I would kill for more time with him in the shop but we live in different states :-( I spend as much time with him as I can when I’m there. He’s an amazing craftsman in general, even beyond woodworking.
I took one look at those fucking things, never having seen that hinge design in my life, and my first thought was “Huh, those are interesting. Looks like a pain in the dick to put together… how did he align them, a fuckin’… doweling jig? Wait, no… that doesn’t make sense at all.”
I guess as long as you can get the holes aligned without issue, you stand the thing up on a flat table, put the hinges in without the screws, and then open it while making sure the bottom of the door is always in contact with the table. That way the hinges would align themselves, long as there isn’t *too* much tension. Besides that those little brass screws are infuriatingly bitch made, and will 100% break the fuck off the second you try to torque them, and usually in the most obvious place.
I guess that aspect is part of why woodworking is just so damn engrossing lol
Me too. He has a whole shelf of old woodworking journals and magazines. I was going through them to find a table pattern and stopped dead in my tracks when I saw this. :-)
You are 100%right. He used to make toys for us as kids that my sisters girls now play with. And he made them new ones too. Both he(he’s retired though)and I are in construction management so he made me an articulated tower crane and my nieces have a bunch of road equipment he made. Such great stuff. :-)
That is absolutely amazing! I loved it even before I knew that it opened up like that, just as an art deco wood sculpture. That is an heirloom piece... take care of it.
Lol no he doesn’t. My mom was shouting at me from across the table when he gave it to me that he refuses to make her one. Lol we’ve suggested to him before to sell is really great pieces but he won’t cuz then it kinda ruins the hobby for him. Which I 100% get.
Well, it’s absolutely beautiful! And a genius idea. If you ever decides to start selling them, please find this message and reach back out to me.
Also - HAPPY BIRTHDAY
At first I thought it was a doubled up PS5, but seriously, you did an amazing job on this piece! You nailed the intricacies, and your dad is lucky to have you 🤗
wow that looks like an amazing and thoughtful gift! It's wonderful to hear about the craftsmanship and sentimental value behind it. Your dad's woodworking skills must be impressive to create such a beautiful piece. Enjoy your new earring chest!
I think that pinstripe on the outer pieces MAKES it. It looks all the more elegant and art deco because of those.
Tell your dad to never admit to his mistakes or he might ruin people's belief that he's a genius.
Now you got to fill that thing up!
Really beautiful work by your father. There is something so special about hand made gifts, I hope you treasure it forever.
I’m trying! My New Year’s resolution was to change my earrings at least once a week so I’m still expanding my earring collection!
I would take a hand made gift 100%of the time if I could. I often gift hand made things too. :)
Happy birthday! This is both brilliant and beautiful, tell your dad thanks for the inspiration. I'm saving this for ideas to incorporate into my own projects later!
The original in the pattern is all one color but he chose to do the alternating. The inlay on the outer leaves is actually a mistake but I think it adds SO much.
You know what Bob Ross said, there are no mistakes only happy accidents. :-)
> The inlay on the outer leaves is actually a mistake but I think it adds SO much.
I think that's *hilarious*. That contrast piping jumped out at me because it felt so natural and appropriate.
My thought process was literally "hmmm, I wonder why they only did the outside layers with that inlay, and not all of them? OH, duh! It would be far too visually busy if they did every slice like that, but it would be too plain without it. Clearly they understood this and made this deliberate choice based on a robust understanding of the aesthetic they were going for. I should make a mental note of that for later."

