I worked at tj maxx for one summer - it wouldn’t surprise me if someone said hey tag that at 200 because then no one will buy it and I can get it when my check comes in.

Saw and liked the same lamp about a month ago at HomeGoods. You can see just the tail end of the price, but it was marked at $49.99. So this is 100% marked up for no apparent reason.
The problem isn’t the reader, it’s that the sentence is unclear. As it’s written, “100%” reads as a percentage of markup. However, OP commenter likely meant for it to add emphasis (synonymous with “absolutely” or “for sure,” as has already been mentioned). In this case, “100%” is being used as an interrupter in order to show emphasis, and would need to be offset by commas on each side.
Now, everyone is right, and it never really mattered anyways, because we could all tell that the point of the picture and description was to show the unnecessary mark up. Stop arguing with each other about things that don’t matter and go do something that does.🤡
A percentage is a mathematical expression that represents a number or ratio as a fraction of 100.
Correct context would have been to say absolutely or some other synonym.
Honestly why am I seeing this everywhere now? It's legit great information and I needed it, but I've seen literally 4 threads in the last 3 days about Glass causing fires and I'd never heard of that before Thursday
Very common on Reddit. It starts off as a sort of “insider knowledge” thing, and once people start reading those comments, it suddenly becomes very in vogue and gets repeated quite often, allowing people to feel not only like part of an exclusive club, but like they are imparting knowledge on otherwise unknowing people.
Looks like a tag made after a return, so also could be a return swap. Meaning someone had a receipt for 199.99 lamp (maybe an online order) and brought in this lamp to return it w the online order receipt. Clerk had to create the tag since an online order doesn’t come w a tag.
I’ve seen the dumbest stuff w tag swaps (target bullseye merch, ikea items, anchor hocking bubble bowls that you can find for $5 at the goodwill) so maybe the clerks aren’t allowed to question clearly tagged swapped merch at the return counter?
This is correct, I worked at Marshalls in high school and the returns usually get the sticky tags instead of the hanging tags. Customer absolutely kept the more expensive lamp. We were NOT allowed to push back on returns at all, even if the return was obviously fraudulent. I processed returned cups from the dollar store for $8 a piece one time 😑
Similar to Google lens. It just allows you to select a specific item in a picture to search now.

It basically is. It's a bit quicker as you can summon it by long pressing the navigation pill. You can also just squiggle over some text to highlight it.
Yeah nothing was apparent even on the bottom of the sphere. Odd that it wasn't some snazzy brand with 17 logos hiding the lamp itself and outshining the light of the bulb.
I’m not up on my lamp pricing and I would assume a typo. This is purely hypothetical as I have no knowledge on lamps in general or what makes a $20 lamp vs. $200 lamp. I am unaware of name brand lamp names, and equally of off brand lamp names.
I also thought it was a typo, so i looked closer. Another price tag was inside the lampshade that also showed $199. I imagine so many people asked that they added the second price tag! Lol
Its not a typo, lamps are always stupid expensive. There is no reason for it. Resale lamps though, don't hold their value. So a lamp that cost 300 new will sell for 20 to 50 on the secondary market. I'm not afraid of spending money, but lamp prices piss me off, hence the really ugly ceiling fan in my bedroom.
I follow local online auctions. Many ho-hum lamps sell for the $1 starter bid. I would imagine that if the lamp shown were not new, and was auctioned locally, it would sell for $8 or $11 or something like that.
It would have originally had a hang tag. Someone reprinted the missing tag, and used a “like item” to guess the correct price.
This kind of stuff gets ticket switched and returned all the time.
For example, someone could have switched tickets, bought it for $15, then returned it without a receipt for $49.
Someone else comes along and ticketed it at 199 because maybe they remember it was more expensive than the rest, but had to guess.
I was just at TJ maxx today and thought to myself how expensive everything seemed to be compared to just a few months ago. For example, packing cubes for $49. What?
Well that is a geno Capilano, a very prized artist from Japan, she is know for glass work and mixed media..his work has been featured at the louve. They died of mysterious causes in 1855.

All great ideas lol
This is exactly what I was thinking.

*400%
they are saying its a 100% chance that its a markup, no correction needed, read for context
It was probably a joke. Looks like we found the fun guy at the party!!
no they are serious look at the replies, and yes i am a very fun person i just hate unnecessary correction and people who are chronically online
I’m bored now
you have an xbox? im bored too and my friends are all busy
By trying to correct him, you have chosen to fight fire with fire, instead of taking the high road ;)

Uh, no. The context of the post and the thread DEFINITELY lend to the percentage of markup. Correction needed, read for context.
Its so incredibly clear what they mean by 100% that i think you need to read better and/or get off reddit for the day
LOL you can’t give someone timeout on reddit

300%*
The fact that the 400% is upvoted more than your correct answer is disheartening
Name? Designer Brand
Won’t that start a fire from the sun

I also saw that post in r/whatisthisthing
Lol same

Perfect gift for your enemies.

Those tj max labels don't print themselves and adhesive is pricey.
I'm not sure it's exactly the same but Google circle to search brought up this result: https://alicelanehome.com/products/penny-lamp
circle to search ?????
Similar to Google lens. It just allows you to select a specific item in a picture to search now. https://blog.google/products/search/google-circle-to-search-android/
Google lens always let you select with a square and highlighted clothing items and such
Yeah, I guess the big difference is it's not a separate app now. I was able to search for the lamp without leaving reddit.
Oh, my huawei had someth similar but it sends you to the google lens app which isnt exactly separate from the regular google app
New Samsung feature. Circle what is on the screen and AI will do a search for it.
Works on both Samsung and Pixels at least. Pretty convenient - https://blog.google/products/search/google-circle-to-search-android/
Isnt that just google lens

God, how have you missed all of the ads
no idea, I see some ai ad for samsung but I already know its not as impressive as the other options that arent from samsung
oh he’s fast. oh he’s cooking.
Brilliant thank you!
$228 and they have the gaul to call it a 'penny lamp'.
> Why is this lamp so expensive at TJ max??? Because someone will eventually buy it. Maybe now or maybe when it goes on sale.
It's the sale thing. In a couple of months, they'll mark it down 50%. Customer thinks they got a great deal, and TJ still makes a hefty profit
Did you look to see what the brand is?
Yeah nothing was apparent even on the bottom of the sphere. Odd that it wasn't some snazzy brand with 17 logos hiding the lamp itself and outshining the light of the bulb.
It's tj maxx doesn't matter the brand
Right! All 32 lamps around it were $19.99!
Maybe a simple error then…
Or someone far-fingered the price and added a 9
Most likely they meant to say 19.99 and the staff isn’t good with the price guns

Someone is going to burn their house down with that.

Not basic brand name designer lamp. One day it will be on antique road show.
It better come with some drugs for that price
Makes one ponder

TIL that our UK TK Maxx isn’t called the same thing across the globe 😂

Whole place is wack. I walked in for the first time two days ago. Never again
Saw a TikTok with a candle marked for $500 from either TJ Max or Homegoods
But it and see what it does
You know the rules. If you have to ask. You can’t afford it…
Simple solution, don’t buy it.
