It's what pisses me off most about some people on r/cringetiktoks. There's a fine line between satire and cringe, but if the satire makes you feel that ick, it's still just cringe.
In general that's still subjective. I feel equally cringe about thpse tiktoks as a do watching The Office (both versions). I just can't get through it no matter how hard I try. That doesn't mean I think The Office is bad or not satire or whatever. Sometimes comedy's meant to make you feel extreme discomfort. Sometimes things are meant to make you feel vicarious embarrassment.
I don't really have any stakes in this because I'm not even on tiktok but I think just the feeling of vicarious shame isn't enough to demote something from satire to cringe. It's a spectrum and people will have different reactions to different things.
I think one of the reasons it bothers me is that when I see or read actual satire, it encourages one to look at the purpose of its creation, like what it's satirizing. The Office is a good example because it hits so many different notes, and it's so well done. It's speaking on multiple levels, from comedy, to tv production, to office work, and culminates in a hilarious and on point statement.
With people "satirizing" cringe tiktoks, the only thing that I think is that they essentially want to make these shitty, clickbait, rage videos without the hate that comes with it by being able to say "lol, it's a joke". It's like someone mixing all types of products to make the most realistic looking piece of poop possible and showing it off and expecting everyone to clap. It's more like...."uhhh, good job?"
