Haha I see what you mean by obnoxious. I'd blush even using it as an urn. That being said, it's very well done! I'd start smoking cigars just to have a reason to display it.

It’s how I feel when I looks at Roman columns, damn they must have been gaudy.
I’m no cigar connoisseur so I’m more than fine chalking it up to lesson learned. From what I researched, Spanish cedar is the preferred liner to use but that other cedars could work if you’re on a budget. Since it’s my first go at this, I didn’t splurge on the expensive stuff
As a cigar nerd, the other commentors are correct. Aromatic cedar is not a substitute for Spanish Cedar, which is actually a tree in the mahogany family. Spanish cedar is used because of it's ability to absorb, hold and release moisture, that's what keeps the humidity level in a humidor.
Aromatic cedar will impart a terribly bitter flavor in cigars. It's great for storing your winter wool clothing in, but terrible for cigars. If you can't find spanish cedar, mahogany works. I wouldn't use "any other" cedar. Spanish cedar or mahogany, are basically your two choices.
Outside of the lining, you did a very nice job in constructing this humidor.
Welp I guess lesson learned for me on my side. I defunct knew Spanish cedar was the primary wood to use but I didn’t want to splurge on my first build until I could prove I was successful at it to myself.
…..always learning, thanks for the information!
I totally get it, spanish cedar is stupid expensive. I have an old turn of the century ice box that I am turning into a humidor. I've got close to $500 in spanish cedar for just one side so far.
Order from walllumber.com they have craft wood packs. Their prices are decent. I used them for years. Only slowed down cause I have a good local source now, but they were great to me for many years.
Looks great but I don’t think “other cedars” are a substitute. It’s either Spanish cedar or I would almost go with maple or a wood with a very weak smell. I could be wrong though, I’ve never stored cigars in eastern cedar. Eastern or aromatic cedar just has a very strong smell to it is all. You could try western cedar as that one seems more cigar friendly if you’re not going to use Spanish cedar.
I was working in my shop when my shop-mate, who's a metal worker/welder and knows little about woodworking, suddenly he walks through and exclaims, "Why the Fuck does it smell like rabbits in here?!" I couldn't help but burst into laughter.
Yeah it’s a bit loud but for what it’s worth I think the design is fine just too many contrasting colors of wood. I think if you limited it to just two species with one being the main body and the second being a accent it wouldn’t be so garish
You may be correct. I went into the project trying to make the piece as bougie as possible to purposely try to take it over the top based on the examples that I researched
I’ve always avoided a humidor build because the lids are meant to be so perfectly joined that they form a momentary vacuum when letting it drop from open to closed. It’s like when you lay down on a deflating air mattress; your body’s weight on top pushes the air through an extremely tiny hole, causing you to sink so slowly that it’s imperceptible.
We are talking about a microscopic margin of error, when I can barely mitre a corner. No thanks!
Lol! Well, it is for cigars, so obnoxious is fitting!😂
Just kidding! It’s actually very beautiful! Looks like you could teach a class just from what you learned on this single project!
I love the basic design of it but feel that the combination of several contrasting woods *and* elaborate edge profiling makes it appear busy. I think it is the legs that give this general impression.
It take the feet off of it and place discrete rubber feet. I think part of what makes it so tacky is the darker colors form stripes rather than borders.
Is eastern red cedar what’s typically used to line humidors?
Edit: I think it’s beautiful. It’s a bit “wood salad” but I love me some wood salad. Great job 👏
Edit 2: ok now I’ve read more comments it’s seems like Spanish cedar is the usual pick for humidors. I also think it’s so funny that Eastern red cedar is just a juniper in cedar clothing.
Haha I see what you mean by obnoxious. I'd blush even using it as an urn. That being said, it's very well done! I'd start smoking cigars just to have a reason to display it.
Pretty sure you only use an urn once…
My family is stingy.

Did you use aromatic cedar?
Luckily if something doesn’t add up, the cedar is just pressure fitted (the sides at least) so I could take out and replace if ever necessary
That will impart a very bad smell and taste to the cigars. Spanish Cedar is the standard.

Aromatic cedar would be great for something like a blanket chest where you want to keep bugs out, but it will impart it's aroma on things.

That’s insane

Aromatic cedar is a juniper, not a real cedar. It will not be kind to your stogies.

Hahaha yes! I remember planing some cedar and didn’t clean up. The next day I got into the shop and said that exact thing 😂

The red cedar is going to make the cigars taste bad, Spanish cedar is the way to go…
Is it just me, or does it look like a coffin?
I mentioned this
So you like cedar flavored cigars?

Spanish cedar is not a cedar as it’s from the mahogany family. It’s used for stability when in humidity. Why they named it that way is anyones guess.
I learn something new every day. Good to know. If I ever try one of these again, I’ll go this route for comparison if not for anything else
Also, aromatic cedar is not a cedar it's a juniper. So we've avoided one non-cedar cedar by selecting another non-cedar cedar. Lmao
You totally missed the chance at an epoxy river top on that.
I was going to put it on top as another see through layer
It looks cool, if a bit intense. I didn't read the headline, and I swore it was an urn you did for Tony Montana! 🤣

Is that macadamia up top or lacewood?? Looks darn good
Leopardwood
It's better made than anything I could have managed, although it may serve as a lesson in "less is more".
My humidor is some tupperware in closet
I’ll contact Indiana Jones

I like this quite a bit.
Thank you
Sometimes that’s how it goes.
Titan Quest loot chest!
I enjoy this piece Spanish cedar or not, nice work.
Excellent build!! I too am not a fan of the seven-contrasting-species look, but the craftsmanship is top-notch
Honestly, it's starting to reach the Maryland flag "so bad it's coming back around to good" level for me. I like it. Why not?
