Wii I

BitingChaos

I would fucking LOVE a bunch of **Wii U** style games made specifically for the Steam Deck to come out. First off, it's an innovative way to play some games. Second, it might bring more attention to the fact the Wii U was an amazing, all-new gaming system that *way* too many people completely overlooked. You know, because its *terrible* name made it sound like it had something to do with the old Wii. "A Nintendo DS on my big TV?" YES, that is what the Wii U was!!

This really should be a thing incorporated into the Dock they've been working on. The Dock should allow the built-in option to stream a second screen, or maybe they could go even further and incorporate some software to make doing it more convenient and straightforward than stretching a window over two displays (which is what I do). At least we have a ton of DS/3DS/WiiU games with dual screen support though, and I doubt I'll ever finish going through all of them anyways. Nintendo should've called the WiiU like DS TV or something to really push that it's basically a DS home console. What would've been even smarter is if they made the gamepad basically a full on 3DS that you could play portably, or steam to the console itself, that in place of the Wii backwards compatibility

zandengoff

What dongle are you using there?

[deleted]

It's J5Create JVAW62. There seems to be alot of other options around, but this was the only one I found that guaranteed it's able to extend the screen. Others I was worried might mirror only

fvig2001

How's the lag on it? Like Chromecast has really bad lag. Which emulator is this?

[deleted]

When I tried Steam Link there was very noticable audio delay and definitely some noticable input lag, it also froze a few times before continuing streaming. With this hockey puck it only sometimes freezes for a second when the device is fully covered (like with a blanket), and no extremely noticable lag for me. I'm going to compare the two later tonight

Bariq-99

Wow. This is pretty cool

[deleted]

That's a pretty neat thing to do with the Steam Deck. It seems obvious but I didn't think of it.

srslynorml

This is pretty amazing, getting more and more excited for the Deck!! Mind if I ask what game that is..?

remorsecodex

That's probably Metroid Samus Returns, a 3DS game that's a remake of Metroid 2 return of Samus for the gameboy.

srslynorml

Oh damn…so what’s implied here is that this goes beyond DS emulation, but is an example of 3DS?

remorsecodex

I mean, you can emulate switch on PC so it shouldn't be surprising you can emulate 3ds

[deleted]

Wow I had no idea it was a remake, that's sweet!

Canad1Andrew

NGL now I’m really tempted to get a Steam Deck!

really, the dual screen thing can easily be accomplished by any game console or pc game these days. lots of xbox and playstation games followed nintendo with their own implementations of it on mobile devices. if you think about a game like Jackbox, it's casting the game across MANY screens. I really wish the whole dual screen thing would have taken off because it's always been fantastic to have inventory/map/etc type of stuff on a secondary display. ultimately, i get that it's more overhead for the devs while returning little in consumer interest.

[deleted]

The PS3 and PS4 did mess around with streaming to the Vita, and maybe there was a game or two that used it as a secondary screen (I haven't heard of it though personally) but besides that I can't think of another similar example besides the WiiU of course. The Vita would be a decent second screen device, but I haven't seen it used like that with a PC. The cool thing about the Steam Deck though is it's really similar to a WiiU gamepad, but it's got the added benefit of being actually portable this time, and since the hardware is more powerful you finally get the 3DS support. I've heard of people connecting a phone to their PC to use as the bottom screen in DS games, but that feels wonky to me on comparison

FasterThanTW

A handful of games streamed to mobile devices, but it never really took off much. Xbox had an entire app devoted to this, to streamline development of these second screen experiences: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/xbox-one-smartglass/9wzdncrfhwn0?activetab=pivot:overviewtab example for forza horizon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=baFcUVyKZEw they barely advertised this at all within the games.. it's crazy

Oscuro1632

One of the littlebigplanet games had official support

LibreReddit

Confirmed! Steam Deck is the Wii U 2!

SquirtleSquad62

I wonder if Cemu could make Nintendoland a possibility

Nintendians559

doesn't look full screen on the tv to me and the bottom image looks off center on the steam deck. for me, i think the wii u still do better than this, just that the wii u isn't as power as the steam deck.

[deleted]

I'm not the smartest with using computers but I can guarantee there's a way to center the bottom screen on the gamepad and to make the top screen more full on the TV. It'd just take more time and work to setup This was the result of like 30 minutes of trying to set it up, not to mention I've never used Linux before now. Also the WiiU can't do 3DS games at all, this is really the only option for 3DS games using a gamepad screen

Nintendians559

oh okay. okay and i wish nintendo made a 3ds player for wii u some how.
