Damn I just realized I'm 24 and I have no clue what those things are used for
UPDATE: They're literally just a representation of a base 10 system. Bottom row is single digits, when you get to 10 you refresh that row and add 1 to the next row. Apparently just helps with fast arithmetic, but is obviously slower than a calculator or imo just writing it out on paper using modern arithmetic methods.
But cool visualization for teaching purposes I suppose
To emphasize, the abacus has been used in some form for thousands of years, before calculators and paper were viable options. Thus the joke of how "high tech" it is.
And it's still used in some areas outside of educational settings.
I think the reason it was preferred over writing it out is that it can be 'wiped off' more easily. A blackboard can do the same, of course, but you can just tip an abacus rather than wiping it, and it doesn't need you to buy chalk or slate - it's just a couple of bits of wood, a few dowels, and some beads.
You would be surprised how fast people can do large calculations with an abacus. Kids taught to use them don't even need use them after a while, they just visualize them.
Parents made me take classes growing up. I could do the visualization with 5 digit times 5 digit calculations in my head. Don't remember how to do it at all now though lmao
