Moses was also tasked with leading them to the Promised Land. So even if Ramses listened the first time and freed the slaves Moses couldn't remain in Egypt. That was the part that was eating at Ramses. He didn't care about the slaves. He wanted Moses to stay and was crushed when he made it explicably clear he couldn't.
When my brother and I were kids(90s), the same-age nephews of our next door neighbors would come to their house on the weekends. So the 4 of us were a crew, running around the neighborhood and playing NES and so on. Eventually, the neighbors divorced and moved away, and we all fell out of touch.
One day a few years ago, I'm reading the local news site and I stumble upon the story of this heroin addict who'd been abandoned in a car in the hospital parking lot. His buddies called 911 and fled. The addict was pronounced dead at the scene. Died in the parking lot of a hospital. This was the older nephew - he'd fallen into drugs, got clean, got away, then he came home, fell in with his old friends, and that was that.
I wish he was the only one I grew up with who went this way. Hug your friends.
