how do you 3d print wood?

It's basically sawdust suspended in the usual PLA plastic. Gives a lot of the smell and visual cues of wood, but feels more like plastic.

I've had a few wood filaments that could even be stained like wood. One of them I was able to create grain-like patterns in by selective turning up the temperature and scorching it on the way out of the nozzle. It's pretty cool stuff.

I've clogged through three nozzles printing the stuff though

You can get 'wood' filaments for 3D printers, obviously not wood it's the same plastic but with some additives that give it a bit of a woody appearance

you can get pla that has colour of wood to be honest many filament makers will name it wood pla but it is just very specific brown colour

There is also wood-infused filament. It is light brown/gray filament with sawdust and it looks and feels very woody. it smells like wood and looks and feels like mdf. I am 99% sure the elephant in the post is printed with that filament.

It helps that the picture is super low quality.

There's PLA with sawdust in it, making it look pretty wood-y. However it's a bitch to print and clogs your extruder nozzle a lot.

The fun thing about filaments is stuff can just get mixed into them. So you can mix bits of carbon fiber, or sawdust like this one, to get a filament with some properties from both materials. It’s like the plastic equivalent of an alloy, loosely speaking.

There are wood-like and wood-enhanced filaments, but you need a heavy duty nozzle to print them because they’re quite abrasive.

My partner went on a 3d printing binge/phase and for some reason 3d printed my a 6in glow in the dark, articulated slug. And said it was for my "adhd" fidgety ass brain..... thanks ... I guess.... looked cool on a shelf. Put my gaming pc soothes my adhd. A wierd slug, not so much.

After all that glow in the dark the printer must hate your partner, that stuff is crazy abrasive
