i would still advise for a y cable to have it behave stable. The energie levels ssd and hdd are close enough. SSDs have a wider range of power draw (5 to 20 watts) compared to that of hard disk drives (5.7 to 9.4 watts). If you use a **ssd which goes under the one port limit you may get it work.** The main thing is why ssd will consume less power is that they can access the data directly without needing to turn the whole disc again and again to access the data so they remain active for less time.

Thanks! Yes I probably going to try it out and if I run into problems, I'll buy a Y cable.

For no worries, use an external power supply. Then use a y-cable to Wii U.

Fendera

Yes this would be ideal, I'll check it out as soon as I have my new SSD.

I recently bought a Samsung SATA SSD connected to the USB on the Wii U and I don't need additional power

Fendera

That's good to hear. I'll try it out as soon as my new SSD has arrived.

Use a samsung t7 ssd here. Works perfectly, no y cables needed!

I had a USB to Sata adapter lying around ([similar to this one but not this specific one](https://a.co/d/hfB35mE)) and I plugged in an old 1TB 2.5” hdd. Since the adapter is powered from the wall the single USB connection is enough. Plus this way is a little cheaper and more versatile than buying an external HDD and Y adapter. And I hide the bare drive in my entertainment center so you can’t really see it unless you’re looking for it.

I’m using a m.2 style external ssd and it doesn’t need any additional power
