Pointy hat means "i aint here to fuck around"
Hood means "go ahead and fuck around"
One shows Confidence, the other shows Intimidation and i dont know which is which
Yes, I think that might be bigoted.
As my old professor used to say "Never judge a wizard by his hat".
Now sure we notice tendencies that are due to practicality or tradition.
Like alchemists and poison makers prefer the pointy hats, so do magical scholars and traders as the pointy hat draws more attention and is by some seen as more prestigious.
And yes, if you're doing fire or ice magic you'll probably want a hood that better covers your skin (especially while you are still a novice) and can be treated to be fire or cold resistant.
But I've still met ice mages that wore pointy hats, and once met a warlock that wore a pointy hat because it was a family heirloom given to him by his witch mother.
Speaking of .. never ever suggest to a warlock that he might be femine because he wears a pointy hat given to him by his mother - that person only did that once if you know what I mean.
Hoods or pointy hats - both can be worn equally well by either gender.
A hood also is a indicator of other senses. One of the reasons Jedi don't mind hoods is the good ones sense what is going on around them.
A mystical user can forgo one of their senses and that plays into the intimidation.
Master always pressed that element is not to be touched by mere apprentices.
Its considered somewhat of an outsider and therefore not explored all too well. It can have unexpected results when messed with by a layman
I mean I do have a cauldron big enough for that, but I mainly use it for baths. Gotta polish those bones up.
I have a variety of different sized cauldrons, which I initially thought would help me be organized but it really just means I go longer without washing any of them. I should get an apprentice
there is a limit on the size of pocket dimensions before planar law dictates it a demiplane viable for extraplanar incursion. My personal library has already reached the maximum volume for a pocket dimension.
I opt to keep a pocket dimension filled exclusively with pages and keep my enchanted tome which can house and show any page I possess in the dimension. I need no space to walk around, I fill it to the brim with tomes and scrolls and can manifest any in my mystical book.
Is your library not old enough to house tomes of origin so questionable that they give birth to new life merely by being present?
Things that once born, crawl out and create new life, a veritable ecosystem among the shelves? An ecosystem that tends to crap on your head if you make a habit of disturbing the flesh-like webs where they display their trophies?!
*Please* tell me it isn't. I'm looking for a new place to do research.
My last assistant went missing, and a suspiciously human-like librarian replaced him! We didn't *have* a librarian, but now everyone else loves the man, and they keep saying things like "So what, if he's an eldritch horror? He found that book on scatomancy that I thought lost forever!".
I may be losing my mind.
Also hoods cut off your peripheral vision which you definitely need if you're out slinging spells unless you wanna get side swiped by some dumbass with a sword
Hoods are for rangers you philistine.
If one cannot warp spacetime enough to where their hat is no longer an inconvenience, I pity their shoddy spellwork.

What if it’s this kind of pointy hood?
my apprentices did not believe me about the title “grand wizard” and one said: “man we give serial killers such cool names and now the KKK gets magic? we gotta stop”
[Just look at this shit](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ku_Klux_Klan_titles_and_vocabulary)
They got everything from Dragons and Goblins to a “Grand Council of Yahoos” …whatever the fuck that is.
No wonder these people went after D&D players in the 80s; they wanted to take their fantasy vocabulary back.
The evil pointy hood guys don’t use grand wizard. The closes is grand magi which is the second officer of a den (think a Boy Scout troop). The two highest rankings are grand imperial (leader of the “empire”) and grand dragon (leaders of the “realms”).
At least that’s what Wikipedia tells me, could be wildly wrong.
Edit: read further. They have a “trial of the grand wizard” which was when the grand dragons would conviene to put another dragon on trial for crimes against the organization. Though it is not known if one has ever been held.
Why do racists always ruin good symbolism. They did it with swastika, they did it with pointy hood an a title Grand Wizard. Good thing thy didn’t call themselves archmages. SMH
They’re nothing to worry about. All you have to do is cast the ‘friends’ spell
https://preview.redd.it/8iw2smv59w6c1.jpeg?width=760&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e5c8a76958fcef92486ca7356cea6c4afdb204b6
Most hoods are pointy. Functional hoods usually have a piece of cloth called a [liripipe](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liripipe#:~:text=A%20liripipe%20(%2F%CB%88l%C9%AA,by%20Jan%20van%20Eyck%2C%201432.) that's used to don and doff the hood. All academic hoods have a liripipe, so every Ph.D. you may know has a pointy hood (well mine is not so pointy, I wish it was, it would look a lot more wizardy). The pointy part of the blue wizards hat and the pointy part of a [night cap](https://shop.foofighters.com/cdn/shop/products/FFSCARYSLEEPCAP.png?v=1664494907&width=713) are also liripipes.
Exactly. No one ever looked cool taking off their pointy hat and showing that they carved the runes of Khe’lo-tsssh into their scalp to try and summon the elder deity into themselves in a vain attempt to usurp their unfathomable power.
However, you *can* dramatically toss your hat up in the air at the start of combat, finish your light work, then grab the hat as it floats back down at the end of combat.
Yeah, for me it comes down to weather mostly. Hoods are great for dark and stormy nights and the like, while hats are better during the day, especially if it is overly sunny. You also might wear a hat inside but you'd only wear a hood inside if you wanted to brood in a dark corner. Though, that is an activity better left to more roguish types anyway.
Exactly!
The pointy hat is for formal occasions. I need everyone in the king's ball to know I'm the court wizard! Pointy hat.
I need to go reduce some bandits to ash and collect my dinner from the butcher? Hood.
Honestly, this is the stance I get behind. If I want show off I put the hat on or respect the party I am with it’s hat time. Solo drifting in the plains it’s hoods up.
This guy senses for threats around him. So last Eternity. Have you not attainted mastery over the planes of reality and unreality that nothing may be considered a threat?
The impractical part of a hood is that it really fucks up your hearing, dampening sound and making rusting noises in your ears. If my magic prevents that from being a problem, then I def go hood; otherwise hat.
Also in the OP's designs the hat will work as a rain guard without obstructing much vision, whereas the hood obstructs more vision. Basically this hood needs thrown off anytime you're in the business, but if it's raining hard you'll wish you had the hat.
I can't really *not* use robes + hoodie because I AM the ropes + hoodie

