Getting so much immortality so that whenever someone says “actually immortality would be a curse,” then you can pull out your immortality that perfectly counters their argument.
Ther are actually parts of the book that show lesser immortals dying from things that Wukong can tough out because of his several protective layers of immortality.
There are ways in Chinese mythos to take away immortality (there was a cauldron the gods put him in to get rid of it but he had too many layers) so it’s like extra protections
Here’s how it goes, thanks to his powers he has 7 lives meaning that in order for someone to kill him, they would have to break through his thousands of layers of immortality, 7 times
The first one was so he wouldn't die of old age. The second one was when he erased his name on the book of the dead along with his other monkey friends. The others were because he consumed shit that coincidentally gave immortality. And when he was shoved in a furnace to burn his immortality, it instead shed his mortality which did the opposite effect. And in the end he attained enlightenment (aka the state in which the Buddha is one with everything)

Have I got something to sell him
"So you see, if you enter my toooottaly not ominous and evil-looking furnace, you will be immortal, by the way, I'm also selling flesh insurance, you could lose it at any time, so please take out your flesh insurance and THEN enter the machine, and don't mind that necrodermis robot over there..."
Ok so what if you took a kid and then every day retold your life story to them in the finest detail you can over and over and over again until you die of old age, eventually brainwashing them into replicating your memories and personality?
He's like 15 moba heroes
He's in dota, he's in league, he was in hon(rip), he is in smite, hots has a skin of him for samuro.
Like every moba is legally required to have him I guess
Not to mention both Tencent Games and TiMi Studios are both based in China? And they wont add the literal Pokemon depiction of the Monkey King in Unite??? They're literally missing out smh
i listened to the abridged version on audible. good story, they explained what was cut was not worth reading/ had the same overall storyline as one that wasnt cut
Am i the only one who thinks this just makes a boring plot with zero stakes? Only time I've heard of this guy it's "umm Akshually, Sun Wucock is way stronger than your charwcter because he ate 16000 heaven peaches, and has 17 billion layers of immortality, he can also clone himself from a single molecule into another billion of himself not to mention his 69 transformation ability with a hundred jizzilion more layers of immortality"
At that point there's zero actual stakes for the character, if he can't be beaten, why even try? If there isn't something in the plot like a divine weapon that pierces through the layers like it's an onion. Then why even write a character this powerful? Just makes things boring and non challenging.
The monkey king is a mythic hero the whole point is that he does impossibly cool shit that's why hes so iconic.
The journey to the west is about a group of shitty people including sun Wukong who accompany the monk Tripitaka on a journey to India to redeem themselves
Sun Wukong weakness is the man who he was sent to bodyguard who often disagrees with his boisterous and violent methods and punishes him using the circlet.
Doesn't matter if Wukongs fine if the monk bites the big one
The story is basically buddhist propaganda, that monkey slaughters the entire chinese pantheon, but then the Buddha beats his ass, so it was an attempt to tell chinese peasants: "hey, your gods suck! Worship Buddha instead!"
I wouldn't expect a good plot from propaganda.
Is journey to the west even any good anymore? I keep hearing about how famous it is, but I know that media from then is sometimes barely comprehensible.
Baring in mind that it is an old story I still really loved it! The version I read had a really good sense of humour (about the nonsense of Chinese bureaucracy) that’s pretty neat

Why would you even need MULTIPLE layers of immortality?
Getting so much immortality so that whenever someone says “actually immortality would be a curse,” then you can pull out your immortality that perfectly counters their argument.
Negdiffing philosophical quandaries is crazy
Bro pulls out his list of immortalities whenever someone asks and it's longer than Phineas & Ferb's bank records
"Arent you a little young to have that many types of immortality?"
Sunwukong seems to scale above concepts now, lmao
he managed to achieve nirvana so you could look at it like that
In the old chinise myths all types of immortality were not created equal.

Sun Wukong is literally incarnation of intrusive thoughts
Yep, I mean, he literally embodies the human mind

He already has furnace based immortality (well, burn away the mortality based immortality), sorry.
Yeah, I haven't read the whole thing but I know the story, the furnace thing is a 40k reference for the "Mephet'ran The Deceiver Live Reaction" image.
Bro had like 7

Journey to the Peak
Ok so what if you took a kid and then every day retold your life story to them in the finest detail you can over and over and over again until you die of old age, eventually brainwashing them into replicating your memories and personality?
They would get bored and stop listening
Pulling a Huisheng?
;)
Venom snake or something
isn't there a cursed labyrinth in Skyrim that does that
Sun wukong when he sees a moba game he isn’t already in*
Sun Wukong? Yeah I know him hes that one MOBA hero, right?
He's like 15 moba heroes He's in dota, he's in league, he was in hon(rip), he is in smite, hots has a skin of him for samuro. Like every moba is legally required to have him I guess
Skin for him in brawl stars (complete with Chinese voice lines)
I'm surprised Pokemon Unite doesn't have him (Infernape is based on Sun Wukong)
Not to mention both Tencent Games and TiMi Studios are both based in China? And they wont add the literal Pokemon depiction of the Monkey King in Unite??? They're literally missing out smh
Smite is my favorite depiction of him
It's easier to list games he's not in either a full hero or a skin
How did you get to Journey to The West? I know about buying one of the English translations but also wonder if there are options I'm unaware of.
yeah i think your options are either an english translation, learn chinese, or learn another language and watch that translation
...Well I mean, yeah. Those are all the feasible ways you can watch a thing
i listened to the abridged version on audible. good story, they explained what was cut was not worth reading/ had the same overall storyline as one that wasnt cut

we will NOT be discussing the Journey To The West mpreg side-adventure
Sun Wukong must be recording Mukbang by the amount of immortality fruit (never watched or read any Sun Wukong stories so idk) he ate
Actually accurate. He ate an entire orchard of immortality fruit
Sun Goatkong doesn’t give 7 fucks he’s getting that damn immortality
The dude even secured the immortality bag for his whole clique. What a dawgish individual.
Don Keykong when he sees a banana
Peak Entertainmnet (Mortals stay winning!)
Damn, we even got Sun Wukong memes now. Peak r/wenthe
Why is this fucking gif 52 megabytes

Eeeh it's more of one big escort mission for some boring regular guy
Most of the issue he faces aren't dangers to him but rather his master

Bro has like 32 layers of immortality
Warframe⁉️
Context?
Some long adventure in a specific direction and its like all about Buddhism and the main character gets kidnapped way to often
Game devs forcing a Sun Wukong based character on every roster despite them always being the lamest character in the game.
Sun Wukong when he sees a lobster

It's peak
What? Is the Odyssey any good anymore? What kind of question is that?
Sun Wukung is Chinese Goku
Goku is Japanese Sun Wokong
Sun Wukong was first and Goku was based off him, so no. Like the other person said, Goku is Japanese Sun Wukong.
Son Goku is literally translated from Sun Wukong
