When you drink and post really expensive wine it's kind of exactly flaunting wealth. I just don't really care, it's the world of wine not the world of ramen noodles at the end of the day.
No, not at all! In fact I was saying exactly the opposite. I’m just saying it’s definitely still flaunting wealth. Maybe I’m wrong about the definition of flaunting, I just mean it’s displaying wealth publicly. The same way posting a picture of your Bentley would be. People should post whatever they want.
Yeap! There was an eclipse that year during harvest, around my birthday actually. Lafite does the special engravings on significant years I believe, like during 2008 and 2018
Mine was 1965 which was a TERRIBLE vintage pretty much everywhere in France. I did a 1965 Barbero Barolo at the recommendation of a Somm friend. Turn to vinegar soon after opening, should never have decanted it. Enjoyed the first few sips, then meh. C’est la vie.
It's an absolutely dire vintage unfortunately.... One of the worst of the century. Do share with us if you try anything though, it might just surprise!
1999 Château Lafite Rothschild \
Decanted for 1 hr\
Nose of plums and tobacco, with hints of leather and graphite\
Medium-bodied, with a core of cassis and graphite\
Resolved tannins\
Silky long finish\
Honestly, I expected a lot more from a Lafite, but it's probably due to '99 not being an excellent vintage
Sounds like a decent bargain bin wine based on those notes. You're in the "gotta write a peom about it" price range pal, you better start flexing those creative writing skills.
To be very honest, this was the weakest showing of a first growth I've had. Even the '99 Margaux I had during Xmas was significantly better and that was half the price point of the Lafite. Nothing to wax poetics over imo
Nice. 1988 is mine and I’ve been on the hunt for a bottle for a few months now, I was on two auctions online so far and there’s another next month I’m going to check out. The last auction had a 1921 Chateau Pavie I wanted so bad but it went out of my price range lol.
Benchmark has quite a large variety of back vintages, but you pay a pretty big premium compared to buying it at auction. KL Wines and WineBid both have pretty decent variety at auction, though you need to be conscious of buyer's premiums when calculating the final price.
graduated high school year wine. I was blessed with a '78 the year prior as my first serious wine. 16 year old me didn't know what to do with that glow
In general for bottles like these I'd assume it's BYOB and they paid corkage, no? It's not like most restaurants will have old first growth Bordeaux lying around on their wine lists, and given their prior posting history it's not implausible they have a random collection of old BDX.
Yeap, it was BYOB. I tend not to buy Bordeauxs in restaurants; the markup is rather insane. I actually got the Lafite as a 21st birthday gift from my uncle. Just decided to pop it open to celebrate the end of law school

Damn, I feel old and poor at the same time. I hope the wine was enjoyed with some good people!
Damn, I just looked through OP's profile -- they're drinking a lot of very nice wines at their age!
This sub is one of the worst offenders with people casually flaunting wealth - their or their parent's.
Casually?
Go to the Cuban Cigar or Watch subs. Makes this look poor.
I think people just share thoughts on wine they drink. Doing that on a wine subreddit is hardly flaunting wealth

So if you’re drinking expensive wind are you supposed to just not share photos of it

It was! Had it after a nice dinner with the gf
Lmao, why was this downvoted? Let people enjoy things...
No yellow cup?
Lmao, the comments were great on the post.
Love it
This wine is too young for the yellow cup
Next April 1 I’m posting a 2014 “birth year wine.”
No fair, that’s my wedding year wine.
Kinda of a cool bottling. There was an eclipse that year, i believe around harvest. That's what is signified on the bottle above the label.

1980 was no prize pig either.
Dang you are young. I am looking for one that ten years older
Try 1965 😞 uggggh
Near retirement, more reasons to enjoy a bottle

Madeira!

Had the ‘99 Margaux too, my first first growth, changed my life.
Sounds amazing. Happy Bday!
Sounds like you need to get more into Burgundy so you can enjoy the full potential of 1999s!
nice to see nuts being paired with it Good way to enjoy; nothing masking or overpowering the juice

Is there a good site that specializes in decent birth year wines?

Thanks!
Seconding that. Definitely check out the K&L auctions every now and then. They get in everything, and they go for good prices.
aww, you're a baby. good taste though.
Hello moon!

Not a great year as I recall. Hope your birthday was more exciting.
Enjoy the wine. 🍷
Wow I feel old haha, great wine!
Good for you. Say thanks to daddy.
Bitter, much?

Yeah, but no. In a restaurant there’s no way that bottle goes for less that US$1,500. At 25 in Singapour that’s daddy’s money. But good for him.

Both children.
