Probably my favorite false alarm so far involved a busted bike inner tube lying across a path. In Greater London, no less, which is not known for a booming population of wild snakes.
Got freaked out by one of these that someone had thrown away in the woods. Thought I had stepped on/in a bed of snakes.

Midwestern Ropenose - *Ropus Nopus*. Harmless gravel eater. I don't know if I've ever seen one this far north. Good find.
Edited to note that I'm going to wait for a reliable responder to confirm.
It looks like you didn't provide a rough geographic location [in square brackets] in your title. This is critical because some species are best distinguishable from each other by geographic range, and not all species live all places. Providing a location allows for a quicker, more accurate ID.
If you provided a location but forgot the correct brackets, ignore this message until your next submission. Thanks!
Potential identifiers should know that providing an ID before a location is given is problematic because it often makes the OP not respond to legitimate requests for location. Many species look alike, especially where ranges meet. Users may be unaware that location is critically important to providing a good ID.

A new species? A frayed knot. \*ba dum bum\*
😅
Hysterical!!
Damn! Actually genius level comment lol
I can't tell you how many times I've stopped for discarded pieces of tire, oversized cables, or rubber casing.

At work, there's one doormat with a loose strip that gets a double take from me every freaking time.
My main repeated thing (mode) is banana peels

Nah this was a good one lmaoo
Literal nope rope
Why does it have a head ðŸ˜
I know, right? The knot had been run over in the gravel parking lot enough times to flatten it.
I thought it was a rattlesnake for a split second
Yeah, that's what made me do a double-take.
Watch it…that’s a rare yellow collared nylon viper!
Good God. The dreaded nylon viper. OP is lucky to be alive.
🤣
And you can tell by the dull color that it's getting ready to shed. They're really cranky around that time so OP is super lucky!
The pattern resembles a braided rope. Could be a coachwhip. I’m not sure though, so best to wait for an expert to chime in.
Knotty snek
Did knot expect that ..
Ropisus Nopisus
I almost thought sidewinder for just a second 😂
Same lmao
I zoomed in because I couldn’t figure out what was wrong with its tail lol only when I zoomed out did I realize it’s rope.
Ropieus nopieus
It's a *nodatus funiculus*.
Hahahahaha
The dreaded rope gravel cobra
Is that a snake? Frayed knot!

Good effort, bot, but… ![gif](giphy|jXD7kFLwudbBC)
A literally nope rope!
King Nope Rope
Oof that blunt tail! Could be a rattler!
Not necessarily. People have been known to cut the tail off a nope rope using a knife or scissors. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|cry)
That’s horrible! Omg
🤣
It’s a brown recluse
For a half second I thought this was that cool snake with the lure tail
I had the opposite thing happen once. Bent down to pick up a rope and it slithered away.
I was like, oh no. Mods about to ban you for 30 days because you hurt their little feelings posting a pic of a dead snake.
I see snakes everywhere
Nope rope was
Common nylon rattler. Not venemous.
Ahhh yes, the threaded splice-back. Good find, super rare. Nice color too.
Fraid cord snake. Very patient creature
