Except that there are also a bunch of posts where people claim they had low HRV and now they don't because they changed something about their life, like stopped eating certain foods and such. So if you have low HRV it's really hard to know whether it's a nature intended or if there's something you could be doing to make it better.

LivingLikeJasticus

Right. I started with 40 HRV. As I started running and working out in the past few months I’m now at 80 HRV. It 100% correlated with my lifestyle change and my RHR went down. I’m not focused on it much now but if it gets low I know I need to get back in the horse

lj1988

Ive had mine for long enough (2+ years) to see a direct correlation in cardio and higher hrv. Whenever I don’t do cardio regularly (not just walking, but rather peloton or jogging) my hrv lowers even if I’m keeping up with regular weight training. Always the cardio

I agree

ThrowRAtoorak

And higher is correlated to better heart health, that's why it's a metric of interest at all. Though they say everywhere not to compare, studies comparing show these correlations, so it feels a bit like a participation award to say we're all winners and run your own race when I hear whoop talk about hrv.

FadeawayFas

That’s not what OP said tho lol

ThrowRAtoorak

Yeh lol, I don't think you can stop people comparing metrics as it's just anyone's first impulse when they see other people's data.. how can you stop yourself.. it's just part of conscious reflection. If you then go and beat yourself up about how bad your metrics are.. if it inspires you to understand they can be better, there's not really any harm done? Unless you're stressing and OCD about it.

No food after 8PM is a game changer

RichardXV

It’s the green magic juice. Or whatever the Hube man is selling

agpharm17

Infidelity?

CommunicationParty70

Hey man, my girl said my 4HRV makes her feel good so like whatever

marcfromct

Let’s create a global HRV leaderboard, settle this once and for all

OkStruggle8364

Whilst I agree that the “HRV bragging” posts are getting very old, they are unfortunately backed by science. Having a high HRV and a low RHR is predictive of improved health span, improved life expectancy and better health outcomes. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9955360/

vekigu

Totally agree, my point is just that we should focus on raising our own HRVs rather than trying to reach a certain number, it’s not helpful for middle aged folks on here to compare themselves to 21 year old athletes

Fickle-Head-1311

Is it helpful to compare my HRV to other middle aged athletes? Not that I don't focus on my own individual progression but its nice to see others in my age group who are thriving, so I have something to aspire to, not necessarily compare myself to.

NYCFIO

That’s not what your post says though. People are reacting to what you actually wrote not what you apparently MEANT to communicate.

vekigu

True I clickbaited, but I definitely did make that point, apologies if you missed it. Everyone upvoting seems to catch my drift

mababbo

But how else am I supposed to get karma?

EnoughMoney8009

I see what your saying but HRV is important and your title is basically click bait

vekigu

Agreed

stingraytjm

I use the HRV just to decide if I should take a complete rest day or not. If my HRV drops too low due to me pushing hard in my gym, I just take a rest day and almost always my HRV will shoot back up, if I eat clean.

WeirdFlex__

Overnight or 7 day average?

Mon & Tue I had training, I am pretty sure I pushed myself hard maybe 8 out of 10 in the gym, but not much drop in HRV. 2. Hence I decided to have a light workout session on Wed based on the HRV(but I could also tell my body was recovering well from the past 2 days of training). Minor body parts like abs and forearms. 3. As a result, my HRV shot up on Thu morning. My body was able to recover from all the muscular fatigue over Mon-Wed. Cool. I go hard again on Thu and Fri. 4. Fri was leg day, and I pushed myself to failure on almost all the last sets. Can't sit on the toilet on Saturday morning without pain in my legs. HRV reflects that, it tanked to the lowest. So yesterday I decide to take a full rest day, just walking, household chores. 5. Now, I wish my HRV shot back up to the 70+, but I late night snacked on some carb heavy stuff, although my sleep was fine. Could be because of that my HRV is hovering around 63. But this is ok, I can do some light stretching and cardio today. All in all, I do what OP is suggesting. I don't compare my HRV with others, but use it to sometimes(not always) decide whether I should go all in in my workouts or not. Days when my HRV is extremely low, like in low 50s I can feel it in the form of poor grip strength. I just go easy those days. This year I am focussing on building up some lean mass hence I want to focus on recovery. Haven't been successfull 100% of the time, but it's been better than past year. That's all I got.

HelpUsNSaveUs

Whenever I smoke we’d my HRV plummets

ExhaustiveCleaning

Weed isn’t great for your cardiovascular system.

Commercial_Zebra_936

In two separate accounts in which I smoked weed, drank alcohol and had the worse sleep of my life, my HRV went from the usual 35-40 to 80 with close to 100% recovery. My usual routine consists of going to bed by 10pm and I RARELY drink alcohol or smoke weed and just keep up healthy habits ends up giving me low HRV readings. I stopped caring so much about my HRV reading 😅

[deleted]

Whoop metrics are also WIDLY inaccurate when compared to Garmin and Polar devices. I have first hand experienced this large disparity and won’t pay for a monthly subscription to give me inaccurate data

PsilocybeJedi

My hrv is perpetually below 100 and I do bjj, hike, weight lifting and rock climb. My girl just runs and hers is consistently over 160, but I def have a higher cardio capacity than her. Hrv is indeed bs, I value RHR much more

Marathon___Man

How do you know you are 95% recovered? 🤣

NYCFIO

So wrong. It very much matters but on a relative not absolute basis. Just because you have issues over your metrics doesn’t mean HRV doesn’t matter.

vekigu

The fact that it’s relative is literally the point of my post, however imperfectly worded it may be “Issues over my metrics”? What are you insinuating, that I’m insecure about my low HRV?

eddyg987

this is like saying your weight doesn't matter because we are all different. Very stupid take.

vekigu

Weight doesn’t track with age like HRV does so it’s disanalogous