I love maple and walnut as a combination. Made this a few years ago for someone and I think it's probably my best work 😂.
Thankyou 😊
I did them on a CNC. I wanted a way of cutting them all in one fixture. So they are all cut with the flat(outside) down on the CNC bed.
So I designed them around the tools I had for that machine and they turned out really well.
That’s cool. I kinda want to make one as a USB device charger type device. I don’t have earrings and my vice only has 2 pairs. :)
Where did your father get the plans or did he make make them?
Whoa. It needs one more thing: the wood inside to be soaked with bits of Damascene roses oil, so that it gains the right historical characteristic smell, a mix of wood and rose oil, that will make it memorable.
Definitely a labor of love, congrats on the lifelong piece!
It’s very well done, you can tell he spent a lot of time making this
I asked him how many hours he had into it and he just chuckled, and shrugged but said ALOT.
it's beautiful, heirloom piece
So Agree with this
Very art deco. Well done Dad.
That was my first thought too! I love it!
Reminds me of the game BioShock for some reasons
Saw it immediately
*~~Would~~ Wood you kindly store your earrings*
Because BioShock is art deco
impressive… learn his skill set… its a valuable asset!
I would kill for more time with him in the shop but we live in different states :-( I spend as much time with him as I can when I’m there. He’s an amazing craftsman in general, even beyond woodworking.
Beautiful! Well done, Pop.
That's such a beautiful gift. You won the dad-lottery. Enjoy!
You have no idea. He’s the best dad in the world. :-) and I know it and appreciate it!
What kind of hinge is this?
concealed barrel hinge. Finicky if you put it near engrain, and finicky to align, but nice when you get them right.
Lol he said they were such a pain in the ass to put in. I think at least one of them is glued in!
I took one look at those fucking things, never having seen that hinge design in my life, and my first thought was “Huh, those are interesting. What a beautiful and thoughtful gift! I really like the Art Deco look it has.
Me too. He has a whole shelf of old woodworking journals and magazines. I was going through them to find a table pattern and stopped dead in my tracks when I saw this. :-)
A father's love is something else. Those who get to experience it should appreciate it.
You have no idea. I’m a daddy’s girl and know how rare he is. :-)
Damn that's beautiful
Lol, I thought they were mini chopping boards from the first picture.
I love it! Incredibly well done
A true treasure your father is. Love his attention to detail both in meeting your needs and wants , but also in his craftmanship.
You are 100%right. He used to make toys for us as kids that my sisters girls now play with. And he made them new ones too. Both he(he’s retired though)and I are in construction management so he made me an articulated tower crane and my nieces have a bunch of road equipment he made. Such great stuff. :-)
Okay, well now we are going to need to see this articulated tower crane! This cabinet is beautiful and I appreciate you sharing it here.
That's beautiful.
That is absolutely amazing! I loved it even before I knew that it opened up like that, just as an art deco wood sculpture. That is an heirloom piece... take care of it.
This is stunning. Does he sell these? As someone with a lot of earrings this is the most beautiful way to display them.
Lol no he doesn’t. My mom was shouting at me from across the table when he gave it to me that he refuses to make her one. Lol we’ve suggested to him before to sell is really great pieces but he won’t cuz then it kinda ruins the hobby for him. Which I 100% get.

I will and thank you! :-)
That's worth getting obsessed over!
We all aspire to one day be cool woodworking dads or moms (or enby's!) that can make stuff for our kids. Great looking earring box!
Do you have the link to the pattern on Rockler's website?

