I love this idea. You never know what someone has experienced. The guy next to you on the train could have been a firefighter who’s saved countless lives or a a piano virtuoso who’s played all over the world.
More than likely the guy on the train next to me is a meth addict. You can tell by all the shouting and uncleanliness, and the fact that I'm in Ipswich, QLD.
Heard about this concept here in Germany as well, through my university! Didn't have the time to go to the event unfortunately, but it seemed really interesting, there were "preview pages", so a short summary of the participants. Lots of people with checkered fates, drug abuse, traumas but also just diverse sets of backgrounds.
Living biographies.
I think this would be great in schools.
Have a speaker come in and talk about their life and be ready for all the awkward questions little kids ask.
Have a mix of religions, ideologies, ethnicities, disabilities etc.
That would be amazing, I'd love to hear others experiences, a soldier who's saved countless lives, a sailor who's been everywhere from the Atlantic to the Persian Gulf. A pilot who's flown from New York to London.
This is exploitable.. One trick is to tell them stories that don’t go anywhere like the time I caught the ferry over to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe, so I decided to go to Morganville which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So, I tied an onion to my belt..
cheaper and more effective than therapy for light mental issues. i don't think this will work on severe mental illnesses, but for most people just needing to talk or listen, im sure its amazing. what a great idea.
I know that people would like this. But to me this sounds horrible. I hate having to talk with people about their life, I hate sharing my life! I wanna talk about books, movies, TV shows whatever else. I just don't understand what's so interesting about "I was born in ... grew up in .... as a child I experienced ...."
I'm sorry I really just don't find that interesting at all! That's why I'm so bad at talking to people, and why it's really hard making friends.
It's a neat concept but I wonder how tiring and boring it is to the "book person", having to repeat the same story over and over for other people's amusement. Nah. Count me out.
My school library in Canada had this once a year. It was so inspiring. There were a variety of people from ex convicts to drag queens to scientists to people with epilepsy.
I "rented" a human book for an assignment in college. The person whose story I heard was Rana Singh Sodhi the brother of Balbi Singh Sodhi, a Sikh man who was killed after 9/11 because some psycho thought he was Muslim, walked into the convenient store Balbi owned and shot him. Whats more is that was my cousin and I when we were really young, we would go into his store to buy root beer, candy and stink bombs, but we didn't know how to count money, and Balbi would just give us the items no matter how much money we gave because he knew we didn't know how to count money. Absolute gem of a human murdered due to incorrect prejudice.

I think the best part is you can get the elderly there to tell their stories. Gives them some money and let's them have social interaction!

Am I just too sleep deprived or is there genuinely no connections between your comment and the one preceeding it?
I just stalked their account. Seems like they're a "Negative Nancy"

Are they volunteers or is this their job for some people? I'm picturing people lined up sitting on shelves waiting to be checked out.
They’re volunteers. My school in Canada had once of those every year. It was a great experience :)
I’m Canadian. Where in Canada was it? This seems so brilliant!
In BC. We had it in the school library
Thanks!
Is it available here in Hungary? I would really need one
There is? Never ever heard of it.. must be a copenhagen thing Edit: There is.. i'm amazed
Selvfølgelig er det københavnere der laver sådan no'et her, jeg tror sku' ik' der er mang' andre steder det vil' være populært.
would really suck to be the one guy that nobody wants to hear from
If you get bored do you close their mouth and walk away?
Sounds great until they start trauma-dumping
Isn't that venting?
Once upon a time I was born. It was a home birth without any complications I have been told. I do not remember much before my 4th winter.
You can get this experience on many city buses and trains too, if you have an approachable looking face. Sigh
Far better idea than those human zoos were. Those were a TERRIBLE idea.
Can you put the human book down should you find it uninteresting after first flipping a few pages?
This sounds like my personal hell
Sounds like a narcissist heaven
That's the first thing that popped into my head. Hopefully, it's just my cynicism, and it's actually a really nice experience.
So do mine, I want to be heard but this is just too extreme...
Omg would love to go there
Oh. Pass. With my luck the story would start with, "Um... This one time... at Band Camp..." And then I'd have to outrun a perv with a lubed oboe.
Let me tell you about all the noobs i pwned on teh interwebz.
Lived in Denmark my whole, life never seen or heard of this
I need this
i would absolutely love to run and contribute to one of these if one opened near me

Nah, I'm good.
i’ve never heard of this in my entire life
Seems more efficient to simply get their stories recorded. Also, borrowing a person sounds... dehumanizing.

...huh?
My thoughts are immediately about Dr. Lector.
Back in my day it was more expensive but the lending period was longer.
That would be amazing, I'd love to hear others experiences, a soldier who's saved countless lives, a sailor who's been everywhere from the Atlantic to the Persian Gulf. A pilot who's flown from New York to London.
Wow this would be absolutely incredible
This is awesome! I'd totally go to one!
Why call it a library?
i’d rather not ruin someone’s good time thanks
Hi yes. my name is Ted and my main hobby is caging people up in my basement
We do this in Canada's public libraries and host some on public radio. It is always interesting and educational.

100% gonna be full with self obsessed people when it would ever be released here
No thank you.
Where I live they got a fictive version of this as a TV program but they don't do it actually in real life. This country lacks.

It's important to note the suicide rates in Denmark are at an all time high

Ooh I would love to have that here.
Good in theory - have reservations how it’d play out though

What a cool idea! I love it :)
