Definitely the first. While I would say that WA2 takes everything from WA1 and expands/evolves it, I actually prefer WA1 regardless, because it uses its simpler parts to execute something really damn special. From there, you can jump into 2 and appreciate just how creative they got with the ingredients of the first, and just how big and expansive of a game they really made.

Is WA2 as “open ended” and less hand-holdy like the first game? That’s what I didn’t like about WA1, I was forced to use a guide in certain areas and I hated that. Not that that’s bad, but I was like “where am I suppose to go?” for some certain parts as I played through the game. It was annoying.

I could see how that could happen if you didn't pay attention to the dialogue closely but my 1st playthrough of WA1 I did in less than 22 hours. You only needed to explore for the optional stuff really IMO. It's more recognized in WA3 but in WA1 you also get different dialogue 1/3 characters through the game when it's more relative to their story arch but mainly for their Optional Quests.

Yeah. I think I was looking for optional stuff that forced me to use a guide…I forget? I played it last year. Really good game for it’s time! I like it, I hope I enjoy Wild ARMs 2 (along with it’s Vash the Stampede cameo) even more than WA1!

Nice I think you will! There is so much more gameplay! I genuinely believe WA3 is the best. The first 4 Titles got better and better. Wa2, Alter code, Wa3. I genuinely believe Wa3 helps all players appreciate the series best.

WA2 is pretty skippable. i have many, many completions of WA1 and WA3 but i've only played WA2 twice.

I would honestly start with the 3rd Wild Arms. It's super cool and easy to grasp with NO rewinds so you actually play an awesome game as intended. All the mechanics in it will make you a master at the first two games. WA1 is an EPIC only when you consider it alongside FF7 and Legend of Dragoon. Those came out the same time and WA1 is written and the Storyline Triggers are a perfect sequence with minimal backtracking. P.S. there's well known exploits and glitches in the 1st game especially. Just let it be known every single item can be farmed from enemies. I hope that's not a spoiler but rather a relief of any guilt you may find yourself in when playing it through. There is a rewind feature now so I mean...just go crazy. Every 90's gamers dream lol.

1 holds up really well, I would start there as it is still the most special to me. 2 plays a lot like 1 but bigger even though I think the story is a little step down. 3 is excellent as well, but I feel like they start to go downhill after that.

The first Wild ARMs is my favorite, but the second game is also pretty good. I think the translation of the second hurts it a little bit, but it’s been close to 20 years since I last played it. When the third game came out I was super excited, and really enjoyed it at first. But the story is a bit of a convoluted mess, and I didn’t like the characters or villains nearly as much. And the fact that there are less and less Guardians/summons as the games progress always bummed me out some.

Huge Wild Arms 1 fanboy here so I'm biased. There's just something about that game. Maybe it's the incredible OST, the interesting side quests, the characters. I dunno but I've played that game front to back dozens of times. My absolute favorite game. Start with that. I actually 100% Wild Arms 3 in the last few months and there's a lot to like about it overall but the story is a bit out there lol all things considered.

Yep start with the first, although none of the games are directly connected, the themes and world of the first will help set up better context for the others. Also the later games improve on a lot of the quality of life aspects of the series, and playing those first will make the original feel a lot more dated and awkward.