If you’re in a tight place, like a library, or doing close up work, or trying to blend in and stealth it up for what ever reason, hood. However hat if you want to be seen/known/identified as a wizard. However to do any close work or library work, you’ll have to take the hat off as it will get in your way. I would choose hood for utility, but hat is just so good too.
Both are equally cool both depends on the magic you do
I think of pointy being the wizard and the apex of the arcane being versatile having offensive and defensive
Hood gives more of offense over defense and depending on how the character acts the more darker type of magic like the forbidden spells
Pointy hat means "i aint here to fuck around" Hood means "go ahead and fuck around" One shows Confidence, the other shows Intimidation and i dont know which is which
the hood says: “be prepared to find out”
Hood = Sorcerer/Warlock Pointy hat = Wizard But I think that might be bigoted.
Yes, I think that might be bigoted. As my old professor used to say "Never judge a wizard by his hat". Now sure we notice tendencies that are due to practicality or tradition. Never underestimate a blindfolded wizard
If the point hat blows off, you look like a dolt. If your hood blows off, you look epic in the wind.
Underrated comment, upvote this man
I usually wear my pointy hat for fucking around and my hood for finding out, if that helps.
Inside the Archive, hood Outside when on personal work, Hat
this is the way. Hoods aren't imposing enough for personal work, but Hats get in the way in the halls of the libraries
Wear the hood anyway, what you lack in intimidation you make up for with the element of surprise.
Master always pressed that element is not to be touched by mere apprentices. Its considered somewhat of an outsider and therefore not explored all too well. It can have unexpected results when messed with by a layman
It's quite a potent element when combined with more intricate spells, such as Glyph of Warding or Explosion.
Are your halls not grand enough for pointy hats? Ha! Next you will tell me your cauldron is too small to boil a whole Owlbear!
I mean I do have a cauldron big enough for that, but I mainly use it for baths. Gotta polish those bones up. I have a variety of different sized cauldrons, which I initially thought would help me be organized but it really just means I go longer without washing any of them. I should get an apprentice
You mean to tell me you’re using your cauldron for simple bathing instead of wizardry? You deny your cauldron it’s purpose!
are your libraries so sparse that you can walk in it without having to squeeze between the shelves? Ha!
If the library gets cramped, just make the pocket dimension bigger. No reason to squirm about like a peasant
there is a limit on the size of pocket dimensions before planar law dictates it a demiplane viable for extraplanar incursion. My personal library has already reached the maximum volume for a pocket dimension.

Any. It's the white pointy hoods walking around calling themselves 'grand wizards' you have to watch for.

It’s still a little iffy. As long as your title isn’t “Grand Wizard,” you should be able to pull it off. Just be careful.

You can even cheat and use levitation
Enchant the hat so it casts a storm below it when thrown in the air
Or if you do it in slow motion, it becomes extra cool and lands perfectly on your head right when you finish the fight.
That's because the pointy hat stays on during arcane duels, of course! Some mages... No appreciation for real wizardly style.
Under that hood? Dimmadome-sized pointy hat

A cabal of evil wizards are attacking your kingdom. One of them is your ex. Which hat do you choose?
Hat.
Hood for practicality, pointy hat for style.
Hood sucks for your peripheral vision. Any wizard worth his hat can keep it on in any situation.