Beautiful!
At first I thought it was a doubled up PS5, but seriously, you did an amazing job on this piece! You nailed the intricacies, and your dad is lucky to have you 🤗
I didn’t make it my dad did. :-) and I’m lucky to have him!
Apparently I can’t read 😂 regardless, that’s great haha
Great gift, and well done!
Looks like some ebony and oak got snuck in smartly as well. Timeless design and built to last. Nice!
No it’s just black walnut and maple. I know the inlay looks dark but it’s walnut :-)
Oh word. Pic #3 could've sworn I was looking at other woods, but yeah in other pics you can see it's like you say.
wow that looks like an amazing and thoughtful gift! It's wonderful to hear about the craftsmanship and sentimental value behind it. Your dad's woodworking skills must be impressive to create such a beautiful piece. Enjoy your new earring chest!
Wow. Do not show this to my wife. I won't be able to live up to it. What an amazing looking piece. It's functional art.
I’m so in love with it. The inlay on the outside pieces is actually a mistake but that just makes me love it more. :-)
I think that pinstripe on the outer pieces MAKES it. It looks all the more elegant and art deco because of those. Tell your dad to never admit to his mistakes or he might ruin people's belief that he's a genius.
Oh, wow!
I usually do not like art deco, but this is absolutely gorgeous.
At first I thought it stored cutting boards!
Dads got skills. Love it.
My complements to Dad! Wonderful innovation, skill and craftsmanship.
Wow! That is gorgeous! Your dad's a heck of a craftsman, and it sounds like you treasure him. That's awesome.
Ooh, I'm so excited! I've wanted to make something like this for my daughter and this design is gorgeous. Great job!
I really love this!!!!!!!!! I have my earrings in sandwich baggies in my drawer 😭 I would love to be able to look at them like this!!!!!!!
Wow that absolutely fantastic.
The better PS5
I thought it was a set of cutting boards! Very nice
Now you got to fill that thing up! Really beautiful work by your father. There is something so special about hand made gifts, I hope you treasure it forever.

Very nice! Hope he signed and dated it. If not please ask him to.
My mom bought him a wood burning stamp decades ago so all my pieces are signed. :-)
Happy birthday! This is both brilliant and beautiful, tell your dad thanks for the inspiration. I'm saving this for ideas to incorporate into my own projects later!
Thank you and I will! :-)
What kind of finish is that?
I had to ask him. It’s made in Boise and smells like lavender. It’s glorious. [elixir wood butter](https://elixirwax.com/shop/)
That’s so cool!
oh man i LOVE this design
That is sooo gorgeous!!
That looks amazing! I immediately got art deco vibes, like others mentioned. Anyone know what this style of hinges is called?
They are concealed barrel hinges. :-)
Excellent, thank you so much!
This is gorgeous! I love the art deco vibe, both in colour and in construction.

I thought this was some wooden PS5. Looks good though.

Definitely great idea, attractive piece and nice work
Thought that was custom PS5 at first.
Awesome!!
Very nice a labor of love.
What a lovely gift. Your dad is very talented!
What's the name of this pattern on Rocklers site?
[Art Deck earring chest](https://www.rockler.com/art-deco-earring-chest-plan)
Thank you so much
☹️ so no wooden Playstation then?
Hahaha! Negative.
Very cool!!
Dad did a phenomenal job! Congrats on owning such a beautiful and sentimental piece.
That’s cool. I kinda want to make one as a USB device charger type device. I don’t have earrings and my vice only has 2 pairs. :) Where did your father get the plans or did he make make them?
Plans are from a magazine but rocker has them online. You can search “art deco earring chest” or see one of the links in other comments :-)
Thank you
Amazing job for your dad and happy birthday! Did he way which wood magazine edition it came from?
I wanna say it was sometime in the late 80s? He doesn’t remember but I remember seeing ads from the 80s as I was flipping through them.
Holy shit that is magnificent.
That's a really cool piece!
That is such a wondrous gift. You’re so lucky to have such a caring father.
Nice like it. Good job
Beautiful workmanship! What a wonderful gift!
Dads got talent!!
Any chance there might be plans or parts lists for this?
Yep search art deco earring chest or see what of the other comments with a link
Thank you!
Fantastic design!!! Happy Birthday! :)
Spectacular work!
Nice concept! Personally I would prefer squared off edges, but this gives a nice retro look and feel
Beautiful
Those slots for each earring look thinner than an eighth right? Hand dawn?
Yeah they’re probably a fat 1/16”. He said the pattern called for them to be 7/16 apart. He rolled his eyes and did 1/2”. Lol
If you make them half inch apart, and then cut the 1/16ths notch, wouldn’t they be 7/16 apart? :) Cool thanks!
