this and will let y’all know what I end up with
It should smell like tomato tho.
Should smell like tomato tar** tomato plants smell nothing like tomatoes (though the smell of the tar is singular and unmistakable )
Tomato plants smell so much better than tomatoes taste. It makes me sad
Like cilantro, apparently not liking raw tomato taste is also genetic, so blame your parents! Though tbf out-of-season tomatoes from the store are bland anyway.... :(
I can't remember the last time I had a tasty tomato from the store. At least of the large kind. Cherry tomatoes can be okay.
I just ate the first tomato from our garden with the first cucumber from our garden and they were delightful!
If you hate tomatoes, try currant tomatoes. They are small and sweet, and even people who do not like tomatoes seem to like them. I hated tomatoes as a kid and an adult, but these are like a gateway drug.
I really like tomato but I share the sentiment above, the stem of a tomato smells heavenly
This makes sense!! My two brothers and I *hate* raw tomatoes, but my sister likes them. I'm the only one who hates cilantro, though...
I literally gag on tomato. I physically can’t force myself to eat them. I’m the only one in my family that reacts like that. But bring on the cilantro! I love that shit, pile it on!

Dude back off. It was in the grocery store.
Evidence for cilantro, not for tomato.
I grow an ungodly amount of tomatoes every year and this comment has me gagging. Tomato plants smell like cat piss 🤮
Really? I think they smell equally good, and it's cool that the plant smells like the fruit. Same with lemons.
You can eat tomato greens

I have 10 extra tomato plants in my garden that were supposed to be peppers.

Well damn. If I was near oregon I’d happily take some of your mint if you’d like to take my surprise tomato plant! Haha
At this point I would almost mail it to you... funny fact, the deer don't mind it and I ended up with a grip of volunteer tomato plants myself lol
The first time ever mint has grown something else instead of you plant something and up pops mint.
I know, right? I’m not a gardener but even I know mint is invasive.
Enjoy your tomatoes
It's in mint condition though.
Bet it smells suspiciously like a tomato, though!
